The 'quit smoking' thread

I went the patches. Logic being I would divide the problem in two.
Psychological addiction and physical addiction.

Once I'd dealt with the psychological (on patches) I tackled the physical.
The whole experience is like building mental defenses for a castle under seige.

On the plus side you learn fuckloads about your own mind and assemble some pretty awesome mental tricks that you can use in other situations.

^ I just went cold turkey & currently I'm able to socially smoke, as if I were addicted, about once a week!

Some of my friends probably don't believe I've pretty much quit! ;)

Will power is all it takes.. and it actually doesn't take much at all. I was amazed at how easy it was... all you need to do is puff yourself up with pride on what great endurance you have, and don't feed into anything that suggests the adverse.

If you stuff up, excuse and forgive yourself, but still continue to believe that you're in control.

YOU'RE IN CONTROL, NOT THE ADDICTION! If you can control your mind, the cravings will be a lot easier to fight. You'll notice them, but they won't bother you too much :).

This comes from someone who smoked 15-20 12mg's per day, or 3 packs on weekends!

^ Yes, pride is your friend

I smoked for 12yrs or so, packet a day. I'd wake up in the middle of the night, smoke, go back to sleep. Very addicted. So heres some tips.

My rule: When quitting I can do whatever the fuck i like except put a smoke in my mouth and light it. Keep it simple. I can say fuckit im not going to work, i can get shitfaced in the middle of the week, i can order takeaway, i can bootycall that girl I know I shouldnt, shirk responsibility, get creatively decadent ... willpower is only to be spent on not lighting a smoke.

Mentally: I quit because i choose to - end of story. There are no reasons as logic is weak and can be argued against. Believe me, you will sit there and hammer your own defense trying to justify lighting a smoke. Without a reason there is nothing to pry against.

Defenses: When my own mind (The junky voice) says: "have a smoke" that is not me, its my adversary, the quicker i build an automatic "NO" reply the easier things will get ... do NOT negotiate, thats a trap, dont even go there. That automatic reply is your savior, hone it to a razors edge - fast, sharp and immediate.

Other stuff that I did: BREATHE and relax - cravings will hit you for around 3 minutes then pass, eat mints, listerine strips, nuts, toothpicks. I would pop a mint, go outside and chew a toothpick for 3 minutes and imagine as hard as I could that it was a smoke, thats fine, as long as it isnt one. I also gave myself reminders and rewards daily

Ive heard 'quit buddies' work - but mine fucking piked after a week. I just used it as fuel - 'Im better than you' (Being 'decadent quitting maddog' im allowed to think whatever i feel like).

It was a lot of work, but in a sick kind of way i actually really enjoyed the experience. Amazing dreams, insanely creative, really feeling alive and in the moment.

Good luck :D

thanks heaps for the advice :)
that was really really helpful.
even though that simple "no" in your head can sometimes be strong, i always end up justifying to myself that i should just have one.
im actually excited to be giving up smoking in a weird sort of way, i cant wait to fill out a form in 6 months and tick "non-smoker".
but im also sad that im sort of losing a part of myself, a part of who i am.
you make it sound so easy, just saying you can do anything except smoke. ive never thought of it like that.
xox

doppelganger - ive tried being a "social" smoker, it just doesnt work for me, i need to quit full time, but if you can do it, more power to ya girl!

That's how I came to quitting - without a good reason!

I got a sore throat and decided that it was a good day to quit. I had absolutely no desire to do-so prior, in fact, I always spoke of how much I enjoyed smoking! Of course my sore throat cleared, but I was 3 days successful by then :D.

For me, facing that I couldn't follow through, would be so much harder than fighting off a little craving!

(Kryal) ^ If you get to the 'ticking the box' 6 month mark I'll buy you a cocktail of your choosing :)

well after absolutely waking up and feeling like shit after smoking half a pack (plus some) ive decided to give up now.
day one today, im not waiting until i get my hypnosis, im getting a head start.

Good Luck KKE, i hope you do it. I quit for 4 days a couple of years ago, but then my best friend and i went out for apple martinis, i got drunk and felt like a ciggie. Bestie says to me in a drunken slur "oh, just take the patch off, have a ciggie and put it back on" LMAO, so i did. The rest is history *puff puff* ;)

awesome - day 2!!!
ive got a totally different mindset this time, to the last few times when ive given up which i think is a good thing, oh and im really getting into that ALLEN CARR book, its really good, changes the way you view yourself as a smoker.

last night we played basketball and as usual the girls went out for their post game cigarette and a chat, and i just chatted...woo0hoo0.

Ive been clean now for about 3 months with some help from my nicabate gum and a few sneaky puffs here and there.

I say go the gum it tastes like shit but so do ciggies really

Smoking, drinking and taking drugs is absolutely something only degenerate losers/European prostitutes do. And while it should be noted that European prostitutes can be pretty pricey, this does not in any way excuse your negative behavioral patterns.

Don't you people have any fucking respect for your bodies? The body is the chief inlet of the soul in this age, and here you are polluting it with toxins!

Filth, filth, filth.

I'm so disgusted I can't even control my bowel movements any more.

Ive been trying to find out about this Allen Carr book. Cant d/l it on Limewire (got a virus). Tried searching for reviews and found some from people who sound like they work company that sells the the book.

If this guy Allen Carr wants to help people quit so much and his method is so successfull why dont they just make the technique freely available ?

eh , might have to stop being a tight arse and just buy the book...

I used to smoke a lot of weed and once i quit that the ammount of ciggies i smoked skyrocketed. Doesnt help being outdoors all day either.

Its a weird habit. On the one hand you realise its a filthy , pointless , expensive and damaging habit. On the other it would be like losing a part of your life to quit. I can go a fair while without really having any physical need for one but the mental addiction always gets me in again.
