killing saruman? what the fuck were they thinking? worst part ever. And it's such a pitiful, shameless death. That scene, for all christopher lee rambles in the commentary about it's 'pure tolkien', is utter bullshit. yeah, they had to set up the palantir falling yada yada christopher lee in the movie yada yada BUT WHY BOTHER PUTTING HIM IN IF YOU'RE JUST GOING TO KILL HIM? they should've filmed the scouring of the shire. at least for the extended release...

the commentary is quite good though. the director/writer commentary is good, and the actors' one is hilarious, thanks to billy boyd and dominic monaghan? stealing the show...when it's not bernard hill, ian mckellan or christopher lee rambling on about some bullshit (they take it really seriously), those two are a tag team comedic duo...some of their lines are hilarious. the extended version, on the whole, is well worth it...there are a few scenes to do with sam+frodo in mordor that should have been in the theatrical release, and a few in other places that are superb, but there are many others that were cut out with good reason. still a great dvd.

I thought the extended version was a major improvement over the theatrical-release ROTK.

I too thought that Saruman's death was pathetic, though the fall was pretty cool. I can see why Peter Jackson didn't film the "Scouring of the Shire"--it's not the best part of the novel, IMO-- nevertheless I feel it was a really pivotal part of the book, as it showed the true strength of the Hobbits and the final triumph of the "little guys" against evil. It just shows the lengths to which Jackson was willing to go to "Hollywoodify" a good story for profit, but I guess we can only expect so much--after all, they had no idea if the movies were even going to break even at first.

The scene between Saruman and the Witch King was truly spectacular, though it was a huge departure from the book--but hey, it was really cool.

The scene I think they should have left in was the Mouth of Sauron scene, as it makes the desperation of the fight before the Black Gate--and Aragorn's tears--more understandable. Not to mention that the Mouth was such a deliciously gruesome villain, though his appearance also departed from the book's.
