The "I can't sleep" megamerged insomnia thread

^^ Yup, forgot to mention the Caffiene myself, no no at night.
 
Get into a daily schedule... get up at the same time every day (early).
Valarian and Kava Kava are the best herbal sleep aides.
If you need prescription strength sleep aids, there are a few different ones you can get from a doctor, one being Ambien (what I take for insomnia).
 
Try melatonin (1-3 mg) 1-2 hours before your desired bedtime. It does not knock you out like a sleeping pill, but it will make it easier to fall asleep.
 
I've got terrible insomnia, NOTHING has fixed it, things like Ambien just help it for a couple days then it no longer has any effect and I just stay up forever, and I dont do uppers or anything.

I guess I'm looking for a quick fix at the moment. I'm at grad school and am in the middle of writing a bunch of papers, so I don't have much time to spare for exercise... and cutting down on the caffeine doesn't seem realistic either.

I think I have a hard time switching gears from writing papers to sleeping. When I do get to sleep I end up dreaming about what I'm writing (although it tends to make no sense).

Anyway, I think I'll start by checking out some of those herbal sleep aids and see what happens... otherwise I guess it's off to the doctor.
 
In my experience the best prescription sleep aid I've used for insomnia is Zopiclone which puts you to sleep quickly, but tends to wear off in about 5-6 hours which means you may wake up too early but aren't drowsy in the morning. The best OTC aid (again IMO) is Phenergan (Promethazine hydrochloride), 25 - 50mg gets you to sleep quite fast, you wont wake up until the alarm clock goes off, but the down side is you can feel drowsy for a while in the morning.

Having said all that though, natural techniques as mentioned above like keeping regular bed times, avoiding stimulants in the afternoon etc are definitely the best way in the long term if possible... you don't wanna be taking pills every night for ever if you can help it.
 
Seriously man - Speak with the Doctor and ask about a prescription medicine called "Stilnocs". It works a treat! Drop 2 Stilnocs and hour before sleeping and you'll be amazed at the result! It's an amazing drug. I like taking it and stay awake as well, makes you feel really kinda dazed out and drunk, though as soon as you hit the bed your out..

I don't like diphenhydramine, which is what is in alot of the OTC sleep aides. You get tolerant quickly, and high doses are very... not helpful because it can mess you up so bad.

Melatonin is a good OTC option. For Rx meds I like ambien and seraquell (sp?). But the best way is setting and following a routine, no caffiene, ect. and all that stuff.

Unless you have a bad physiological or psychological sleep disorder, of course. Then you need to see a doctor.
 
what do YOU do when..you can't SLEEP

Nah this isn't an insomnia medicines thread. I have none, and it's not that I can't sleep..It's that I sleep so late and wake up so late it's ridiculous. I slept til 3:30 this afternoon, won't sleep again til around 5am..shouldn't even climb in bed until then, though I won't be tired then either. SO, what do you do to pass the time away? When's nothing on tv, you've got nothing but network channels, your friends are sleeping or can't drive to pick you up, no drugs to do, nothing good to watch on the dvd player...

So?
 
that is the exact same with me, ive bin goin to bed way to late and gettin up way to later (similar hours that uved mentioned) due to work, which i have now stopped but im still in the pattern of it. im also to lazy to go to the Doc and get sleeping meds. i usually surf BL until i cant concentrate on wat im reading... then i have a whack and try and sleep. :\
some one else got any sleeping tips.

Oh yes, the infamous circle of horrible sleep pattern. Wake up at 8am go to sleep at 1am, wake up at 10am go to sleep at 3am, wake up at 1pm, go to sleep at 8am. I've tried explaining this to other people but they just never understand.

I suggest learning when good shit comes on TV during the night. You have the Simpsons at 11, then King of the Hill at 11:30, then two episodes of Third Rock from the Sun from 12:00-1:00. Then you have to make due until 1:30am since those bastards at Fox decided to start showing reruns of the news at 1:00am instead of more good stuff. Then at 1:30am is Carson on NBC which sucks ass but you only have to make it 30 minutes. Then it's Jay Leno and Conan from 2:00am-4:00am. Then you can catch the news or switch it up for some money making infomercials.

Anyway, I'm a computer nerd so I entertian myself by writing overly complicated code to make my life hard and playing video games I've already played too much. Of course you can pass some time with masterbating. Then fill in any blanks by staring at the walls or scraping pipes hoping for some precious resin.
 
Thanks for the replies so far. Yeah, i hate talk shows! If i had the satellite here, I'd chill down here til 5am or whenever and watch movies, skinnamax, foreign stuff, etc. I'm filling my 150mg trazodone prescription probably tomorrow or monday, i gotta fix this schedule before I go to school at the end of august. I need a good sleep pattern damnit. I think i'll have it at pitt..between this 90, 150mg script of trazodone, access to AWESOME weight lifting facilities..soooo much walking, lots of humping that i hope i'll be doing but probably won't, and klonopin..i think i can handle.

But what to do now..hm. If I had a livejournal or cared to write i'd probably do that..i'm more of a reader though. If i had drugs i'd do them too but..arg. I was cleaning my room earlier, finished all except vacuuming (it broke). How do i unclog it? There's no visable clogs..

Late at night, when i actually go to my bed, I'll usually put on Family guy, or a super long dvd and just keep that on all night/day long.
 
I have some FREAKY-ASS sleep patterns, that's for damn sure. It's hardly ever the same from night to night but I'd estimate that when I have nothing to do, I go to bed at 6 am, wake up at 3 pm. And still feel really tired.

Anyway, tonight I'm going to relax and hang out, paint some t-shirts, practice bass. It's really boring but what can you do...nobody else is awake.
 
Here is my schedule:
-1130:Get home, come on computer till 1, or 2
-1 or 2:Watch famaily guy or athf, depending on it beeing 1 or 2
-uh after that:Porn
-after...:listen to music till about 330
-330:Sit in bed thinking cause i cant sleep till 430
-430:Sleep
 
Drawing, if you can't think of what to draw think patterns, Music, TV (adult swim is pretty entertaining or finding a good movie, I was absolutly thrilled when I found Leon: The professional as the late night movie on AMC, I have been wanting to watch it for abit and damn was that good)! Writing or just reflecting on life!
