Travel The MEGA Travel Thread!

it's an island alright, but only just. less- than 15min boat ride from Aonam (sp?), which is near krabi town.

interesting note there on evil spirits... but then the volume of the party music should be enough. Thai logic for ya, they ain't got none! I think that noise itself is an evil spirit :)

Above posts remind me of the movie The Beach, great movie, a lot of travellers or antitourists may like it.

Sorry to hear about JF, he was always helpful.

Someone on flickr just posted this pic about poverty, if U click on the interactive map, u can see that poverty in Thailand is half what it is in Mexico . . . I thought so!

Interactive map.

^ Uh, that map is kinda misleading. The definition of 'poverty' varies a lot (as they admit and you failed to post). I highly doubt the definition of poverty is the same in Thailand as it is the U.S.

^^^ So U think the map is no good?

U think I should-have copied all the notes too? (The source didn't publish the method they used.)

Isn't obvious that definitions of poverty may differ?

Do U think it's possible to universally define "poverty"?

Is it necessary to begin a sentence with, "Uh"?

Is it necessary to say 'U' in place of 'you'? Our personal methods of speaking online is not the point.

I think you should have disclosed that the map isn't entirely clear and could be considered, and is, IMO without the disclosure, misleading.

No, but you made an assumption that Mexico has at least 2x the poverty level of Thailand (just as you suspected) as if it's the same thing when you have no clue if it's the 'same thing'. At least, that's the way your words read. If that's not what you tried to convey then ok, I guess. It doesn't make any sense to suggest Mexico has more poverty than Thailand when there is no clear-cut scale. Why make that assertion in the first place when you know they scale them differently. And yes, FWIW, scholars have actually figured out ways to decide the 'poorest' countries. If you don't believe that's true then why even post a map suggesting anything of the kind?

It's fairly logical the 'method' they used to create the map is whatever the country itself reports as true. The map itself isn't useless but the conclusion you made be by assuming the map was created on the same scale across the board may be...

Edit: All I suggested you provide is:

This map shows national estimates of the percentage of the population falling below the poverty line.

Definitions of poverty vary considerably among nations. For example, rich nations generally employ more generous standards of poverty than poor nations.

Thailand

Im not sure if theres a travel forum so I put this here. Im looking to go to Thailand this year and wondering for those who have been, whats the best place to go? Im looking at Phuket or Pattaya. I want to do a bit of everything. Eat good food, water sports, girls, sightseeing etc.

Hey mate,

I went to Phuket last year in August. We stayed at the Millennium Hotel which now joins onto the massive shopping centre called Jungceylon. It has 4-5 levels of shopping stores so your bound to find what your looking for.

The food is great at the Millennium but it can get expensive so your better eating out. Your best bet is to walk around and find the restaurant that has the most foreigners in it. That way you can even ask them if the food is ok before you sit down and order.

We didn't do many water sports, just jet skied and did some snorkling around Pi Pi island which is a must if you go.

As sightseeing goes, Defiantly do the 4wd quad bike ride through the jungle upto the giant Monk. Awesome fun, but prepared to get wet and filthy :P Elephant riding is a must too. If the rider asked you if you want a shot, make sure you say yes! Good fun :)

Now the nightlife...You will never experience anything like it. Bangla road is the sex industry capital of the world. Its crazy, during the day it's just like a normal street, then around 6:30pm, they block it off to the traffic and it turns into a mans most wildest dream.

Drinks are cheap as, every single bar girl is a hooker and they will "seem" to love you but you mustn't forget it's ALL about money. You dont even have to look for someone to "hang out with" As soon as you cross that Bangla road barries, your like a pile of shit and the bar girls are flies...They wont leave you alone ;)

Just keen an eye out for the lady boys. Oh and make sure you see the ping pong show!

^^ This has been brought up before actually :)
We have a Travel Megathread here in SO which is a compilation of all the travel-related threads in SO, but it hasn't been updated in some time. We generally just let all general travel threads reside here in SO.

Pattaya and Phuket are the worst places in Thailand. If you want the best places you should try visiting Bangkok for the culture, food and nightlife, Kanchanaburi for the history and scenery and nearbye Erewan waterfalls, the tropic islands in the south for snorkelling, diving, beaches and partying, the jungle areas up north and places like Chang Mai, Chang Rai, Pai , Ayyuthuya in Central Thailand for history and temples.

Pattaya and Phuket are not Thailand, they're just shitty holiday resorts that could be anywhere in the world full of hookers and sad old men. I really despise them both.

Your best bet is to walk around and find the restaurant that has the most foreigners in it.

Or not. Find out where the locals eat those are the best places.

Now the nightlife...You will never experience anything like it. Bangla road is the sex industry capital of the world. Its crazy, during the day it's just like a normal street, then around 6:30pm, they block it off to the traffic and it turns into a mans most wildest dream.

Never experience anything so shit! Seedy, neon lights, tacky, full of sad old men, fake women who will tell you what they think you want to hear, drives me mad! Is that most mens wildest dreams?

Thailand is incredible but the places you're going aren't Thailand, they are everything that is wrong with Thailand.

I want to go to Phuket. Ive never been, so I dont have the opinion that it has been ruined by tourists or anything like that. I am planning on spending a few days in Bangkok.

Exactly. Anyone wanting to experience Thailand shouldn't do anything you have mentioned. I'm not being akward but Phuket and Pattaya could be anywhere in the world. Hell holes too.

Fine if your a seedy, sad old man. Shit if you're any other sort of person. Go see some other parts of Thailand people.

Actually, going through the first couple of pages of this thread, it is more about working in thai than having a holiday. ;)
