The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

but i'd like to hear more reasoning behind the hatred besides just .. "this sucks"

Like explain why you think the casting is awful. I thought the casting was great. Obviously I haven't read the books, ...

well, i have gone into far more detail in the other threads, but i will say that not filming the end of the book is going to make this one a bit stupid, considering...well, i don't want to give any of the story away. just suffice to say it's important to the story.

if you read the books you would understand how horrible i think the casting is. it's hard to get into more detail than that. in particular i find elijah wood to be one of the more annoying actors alive.

me too - i think they did an excellent job of the casting. i think viggo mortensen's casting was an inspired choice.

i most of the hobbits, gandalf, saruman, boromir and faramir were excellently cast.

i can understand people being miffed with the adaptation - given the epic nature of the books and the limitations of the big-screen medium.

however, i'm really interested to hear people expand on why they think the casting was bad and, in particular, who they would have cast to avoid the problem?

i admit this to be more of an emotional issue that i have with the movies; obviously one of my complaints is that the people they chose for most of the parts do not fit my preconceived notions of how the characters looked or how i pictured their mannerisms. i am not sure whom i would cast for any of the parts except that i would have cast ian mckellen as saruman rather than gandalf.

the only member of the cast that i like is rhys-davies; however, since they completely bastardized the character of gimli it makes little difference towards the final product.

given your passed objections to Arwen's inflated/fabricated role in these films i would've thought Liv Tyler would've been the casting mistake you had the most beef with. i cant hate on michael's beef with the way the films were adapted. he has his reasons and they're usually well supported by a nearly scary knowlege of and love of the original books.

*crosses day off calander*

Well, I guarantee that I have an equal knowledge and love for the books. I read them first in 1980, and many times since. And yes, I read the associated literature. I still thought the films were terrific.

I went expecting to see "Lord of the Rings: Adapted for the Screen and Interpreted by Peter Jackson, Not Intended To Be Read Off Of Paper".

I went knowing plot points would have to change, since some things that are in literature are not cinematic.

I actually hoped the scouring would be cut. I don't need another half hour at the end of an already 3.5 hour movie. In truth, I think the denouement of the book goes on longer than it needs to.

There are hundreds of things I would have liked to have seen that didn't make it to the screen, but really I recognize that none of them are very important to the story line, and when you're making a set of very long films, you have to stick to what advances the plot.

When the finale comes in this movie, all but the most singleminded fanboys are going to be ready to go home. I could see people leaving early if they actually showed a hundred pages worth of wrapup.

I have to admit I never read the books, but I will probably endeavor to do so if I ever have the time again in my life to read books for pleasure (what a concept).... but all I can say, and this is really coming from the bottom of my heart here is:

The Lord of the Rings movies have beaten the ever loving shit out of both Star Wars and the Matrix franchises and ought to be recognized as the preeminent movie franchise of our generation. George Lucas and the Wachowinski (sp?) brothers have nothing on Peter Jackson, a man whose tortured genius gave us not only these films but also the classic "Meet the Feebles."

Movie theater in Amsterdam is showing all 3 movies back2back , i'm going to see 9-hours of lotr with almost no breaks, i must be insane, but i'm very looking forward to it.

i can recommend the extended dvd versions, the sets that consist of 4 discs, a shitload of background info about every aspect of the movies, and about how Tolkien came up with the story.

I don't normally care too much about movies any more, but I have to admit I am getting pretty excited about seeing this. :D

Aragorn should follow the exact footsteps as his ancestor Isildor and defeat the ring for the trilogy to end perfectly in my opinion, hopelly this is the case, otherwise I wont be too happy if the dark eye is all we see throughout this trilogy, as the hype was for nothing!

^^ You're going to hate me for this, most of you probably will but I went and saw it yesterday, Dec 15th, on my birthday, it was a total suprise to me, but apparently my cousin's girlfriend got these tickets on ebay, it was a charity showing and all the proceeds went to benifit children with autism.

I loved it, I loved all of the books, and am very big fan of the movies, they might not be as true-to-life as most avid tolkien fans wished, but they are good none the less. :D

Well, what do you think? (LOTR)

I think it was pretty good, were some slow parts at the beginning (that could have just been the drugs). But the last battle scenes were pretty damn good.
Just wanna hear what you guys thought?

I am assuming you are talking about LOTR III, there havent been screenings in melbourne yet have they? Or is this sydney or elsewhere?

Hmm who knows, I will comment next week when I see it, late!
