the guitar players megathread

its an unusual colour. is it a jaguar? dont you just dream of the guitar with this perfect tone that is so rich and satisfying. im almost certain a vintage jazzmaster will fulful my needs. i think its so cool when you get the matching headstock too. im such a geek.

at the moment im learning to solder so i can modify and repair guitars and amps. to get started im building a strobe light. it basically entails soldering together a load of diodes, resistors and capcitors to a circuitboard. the guitar repair guy rips me off all the time charging like £60 just to replace a capacitor in my amp. next time ill do it myself.

I`ve got a (now discontinued) Fender Jaguar bass in sunburst. It`s awesome. It`s got all the sliders and wheels on it like the guitar version, and an active/passive switch too. Me rikey!

Not my 'dream' guitar as such, but I really want to get an American Strat... love the look of the Seinna Sunburst with Rosewood fret board. I love my upgraded epi to bits but I love playing my dads strat when I get a chance and wouldn't mind having the option for different sounds.

Also I tend to change my strings about every 3-6 months depending how much I play. Usually as soon as they start noticably loosing their brightness.

the other day i went to the music shop and played a strat woth £2700 through a marshall. i played for like half an hour i think the shop owner was getting kind of pissed of.

now when i pay my mexican strat at home its so crappy in comparison.

Haha - I once did that with an American Tele. They are pretty nice too actually.

Yeah my dad's strat is a '59 re-issue made in mexico, so I can tell it's not perfect plus it has vintage style pickups so has a diffferent sound. And it has a V-shaped neck instead of C.

But it's enough to give me a hint of what Strats are like :)

my strat has a few upgrades like better pickups and solid steel tremolo block which make a big difference so its not bad.

what guitar are you playing at the mo?

Already forgotten :p ?

I posted a picture on the other page. It's a standard epi les paul, but a limited edition one. I think there may be a slight upgrade to one or two of the peices of hardware, nothing major though. It had a standard epi pot on the neck but a 'plus' one on the bridge position. Had a fairly nice sound anyway but I put a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the bridge and Jeff Beck on the neck.

At the moment I feel my amp is holding the guitar back a bit though.

sorry my memory is fucked. thats a nice axe. i put better pickups in my epiphone SG and it made an amazing difference.

I replaced my Jaguar`s black plastic pickup covers with cream pick up covers. It really changed the sound of my bass for the better.;)
I`m kidding, but it does make it look a bit more vintage with the cream/sunburst color combo.

so whats your dream guitar?

i really want to get a vintage jazzmaster. im gonna go all out and spend like £2000 one day soon.

my dream guitar as well--fat singles, sunburst--or If it's solid color, i'd get it designed

^^^^^^^^^^(way back up there) coffee drinker, those ibanez artcores look fucking awesome. I'm used to ergonomic, small solid bodies--and playing a gretsch and any acoustic guitar really--I find uncomfortable

how does that one feel/play?

Just wondering, what strings do you guys use?

For a while I've switched between D'Addario XL and Ernie Balls ... but I've been wanting to try some others out.

Going to be putting a set of Elixir Nanowebs on when they arrive.

I'm rocking some cheap nickel plated steel right now, but those nanowebs play like butter. I don't know how long they last though

^They last a long time.
Cleartone makes the best strings IME for electric, and Elixer is the best for Acoustic IMO.
I usually go with D'addario Nickle-wound 9's for my electric. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They are perfect all-round strings.

I just decided to buy the most expensive strings in the store for my cousin for a christmas present, the Cleartone 10s, and my cousin's guitar STILL sounds like they are brand new strings.
I remember commenting on how great the strings sounded a couple weeks ago, without thinking that he'd still be using the ones I got him for christmas, and he's like "those're the ones you bought me" and I was blown away at how good they sounded at least 6 months after putting them on. They sounded new and crisp. The tone was great. I would highly recommend springing the extra cash for those strings before a big gig or if you're recording or something special.
But for solid day to day use there's nothing wrong with D'Addarios whatsoever.
I've never used Ernie Balls now that I think of it, so I have no opinions on them, but I'm sure they're fine.
I'm using Elixer nanoweb 11s (I think, it's been a while since I changed them) for my acoustic almost exclusively.

Oh and I just recorded my second favorite Jimi Hendrix song of all time, with full singing. I hope it's not too harsh on the ears :D http://soundcloud.com/jamschmitt/wind-cries-mary-one-take

I'm playing some light Ernie Ball Earthwoods. Surprised me how good they were as I don't generally thinkg 'Ernie Ball' for acoustic strings. Normally I play Martins or D'Addarios.

ernie ball power slinkys all the way. ive never been able to tell any difference between brands tbh. i just buy the set with the best combination of gauges.
