the guitar players megathread

alright, ive got a fresh stack of drugs. time to get the guitar out and see what i can create today. ill keep you posted if anything interesting happens. i have a kind of half lightning bolt, half deerhunter idea bouncing round my brain but well see.

I'm guessing you're referring to the music itself, rather than her lyrics. Cuz I think her lyrics are often dark. They're almost like musical fables or fairy tales. But I dunno, if you listen to her first solo album it's very dark. Helium's Magic City is more upbeat in places, but I actually prefer it to the first album (and I like the dark stuff). I think you'd like the first album very much judging by the things you've already mentioned liking. Here's one of my favourites from the album.

Mary Timony - Valley Of 1,000 Perfumes. ;)

Sorry for not getting back soon, I often disappear off bluelight for small periods :p

Yeah, I do mean the music. I have also noticed that her lyrics and tone are quite often dark. Something which makes her stuff stand out I think - makes her stuff recognizable despite some slightly different styles here and there. That and her great guitar playing!! :)

Makes you want to fiddle about with strange tunings and dischordant sounds. Do you know of any tabs of her songs?

And I quite like 1,000 Perfumes, ta! Will try listen to some more of her stuff later.

Look forward to hearing some tunes if you manage to make some progress. I think I'm going to go follow suite and combine drugs and guitar, good mix :D

Wow. Definitely crazy. wasn't expecting that. :D

That's not my sort of style but I liked some of the stuff. I think it'd be better if you changed the levels so the guitar is louder. Drums are drowing out the rest.

If the guitar had more bite to it and you increased the level slowly as it comes to the middle - that'd be cool. Bit of building up.

I don't think I have any way to record at the moment, otherwise I might give it a shot. I'm not that amazing, composing isn't my strong point but hey, may as well try!

wow great advice about the mixing levels.

ive turned down the drums and turned up the guitar and played with the eq on the guitar to give it more bite. see if you think its any better.

all you need is a crappy microphone and recording software. i use Cool Edit Pro. its ancient software but its really good. if you need any advice on how to do some recording then give me a shout.

Yeah great! Sounds much better like that. Glad to be of assistance :)

One of the parts of the riff reminds me of Pink Floyd - Run Like Hell ... just, heavier.

I'm currently stuck over at my parents house and the only mic I have is the laptop in-built one, but ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 my webcam/mic have been f*cked. Got drivers re-installed etc. but the PC just doesn't see them. It's as if they don't exist.

What sort of guitars does everyone use?

Here is a pic of my guitar. Not the best picture but it'll do :)

It's an Epi LP Standard Plus Top (Ltd. Ed. - Desert Burst) with SD Jazz neck and SD JB bridge. I use 10s.

Not pictured is my crappy acoustic. Sx Custom something or other. It's cheap and cheerful, but serves it's purpose. I went off using it for ages until I tried a set of Martin Custom Light (11s) 80/20 Bronze strings on it... suddenly gave it a nice warm tone it was lacking before.

I also get to play around with my Dad's Fender'59 Re-Issue Strat (Fiesta Red) whenever I go to visit the folks.

I used to own a Epiphone Thunderbird Bass too, but sold it to my friend as I needed something with a smaller fret scale. I really miss playing Bass :(

Any song recommendations? :)
I'm a fairly decent guitarist, currently doing Grade 6, wanna learn a nice technically and musically challenging acoustic piece, but I just can't really think of any :L

so i got a new amp--giving my old ibanez 10W to my bro.

Funny story-- I started playing guitar after tripping acid, during which i played bass, and that kinda set me off. My bro tripped acid and played bass and now he wants an electric too.

Weird coincidence, but I used it as an excuse to get a new amp--I got a Fender Mustang modeling amp. Sounds fucking awesome, the model of the fender tube reverb is pretty close; my friend who actually has a reverb and played mine was astounded at the quality--for 100 bucks no less.

Anyways it has some models and effects--and a usb hookup for recording; I might post some stuff fairly soon, and would appreciate feedback.

I'm liking your tunes a lot, Lazyscience. :) <3

Oh no worries. Me too. :D

Absolutely. She often throws in fairy tale-esque lyrics, or something kinda mystical about. That coupled with her unusual tunings (which often have a drone-like effect) and guitar style make it sound sort of magical. Or at least to me.

Apparently she teaches guitar privately from her home. Why can't I live anywhere near DC?! :X (or at least I think that's where she resides).

Good good. :)

By the by, I just treated myself to a new guitar strap. I'd really love to get my hands on one of those PVC Built By Wendy straps, but they're pretty hard to find. :(

ooooH that strap looks soo comfy!
I never heard of that company before, thanks for posting that!
Seriously the biggest problem I've ever faced playing the guitar wasn't anything technique related or music related, it was standing there for hours with a crappy strap that just digs into my shoulder. This mainly presented itself during band practices because they'd take forever, not so much on stage when the adrenaline is pumping and you're only out there for like 1 1/2 hours.

so do you folks use your thumb to fret the bass notes? i just dont see any other way of playing bar chords when youre standing up.

Yea I do, not always, it depends on the context of the song. I like the Jimi Hendrix style of playing where he hits the bass note of a chord with his thumb, and then noodles around with his other fingers on the higher strings. It sounds so beautiful when he does it, and lots of gitar players have taken up that style since. John Mayer does it, I think Jack Johnson does it (if he doesn't his style still sounds a lot like that), Steve Ray Vaughan definitely did it.

Theres the first thing I ever uploaded to my sound cloud. It's just some random jamming that I recorded through my laptop mic. I'm sorry for the terrible quality of the sound. I am working to improve my recording capabilities it's just that I'm starting from scratch with this computer I'm using.
I'm basically just trying to fuck around with the b minor scale, I think, and trying to play as many weird rhythms as possible without losing the beat.
