why i think it's ok to "allow" your pet dog/cat/ferret to get stoned:
personally, i think marijuana should be legalized. the reason i think this, is because from what information that i've gathered i believe that consuming marijuana doesn't pose any major health risks if done in moderation. secondly, i also think that what an individual does with his/her own body is his/her own business, and that individuals have the right to self-medicate themselves, and to partake in recreational drug use as long as they act responsibly. i also don't believe that there is anything wrong with being in an altered state of mind that deviates from the baseline experience accepted by society.
that said, if you apply the same logic to animals, what gives us the right to deny animals the same pleasures that humans partake in? if you smoke pot because you have accessed the risk for yourself, and you don't see it as significantly detrimental to your health, allowing your pet to recieve a contact high from pot smoke shouldn't be of much concern either.
i'm not saying people should throw their pets into a pillow case and blow smoke into it. and i'm not saying that all pets enjoy getting high, but if your pet appears to be attracted to marijuana smoke, then just let it be. i see so many people applying the same erroneous rhetoric that drug-prohibitionists use. it's the same groundless moral indignation, except it's even worse because of the hypocrisy involved.
if you smoke pot, and think pot should be legal, why the fuck are you making such a big deal out of animals getting stoned? i mean, if pot is that horrible, WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CONSUMING IT right? cat's aren't stupid, they have survival instincts just like humans do. if they enjoy a certain sensation, and aren't physically harmed from it, then they will want to try to re-experience that sensation. if they get stoned, get paranoid and freak out, they'll probably stay away from the scent of marijuana in the future. either way they're not at risk of any kind of serious bodily harm.
lastly, i think the biggest negative side-effect of pot is that it causes people to be too passive, and overly-content. people start losing motivation and start neglecting other areas of their life. cats & dogs and most house-hold pets on the other hand, do not have this problem. ALL THEY DO IS EAT, SLEEP, AND SHIT ALL DAY. they don't have social commitments to keep up with, they don't have occupational responsibilities. their grades aren't gonna drop. they're not going to lose their job. they won't get into trouble with the law.
pot is a social drug, if some pot heads enjoy getting stoned with their pets, so be it. it'll probably just build a stronger emotional bond between the pet and the owner. one that is less authoritative or characterized by dominance and submissiveness, and more mutually appreciative.
well, that's my spiel. and now i have to give my pet iguana his nightly heroin injection...
