The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

^^^indeed... that was golden! :) i thought he was gonna be all martyr-like, instead he was more like showboating and disgracing them. :) that's hardcore to say the least. hehe.

You guys thought the ending was dragged out? The book ending is so much different and longer than the movie ending. The Shire is in ruins when they return home. That aside, i thought this was an excellent movie, the best of the three like I imagined. Just wish i had a better seat :\

Yeah I was kinda hoping that would be in it too...

I enjoyed this movie unlike the fucking two towers which I trashed on here somewhere previously (has probably been erased).

Although that whole ghost army thing was made up (well I can't remember it being in the book anyway), unlike fucking dwarf tossing it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie. Two thumbs up for the battle of Gondor. It was done really well.

My only other disapointment was that I thought the she-lob scene could have been done a bit better. The book gives you this mental image of Sam driving his sword upwards into her and her impaling herself upon it, covering Sam in black mess. That was really played down in the movie.

Oh and that arguement between Sam and frodo was very gay...

Other than that loved it... (Can't help the bitching <-- read the books probably four times each before Peter Jackson had even concieved the idea of making them into movies...).

I know with the length of the movie and the amount they needed to fit in to end the trilogy it would be hard, but I cant believe no one has mentioned that they would have liked to see Lord Sauron at least come back one more time at the end, and be defeated by Aragorn and his sword the same way Isildor had done?

Didn't happen that way in the book so that would have really pissed me off :)

Anyone notice Frodo's.....spoilers.....finger is back in the last scenes, after the...you know...chew it off bit.

Alright so I saw it twice no, both times on pot brownies (the second time I was offered free brownies, what am I gunna do say no? ;) ). Being a reader of the books, here's what I think:

- The beginning scene with Smeagol and Deagol, and transformation of Smeagol into Gollum was AWESOME. When I first saw it I wasn't sure what I was seeing, I thought it was back in the shire or something. I think we gained a much much better understanding of the true power of the ring, as well as Gollum's persona.

- The scene with the Palantir was cool, but I wanted to see it done the same way in the book. If memory serves me correctly, in the book that ball was knocked out of Saruman's staff when he came to the porch to talk to Gandalf. Gandalf does some sort of magic and cracks his staff and basically let's Saruman know that Gandalf is now badass and won't take anymore shit. This is where the ball comes from I think. I would have liked to see a little bit of that in the movie.

- Thought the charge of the Rohirrim was awesome. I'm kinda a history buff so when I saw that scene I was saying to myself "so...this is what a devastating horsecharge must have been like back in medieval times." Really an awesome scene.

- Every single scene with Arwen in it made me want to cringe. The second time around I literally closed my eyes and just chilled for a little while whenever it was a scene with her. That scene about half an hour into the movie...where she's on the horse...so bad, just sooo soo bad...

- Gondor I thought was done awesome. Everything about it. The battle, the city, Denethor.

- I didn't particularly like the ghosts. I mean yeah they were cool, but the whole neon-green just threw me off. I pictured them as shadows kinda, maybe they shoulda been black. I dunno, its a little nitpicky thing of mine. They could have done the ghosts better I thought. They could have had feet too rather than floated. I just felt they were underdone as far as special effects go.

- Gollum was funnier and more awesome than ever. Frodo and Sam's part of the saga was done really well. I thought it was really weak in the Two Towers becuase they left out Shelob. I stand by what I've always said, that they should have had shelob in the Two Towers movie and have it end with Frodo apparently dead (Peter Jackson could lead the audience to believe this) and Sam as the only one left to destroy the ring. It coulda ended so cliffhanger-like! Anyways, rambling, back on topic.

Overall, thought it was an awesome movie, although the ending was a bit weak I thought. I liked alot of things about this movie, and some dislikes, but hey, can't have it every way you want it, and this was by far an amazing experience to see the whole trilogy to be put on screen like it was. I mean I was impressed with like 80% of how they portrayed everything, and me being a nitpicky bookreader, I mean shit that's gotta be saying something, right? I thought it was very well done.

---------Things I would have liked to see that were in the book and not in the movie--------

- Ghan Buri Ghan, woulda been really cool to see a little bit with him. I coulda swore I went on www.imdb.com and saw his character in the credits, so going into the movie I assumed I would see him. Maybe he's in the extended DVD?

- I originally posted that I thought that the scouring of the Shire is not much to be upset about. but that was ASSUMING that they would have wrapped up the ending nicer than they did. I didn't really like the movie ending, it was way too long for them to NOT have put Saruman in. Its almost like they decided to leave out the part with Saruman and just fill it in with blanks rather than to re-do the ending a little bit better. I mean, that's how I felt about it.

- THE CONFRONTATION BETWEEN GANDALF AND THE WITCH KING! Where the fuck was this scene? It coulda been sooooo badass! I mean in the movie there's a part where an orc says "what about the white wizard?" and the witch king goes "I will break him." And I was like "OOOOH SHIT HELL YEAH HERE IT COMES!" I anticipated becuase in the book there's a little confrontation between the two of them when Gondor gets attacked, and even though it was a small part, it coulda been done so awesomely I was really let down. I mean why would the witch king say he would break gandalf and then they never ever meet? This made it seem like there was something missing even more.

- It seems like there is going to be an extended scene explaining the White Tree better in the DVD or something. It didn't seem to fit right in the movie.

----------------------

Anyways, these are just nitpicky things that I don't think detract too much from the overall movie. I thought it was awesome and can't wait for the extended version. And having felt good and lucky about seeing all three in the theatres, I think I'll be watching these movies for a long time after.

no. as gandalf is speaking to saruman, after the staff is broken wormtongue throws it at the small party gathered at the base of the tower.

Ah right. Its been about a year since my reading, thanks for the clarification.

I'd also like to add that YAY FOR THE PIPE WEED. Merry and Pippin obviously looked so stoned to me when they were sitting on the wall in the beginning eating salted pork.

And the best part that made everyone in the theatre chuckle, especially the stoners: when Pippin gives Merry the last of the Longbottom leaf, having run out of the other stuff and tells him "you smoke too much, Pip."

Haha that scene was my favourite from the three books and I'm glad they included it in this movie. I was pissed off hardcore when that scene was not in the two towers and thought they had left it out...

i saw this agian tonight and im so glad i did. i had just had my wisdom teeth out and was on a bit of vicodin when i saw it the first time. this was easily my favorite of the 3 films. there seriously was not any significant length of time where my eyes left the screen, and i'd already sorta seen the movie.

Not to mention the fact that Sarumon and Grima Wormtongue were never mentioned, so um, I guess they evaporated?

Sarumon is mentioned when they arive @ Isengard. Gandalf simply writes him off as powerless. Im sure more goes on in the book and i was kind of pissed about that too. Nothing like two old men fighting eachother with magic sticks:)

, how the hell did Samwise get the ring when Frodo had been taken by the Orcs to the tower? If you read the book, you'd know - however, Frodo's web was intact when the Orcs took him,

thats totally false. the web was split, exposing frodo's face. this would only require a slight suspension of disbelief allowing Sam to remove it b4 the orcs got to frodo.

im so stoked to have the ability to own all 3 of these (extended) movies on DVD. classic:)

film: Return of the King - extended edition (new trailer)

(I'm not sure if this should go into the old ROTK thread or not.)

The extended editions of Fellowship and Two Towers were much better than the theatrical cuts, in my opinion. There was more character development, more special effects, more music, and, in strange way, the stories seemed to go faster and flow better than they did in the shorter versions. While it would be impossible to make a movie trilogy that was completely faithful to Tolkein's source material, Peter Jackson seems to get pretty close to nailing most of the important points from the books.

And finally, this Decmeber, the last extended edition will be released. Preview with new scenes at the link below...

yeah, i'm pretty pumped for this - wish i had broadband and could d/l the trailer though.

the extended editions of the earlier two films have more than lived up to my expectations, and i have almost absolute faith in peter jackson - he's made these not just amazing films, but amazing *experiences* so far - and i expect that this will be just as good.

i can't wait to put this and the other two films on, get fourteen bowls of popcorn and watch all three extended editions in a row :D

any links as to just *info* (rather than a preview download) on what has been added, by any chance?

nb. i think this should be fine to stay as its own thread for the moment, though perhaps merged once the discussion moves from the point of the extended edition back more to the film itself?

I'm getting this off santa :)

I also think the other two extended editions are far better and I'm sure this will carry on the tradition

DVD: Return of the King extended version released today!!!

I have never anticipated the release of a DVD as I have this one!!! I must say that although I have yet to watch it I am so excited to see all fifty minutes of extra scenes, which I have read are absolutely amazing and were only cut from the film to adhere to the films time contraints Supposedly the final confrontation between Saruman and Gandolf is top notch!

I promised a friend I would wait and watch it with him this weekend but I am not sure I can wait. ;) It just looks so damn cool standing along side the first two extended box sets! Finally, Jackson's entire vision of Tolkien's most famous tale is available to all who wish to see it.

Thanks Pete!!! :)

I feel like such a nerd for getting excited about this.

At least I can take comfort in the fact that I can still get an erection even if I'm not wearing my wizard hat.

Just finished watching this one tonight. Absolutely amazing!

If you are a LOTR fan and don't own the extended versions of the three films they should be the first things you buy with all those Christmas gift certificates you get on Saturday. ;)

nah...supposedly the scouring was never filmed, although there appears to be foreshadowing of the scouring in the first film.

i've only watched the first hour so far, and the changes are fantastic. the beginning of Return of the King, especially the bit at Orthanc never seemed to flow right in the theatrical cut -- it works much better here. there is a more thorough palantir set-up and other small changes that help add to the characters.

Nope, no scouring of the shire. Piece of crap trilogy, hopefully one day someone will release a fateful adaptation to the books rather than glorified hollywood fluff. Oh well at least they put saruman back in the extended version.
