the official 2008-09 NCAA football thread!

It's a sad day for the Pac-10...Mike Stoops'-led Arizona looks like the 2nd best team in the conference, with Oregon State being right up there too. :(

Granted, the drop-off from 2nd to 8th isn't that much...but yeah...it'll be funny when 'Zona tanks it again next year when all the seniors leave.

Every year I wait for Cal to step up and be the team... but then i read how they have trouble even cutting down trees so their athletics program can grow.

..big problems up there, no will to compete. ;)

maybe they can make the raiders an honorary NCAA team.

Roll Tide!!

First half warriors, second half wimps. I am amazed we have made it this far without a loss. Thought for sure Georgia was going to drag our ass up and down the field. Saban is doing a great job with our team. And it is only his 2nd year. Cool stuff.

Not just the Tebow-Harvin show at UF these days, here's a recent article on our running backs:

link

Over the past two games, Demps and Rainey have combined to rush for 401 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 10.5 yards a carry. Demps' four touchdown runs have been for an average of 47 yards. He had a 42-yard TD run against LSU. The week before, he had TD bursts of 30 and 48 yards against Arkansas. Rainey had a 75-yard touchdown run against the Razorbacks.

For the season, Demps is averaging 13.3 yards a carry, while Rainey is gaining 6.8 yards per rush.
...

"They give you the opportunity to have some short three- and four-yard runs that in the future you're going to get that 50-yard breakout run," quarterback Tim Tebow said. "You can keep calling it and going to the inside zone plays because there's an opportunity for big plays now."

So, THAT is the logic for offensive play calls of run-up-the middle-for-no-gain earlier in the season? We thought if these two guys can do it, then Tebow and Moody and Moore could as well? Sorry, I'm still fuming over our offensive play selection that consists of shoving Tebow (or whatever token running back we've put in) up to the line and inserting his head in the center's ass for another wasted down.

Despite their lack of size (Demps is 5-foot-8, 176 pounds; Rainey is 5-9, 178), both broke long scoring runs between the tackles against Arkansas. In the LSU game, Demps' 42-yard TD came after taking the pitch on the option play. So, Demps and Rainey are a threat inside and out.

It's a big-play dimension that had been missing at tailback in Meyer's first three seasons.
...
"When you think about explosive plays and yards per carry from the last two games, it's about as good as it gets. It's because guys are taking short ones and going the distance."

It's pretty much been a two-game thing, but Tebow said Demps and Rainey have been hitting home runs dating all the way back to two-a-days in August.

"You could tell in some of our scrimmages," Tebow said. "They just made people miss when they really shouldn't and they'd take it to the end zone. You could see how special those guys are.

Missing in his first 3 seasons, eh? Deeerrrrrrrrr 8) Explosive plays and YPC are related to guys taking short ones and going the distance, eh? Friggin genius! Now I'm certain our offensive coordinator knows what he's doing. 8( You could tell from two-a-days going back to August that these guys were the shit, eh? Now either the 1st and 2nd string running backs are God's gift to the Orange & Blue, or our coaches couldn't tell what talent they had in these 'backup underclassmen' :| Considering the other guys didn't run for much, I'm inclined to strongly believe our staff has gotten lucky in that they can't assess skill, can't coach (okay, small credit for changing the O-line splits), and had their 'offensive' asses saved by kids that are too small and fast to be seen by big D-linemen :\

.../end rant

At least we're winning...I could be bitching about losing :\ Still, I ain't happy winning....not when we're doing it wrong. Or maybe I just need a moment to bitch.

.../really, end rant

Columbus is awaiting the Penn State/OSU game. I would take the Nittany Lions easily, but two factors deter me:

1) from the teams they beat, their combined win percentage is something like 22-35.

2) it's a night game, at Columbus, and PSU hasn't won here in something like 30 years.

regardless, they look good. they have a great safety and great QB play. they just really haven't played anyone yet, and its weird to say that about another team because that is what usually dogs Ohio State.

anyways, I will be ready to get into ton of fights tomorrow night. Penn State fans are the absolute worst. protect your homes and your kegs Buckeye fans.

i haven't read any articles or blogs today about last nights whomping of auburn from w. virginia.

my question is this: is the auburn QB 1) hurt, 2) scared to throw the football, or 3) going for a record of least passes in an entire game? WTFF? the guy duffed an 8 yd pass on 3rd and goal, which brought in the kicking team for the FG. i got bored watching early in the 2nd half, but i seriously never saw the guy throw more than 5 passes, and none of them had to have been over 15 yds....

It's BS that USC jumped UGA in the polls when UGA was on a bye week. UGA would have never jumped USC without USC losing. Oh did I mention, UGA's loss is to #2 Alabama, while USC lost to shitty Oregon State.

My LSU Tigers are ready to thump those Georgia Leghumpers....

My prediction.....

Its all up to LSU's D for this game, LSU QB Lee will make a few freshman mistakes....but i think LSU can still overcome those if the D plays like it did against USC in the 2nd half.....AGGRESSIVE.....If we have a USC first half showing, or even worse a UF showing.....It'll be a blowout for UGA.....With good D play from LSU its a close game and will go either way....

Both teams have underachieved, even in their wins.....We'll see which one keeps themselves in the SEC race

I've got the tigers picked to win by 10, sadly. "The Express" that debuted against South Carolina should be effective against a weak O line. Stafford can take the hits without panicking, but its going to force him into quick three step drops, and our RBs and WRs are used to having more time than that.

I expect interceptions (in fact, 10 points my be optimistic), and more than a few 3 and outs.

But if we win... hot damn! It will be a real confirmation that our skill positions have stepped up and can make adjustments given changing situations between games. Truly, this is a "may the best team win" game for me. If we win, I demand to be back in the NC consideration, and I expect to beat florida. If we lose... hey, we're still bowl eligible. ;)

As for your offense... its not going to be pretty. I will be excited to see UGA's defense go to work.

I'm picking UGA ton win this one, despite the game being held at the swamp. Georgia's QB looks much improved the last couple of games and that is where LSU looks the most average. if they can control the emotion on the field then they can win.

Defense played poorly but more importantly our Fresh QB threw 3 INT's with 2 going for TD's

Running game was great but we were in a hole from the beginning and playing catch up the whole way

^^^

Yea Stafford was the man....Our blitzes didnt rattle him one but....

But if we had Ryan Perilloux I believe the results wou;dve been different

Dawgs kicked ass today and hung 50+ on LSU. But I thought LSU was overrated anyway. I mean, they almost lost to Auburn, which is playing really bad football. Axl, it's Death Valley, not the Swamp. I will be one happy dawg if we win next week, but I'm not counting on it. Tebow will probably tear our horrible pass defense apart. That "bend but don't break" D Coach Willie Martinez has in place ain't working. And don't get me started on our OL, but they are young pups and considering how many injuries and replacements there have been, they are managing fairly well, at least today. I predict a loss next week....and Tuesday.
GO DAWGS!!!
FOCUS FLORIDA!

I hate you all.....I'm jonesing all freaking week to talk things up in this thread, but abstain so I'm not running chatterbox on my lonesome....then everybody jumps in after I'm gone Friday afternoon :!

Oi, somebody drag RC in here to review how UK's defensive stats are looking these days =D

Props to UGA....and a kick to the shins on LSwho? I wasn't quite sure who I wanted to win that one. I mean, if we beat both, it doesn't matter much, but I did rather have UGA win for the fact that a LSU loss means they won't be in the SECCG and I'll be honest, while I am confident we could beat them again, I'm not certain we could beat them in a rematch (assuming we beat UGA and make the SECCG).

I'll wait a few more days before talking up the UGA-UF game next weekend.

Watching PSU-OSU is like having your eyes stapled open to watch paint dry. The color is vivid (damn I lurve my HDTV) but 3-6? C'mon 8) And don't try to spin this as a 'Big10+1 defensive battle' when PSU comes in having monstrous offensive stats for the season. Still, I won't beat that box much, since I acknowledge this is THE big game for the season in the Big10+1, and I still like Tressel for game preparation (at least, if it is *in conference* ;) ). Plus, PSU might be a little nervous, given this is their first real 'playoff game', whereas OSU already has a loss so it feels like they've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

ALA-TN? Barf. :| I got excited when TN returned a 'fumble' to make it 16-9....but the runner was down (I agree), and it's getting ugly at 22-3 with lotsa time remaining. ALA isn't doing itself any favors with this showing, and while those involved will claim it's a 'rivalry' so that throws shit outta whack....it's no bigger than PSU-OSU, but one of the teams has consistently shown it sucks ass. *sigh* I don't even know why I keep flipping back to it other than my *need* for colllege football.

**WOW** Just had a vision....watching the PSU-OSU matchup in HD is like watching the old vibrating electric football games where all the players shuffle to the same low spot on the board and the only scoring occurs when someone either tilts the table or something goes freaky wrong and the one guy with the ball breaks free....but I'm on acid, and the colors are vivid :)

thats a cleaver metaphor for the big ten as a whole @ present ;) well done reedly.

brutal game judging by the score... im greatful that i missed it in

The difference in the LSU - UGA game were the 3 INT's by our Fresh QB......2 for TD's......The game was won by 14 points....Im not saying UGA wouldnt have won anyway....but it would've but much closer....

Our RB Charles Scott had a monster game(HAd similar stats as Moreno).....And had we not had to play cacth up all game....I think he would've outgained Moreno.....However I think Moreno is still the best back in the SEC.....He has phenomenal balance....HE always seems to get a few extra yards after he gets hit.....Reminds me of Jamaal Anderson (smaller and quicker version) for the Falcons in their SB year....

IF LSU can get a mistake free game from our QB we will BEAT Alabama.....Mark my words....We could drop the rest of the games for the season.....as long as Saban doesnt come away in his debut game in Baton Rouge with a W
