Megathread The OFFICAL Anime Appreciation Megathread! vers Moshi Moshi

I tend to find 99 percent of anime intolerable, but my obsession with Japanese culture and the aesthetic fascination I have with what I do like has driven me to try out quite a bit over 15 years or so. You sound like you've seen a fair amount of series and I've watched mostly features, so I don't know if the following will be redundant for you, but I've tried to include the not yet mentioned titles that are also not the obvious ones vetted for Western audiences (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Animatrix, anything Miyazaki, etc.). Pretty much all of these were watched stoned or greater, and I sincerely feel more comfortable recommending anime on the condition that the watcher is blazed.

Memories
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki
the last two episodes of Outlaw Star (if you're stoned enough I think it's "whoa" enough to stand alone)
the last episode of Trigun
Iria: Zeiram the Animation (first anime ever seen -- on scifi channel -- so it may just be nostalgia)
Rojin Z
Venus Wars (this is probably the iffiest recommendation)
Fist of the North Star (pulpy)
Golgo 13 (even pulpier!)
Vampire Hunter D
Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer (worth finding if you can)
Reign: The Conqueror
Aeon Flux
FLCL (other Gainax stuff may be worth checking into as well)
Hellsing Ultimate
Legend of the Overfiend (all installments, but mostly the first) (I think it works as psychological horror or anthropological art and not just freakout porn fare/comedy, then again I was a college freshman on DXM when I was traumatized by it and it seemed like the animation cells were painted with the brains of an Otaku rapist)
Afro Samurai 1 and 2 (though not Japanese, it's still the style and amusing enough to include)

Of the lesser known mentioned already I second Serial Experiments Lain

p.s. I heard that the last two installments of Rebuild of Evangelion are going to divert from the original storyline, with a totally new character being fleshed out in the third (due out this fall I think).

Here's a list of what's currently on my external. I pruned it not long ago as I needed space for some other stuff. It used to have a lot more. Also some of this stuff I haven't watched yet, so it might not all be good. Most of it is though :)

Eww :|
Edit: Ala doesn't know shit about real anime. Only what she sees on TV.
3 things.
1) Hentai is not anime.
2) Alasdairm is male
3) Cowboy Bebop is a masterpiece
:p

Yeah it deviates a bit. I'm waiting till they finish the tetrology before I start watching them, although I do have the first 2 already :)

Rebuild blows the underfunded original series out of the water in all ways. Not only has the plot deviated but the nature of the characters has too (for the better by far). I've gushed about it before but the artwork is so detailed and epic that it's really worth the wait between the films (but not for them all to finish before watching WTF man!)

Anyway,

Hello BL! I am an avid fan of Japanese animation but right now I don't know what to watch. I just finished watching the first Evangelion remix movie, it's pretty good but since I watched the TV series, it's redundant since it's the same story. I am looking for something like Wolf's Rain or Code Geass, .Hack, Death Note, El Cazador de la Bruja, Madlax, NOIR, Amatsuki, Tsubasa Chronicles, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Pandora Hearts, Xenosaga: The Animation, Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, Elfen Lied, Naruto Shippuden... I watched all Bleach episodes pass 300 but really got bored of fillers. I am looking for something deep, spiritual, funny SCI-FI or fantasy... something along the lines of the titles I just named. Any suggestions? If you don't know about Japanese animation or think it's childish, seriously, watch Wolf's Rain, Code Geass or Elfen Lied... and Death Note! You can get the Fansubs easily on the Internet... it's really worth it!

Cowboy Bebop, Darker Than Black and the Ghost in The Shell (GiTS) movies and series should keep you busy for a while. The first two are noir style sci-fi with deeply compelling characters (hence their popularity) and GiTS requires a lot of attention to follow but is a wicked cyberpunk journey into a very plausible near-future world where a lot of philosophical arguments are unearthed and hashed out over plots involving domestic terrorism and what it means to be an android. GiTS takes some dedication and focus to watch but for shorter variations on the theme there's Appleseed (supposedly set in the GiTS universe) and Armitage The Third which was oddly done in English.

For fantasy ish I'd recommend checking out the Kara no Kyoukai series of short/long films which gets into some pretty dark territory psychologically à la Elfen Lied but with more mindfuck and less gore. If you really liked Code Geass then there are two good series that aired within the past few seasons that are similar in a boy-who-must-become-king kinda way; C: The Possibility of Money and Control and Guilty Crown. Both have tragic romance arcs like Code Geass and wicked art, so they're worth checking out. Another epic fantasy series is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's pretty much 60 episodes of crazy shounen violence with so much plot and action packed into each that there's really no filler in all of it.

And for some funny stuff check out Detroit Metal City. There are a lot of funny animes as of late but DMC is ruthlessly, side-splittingly hilarious.

I can't offer comparisons for Madlax and NOIR because they're still on my must-watch list. As for Wolf's Rain... it's really hard to draw comparisons to another show but elements of Darker Than Black are somewhat reminiscent (eg. the plots of both involve a mysterious, delicate glowing girl with the power to influence fate) and I don't know how interrelated it is to Cowboy Bebop but the artwork in both that and Wolf's Rain are really similar, and they both feature amazing music by some of the same artists.

So I was supposed to watch one movie every 2-3 years, and while waiting for the next one I will obviously have forgotten everything that happened in the previous ones? You seriously expect me or anyone else to make this a 7-8 year story? 8( That's crazy talk. I'll do it my way and watch all 4 at once.

Madlax isn't even worth watching IMO. :\ It's the exact same thing as noir. I have El Cazador on my extrenal but I'm afraid to watch it. I already know there's no question Noir > Madlax and El Cazador

Well, most people do go see it in the theatres as they're released. You must have an epic memory because I have already mostly forgotten the first and second rebuild films and will enjoy rewatching the first 3 marathon-style right before seeing the final installment. As great as it is to marathon through a whole show long after it's aired, there's a lot to be said for savouring it as it comes too. Doesn't seem like you're really all that interested in the story if you can wait til 2016 to get it all at once, but if you are then I hope to shit you are really good at avoiding accidental exposure to any spoilers that come along in the meantime.

I think you misunderstood. I'm saying exactly this. If I were to watch them one by one, every 2-3 years(which is about how often they have been released in theaters), I would forget everything that happened in the pervious one(s) by the time the newest one comes out. I don't have a good memory, that was my point.

I agree, however I enjoy having the luxury of watching everything at once. I do this with all my anime. I can't stand watching individual episodes on tv or online, so I download the whole lot and watch it at my own pace.

A few things
1. It it scheduled to be finished in 2013 (the 7-8 years I'm talking about is about the total amount of time since 1.0 was released until 4.0 is scheduled to be released. This would make it a "7-8 years story" if I or anyone else was to watch them as they're being released)
2. I've already seen/read a few spoilers, and it dosen't bother me.
3. Lol at what you're implying.

So, delta_9, you think you're better than me, EH? *shakes fist* Haha nah it's all good, I can't believe I goofed on the end date. I thought for sure it was 2016, well I know we're not getting an English-subbed BluRay of 3.0 before 2013 anyway :\ Now I'm gonna start cross-posting random Eva spoilers to mess with ya :p

Redline was pretty cool but it's one of those style-over-substance flicks so worth a watch for the cool animation I guess but a second viewing? meeeeehhhh

Der, not that I give that much of a shit, but my ramshackle solution to the multi-year conundrum is simply to watch them as they come out, and if I'm bothered about the story not being finished (not yet so far) I'll just download the original series and start watching about where whatever Rebuild film I've just watched cuts off ... Yeah, they're changing the story line, but if you follow this pattern then by the end of the Rebuild series you've kind of gotten four additional films -- Rebuild 1 + original remainders; R2+remaiders; etc. I suppose it'll be increasingly incoherent as the plot of the Rebuild story deviates more and more, but whatever, use your imagination -- or if you're a real fucking dork, write your own fan fiction to repair the continuity. In my version of the story reestablishing continuity involves me showing up at the NERV dorms to deliver a pizza and ending up in a gang bang with Rei, Asuka, and Major Katsuragi while that penguin thing watches and beats off. At least with my approach you get to drop some acid and stare drooling in amazement like a balls-tripp'n toddler at the pretty anime insanity right NOW. I think it's quite an elegant solution. And for the record I'm better than both of you.

No worries man. Sorry if I came off like a jerk :)

Unfortunately I think you're right. It shouldn't be long after it's released in theaters in Japan that there will be pretty good quality downloads available.

Aha, but you're not a mod anymore, so I can put you on my ignore list ;)

call me lame but i've been re-watching sailor moon in Japanese with subs....i'm really enjoying it rofl.

my man was into some shit called samurai champloo for a little and i saw a few episodes of that and enjoyed it.

once i'm done with this sailor moon re-watch i'll have to look into some of the stuff in this thread!

Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop are some of the few animes that have ever moved me. They are both excellent. Not surprising considering they are made by the same guy Shinichirō Watanabe.

Cowboy Bebop is the superior of the two IMO but Samurai Champloo is definitely a close second.

if I came off like a jerk :)

lol no
