No we see the dr every few months and our gps deal with our care the rest of the time. I've had 6 different specialists and I've never been treated by a nurse always a dr. The only downside to this is the huge waiting lists.

I think I'm in a fairly unique position. My PC Dr does all of my pain management ...it's one of his greatest passions helping people in genuine pain get the relief they need.
From what I have heard and read, most people are referred to a pain specialist.
I've never had a nurse or nurse practitioner involved in any way. However, my child takes Concerta and one time her MD was out of town so the N.P. wrote her rx for her. The only way this is relevant is the fact that concerta is a c2...so I guess it may vary from state to state and country to country?
I'm not quite with it today ; forgive me is this sounds like nonsense:(

The controlled substances act is effective in all 50 states, a CII in FL = a CII in CA.

Just thought I'd post cuz I'm experiencing a horrible flare and I havent posted in a while. My trigger finger is itching to retaliate with the big guns. Watch the battle play out in my mind.

Tri, do you know if rules regarding NP's writing rx's are the same in all states?? Purely out of curiosity. Do they need to get approval from an MD, or are their prescribing practices completely independent? <3

I've been to a couple of pain management clinics...once I saw a doc who did absolutely nothing for me.....this last time, i saw a nlp and he is actually helping....we think i have CRPS, and will be starting to look in that direction for answers.
We don't have to see a np, but as doomed said, if we insist on a doc, it will be a longer wait.

And as Cat pointed out, the3 laws are different in each state...I see my rheumotoligst in one state, and live in another, and sometimes the pharmacies give her a lot of guff.

I am so glad on my last appointment my doctor said nothing about my boarder line positive on my previous appointment; she just gave me another test which I passed. That is a huge weight off my chest.

Lately I have been walking and riding my bike almost every day. For the most part it has been helping my joints although some days I over worked my self which made me real soar the next day. It feels good to do something besides sit in front of my computer all day.

phenethylo j, I'm really glad things worked out for you your doctor's office. Also glad to hear that you are doing more physical activity.
I get really depressed sometimes and spend a lot of my time in bed or on the sofa isolating during those times. I notice that in addition to my regular pain, I have a lot of lower back pain just from lack of movement.
Doomed, what's going on with you Darling? The most recent info I remember was you received some meds (although nothing that has been doing lots of good) to hold you over til your paper work went through properly. Then you were supposed to start a trial run of a new opiate ...Am I right so far lol? Just woke up and it was strange, I immediately wondered how you were and what was new in your never ending quest for relief that you deserve :( (BIG run-on sentence, wow.)
I gather from your comment about the diazepam that you are going through a tough time emotionally. How are you doing in that arena compared to the last time we spoke privately?
I hope everyone is doing as well as possible today. It's 8:30 in the morning where I am and it's very cold, but the sun is out so that's good :)
I will go ahead and vent about this just to get it off my chest. This is 1 of the things I love about this place. I am comfortable sharing so many things with you all that I am NOT comfortable sharing with many people in my physical world.
OK...I woke up in the middle of the night in fentanyl wd's (probably a 5 on a scale of 1-10) and physical pain was at about a 7, conservatively. I immediately took a pretty high dose of my BT med and laid back down waiting for it to kick in. It did not. After pacing around and trying to go back to sleep for a couple of hours, I gave in and put on a new patch. I put it on about 3a.m. and have had 2 more rounds of BT's since, and I am starting to feel better in both areas.
The patch I applied was my last one. I cannot get more till the 5'th, so instead of changing every 2 days as directed I have been stretching it out
quite a bit... last time I changed it before last night was the 25th (that sounds really bad considering today is the first but remember there were only 28 days in February), and the time before that was the 21'st.
I'm concerned b/c the wd's have been arriving earlier and earlier (maybe due to the somewhat steady slowing down?) and I'm not sure what kind of shape I will be in come the fifth.
Can anybody tell me, is what I have been doing the equivalent of quickly lowering the dose of the drug?
By the way, the reason I ran out early is due to the usual adhesion issues:(
Just Wanted to share with people who understand and I appreciate anyone who took the time to read this rambling.

Hello everyone. How is everyone feeling today? I'm doing ok, but I've noticed something weird the last two days--it seems the Gabapentin might be making me nauseous. It passes pretty quickly, but it's a new thing and I'm not sure what else it could be other than the Gabapentin. Anyone have any experience with Gabapentin causing nausea?

I have not posted much lately--my 16 week old puppy contracted Parvo last week, so my husband and I (and the pup) have been through hell the last week. She is better now. Just came home after three days in a 24 hour facility. Poor little girl.

I have my appointment with my new pain specialist Thursday. I've been trying to manage my pain without taking more than the prescribed amount of Percocet, but it's not easy considering the tolerance I've developed. I'm looking forward to my appointment. I've been doing some research on various medications and will discuss all of that with the pain clinic. BTW--someone asked about being seen by and NP vs. an MD. At this upcoming appointment with the pain specialists, I will initially be seen by an NP. They say that my regular doctor will continue to prescribe medications.

It is a cold, sunny day here. I'm going home early to be with my puppy. Take care everyone!

at my pain management practice, i only see the MD every third visit. the other two times i see the NP. which is fine by me, we have a great rapport. not that i don't with the MD, but she's the only medical professional i come into contact with that i have a really great relationship with and it's a really welcome change from my moron of a PCP and the nitwit sleep doctor i am dealing with.

Good Day to Everyone :)
Just checking in to see how my fellow CPP's are holding up today? Don't have much to say at the moment... wanted to say hello and see how you all are.

Hello all. I had my appointment with the pain specialist today. She put me on MS Contin (15 mg every 8 hours) and wants me to switch from Gabapentin to Topamax. She let me keep the percocet prescription for BT pain but wants me to avoid taking it if I can so we can see how the MS Contin and Topamax work for me. Anyone have any experience with Topamax.

I think I like this doctor. She gave me some good suggestions about managing my pain and said that she was pleased that I am trying things other than just medication to control the pain and make it more manageable. She also liked the additions I made to the little pain chart guy I had to complete (you know that one where there is an outline of a human and they have you shade in where your pain is). I added a face and hair and earrings to mine. She said she'd never had anyone do that in all her years of practicing medicine. :) All in all a really good appointment. I have a follow up in three weeks and I'm really hoping that the two meds will work well.

She told me that one of the side effects of Topamax is weight loss. I thought that was interesting. I could use all the help I can get!

Hope everyone is hanging in there and managing their pain today.

Well I finally got the methadone and it hasn't done fuck all, the oxy worked better, I think my dr has me on the wrong dose... I've waited months for this and it is just one more disappointment to add to the list. Pain is at a 9, hope everyone else is doing better than me

Doomed~
I'm SO VERY sorry to hear about the disappointing ( to say the least) results you got from methadone. I know how long you've been waiting for this switch and hoping that it would work. As severe as your pain is daily, I can only imagine how you feel.
I remember when I went through a period of time when my breakthrough medicine ( ironically, oxycodone) was not lasting as long as it was supposed to, nor was it working as well. I switched to oxymorphone, and it was even less helpful. I had such high hopes for that medication I was so disappointed. I gave it a month, and I was really feeling worse than before the switch.
My Dr switched me back to oxycodone IR again, and luckily it worked just as well as when I first started taking it. The only thing we could figure was that maybe taking the month long break from it helped. Dr Said that lots of people rotate their medications but that he was not willing to do that type of thing on a regular or planned basis.
I sort of have an idea of how hard it is for you to switch things around, considering how long it took for this to come through.
Do you have any idea of what steps to take next?
Keep in mind that I have never taken methadone before... But I've heard that it takes awhile to get in and out of your system. Do you think that maybe more time will tell? Or are you pretty sure this isn't that medication for you? If you think maybe it's the wrong dose, how difficult is it to have that adjusted where you live?

QueenBee, It sounds like you are off to a good start with your new specialist. Let us know how you do on your new medications :)

I hope everybody else is doing well today.

It's the most powerful quote I've ever encountered.

I really like the Serenity Prayer too but I'm not at all religious so the whole "God grant me..." aspect is just kinda ritualistic.

I repeat both sayings over and over again every single day (And NO, I'm not a fucking AA/NA cult leader)

I like the serenity prayer too. I've always thought it should say something like," ....accept the things I cannot (and should not) change, the courage to change the things I can (and should)...".
Not everything that can be changed ought to be and vice versa. I guess most people are smart enough to figure that out though lol.
