the official 08-09 NFL thread

looks like the rules are coalescing. ok, i propose that we:

1. start things anew on week 3 so we start with a level playing field.
2. we're picking outright winner in each game
3. to be included, you have to make picks for every game in that week.

let's go!

sounds like a great way to invigorate my favorite forum, by far, on BL.

however, like Rusty Cage I have been without power for the past week. a level one hurricane actually hit Central Ohio and it has left most of the city of Columbus without power. I have been taking looks around at a coffee shop. should be up and running by Friday.

I don't want to make a war out of this, but a lack of point spreads renders a HUGE percentage of the games utterly meaningless for purposes of this competition.

Who the fuck is EVER going to take a double-digit underdog to win a game outright?

ANSWER:

Someone who will almost definitely NOT win this pool.

i'm going to see the 49ers game on sunday. i'll have to leave my raiders cap at home and buy a bottle of chardonnay for the tailgate party :)

i'm using the spread to pick 3 or 4 games i'm fairly certain will hit

Atl -6
Car +3 1/2
Ten - 4 1/2
Ari +3

Looks like I'll be the only one to pick the dolphins over the pats. The pats really look awful without Tom Brady. I don't think they make the playoffs. I pick the Bills to win the AFC east, and the dolphins to go anywhere between 6-10 and 9-7, but they definitely won't make the playoffs. I will still pick them for every game of the season, cause that's my team.

thats a zero risk pick. if they lose they were supposed to. if they win (and win big somehow, wow) you look like a genius.

when i left the bar the bills were losing and the bears were winning. by the time i got home t'was the opposite... strange days

Oh wow, I can't believe the dolphins destroyed new england today, what a upset.

New england hasn't lost by or had that much points against them in a single game for over ten years, that was amazing.

And the bears game wtf can I say about that, Tampa & Chicago are my two favorite teams, I'm not mad that one beat the other but sure was a exciting ass game when they took it into overtime.

When you think about it like that every pick has no risk. I mean, we're not betting money here. You can use the same logic with a game like NO and DEN. I thought it would be the hardest to call based on the fact that they were evenly matched, and it turned out to be a very close game. If I picked NO I could very well say that it could have gone either way, and therefore I was almost right, and it was a low risk pick. The fact of the matter is no matter what the reason for calling it, a call is a call and you are responsible for whatever wins or losses you get. In the NFL, the overall risk of the pick you make depends on how much you are betting on it.

Sittin on 8-6 looking to be 9-6 will probably be sittin at about a 60% correct pick'em score :(

i'll add up all the scores and publish the table after the game tomorrow night.

the longer the pats went without a loss the bigger that loss was going to seem. yes it's a big loss. yes it was the dolphins but it's only remarkable because of what went before.

looks like i picked the right week to go to candlestick - the san francisco game was awesome!
