Over in the UK a surprisingly large number of terminal cancer patients don't get enough pain relief. It could be that 'blitz' spirit of the 70+ generation, still its a shocking figure, afraid I can't remember.

Can someone explain why cancer is painful? I can see why chemo is, but why the cancer part is, if that makes sense. :\

Went to the GP today about my never-ending pain, was trying to get referred back to the neurologist. They asked if I was stressed at work...hahaha. haha. ha. Went on about full on muscle spasms in my face and how the drugs aren't working any more and they just said that I shouldn't be on all those drugs being a young man etc, well exactly hence why I want to find a cause...

They want to sent me back to ENT person cos its in the sinus area etc, when I know flat out its not likely to help given that last time they didn't find anything and sent me to a neurologist instead who was a lot more helpful. Is it possible to self-refer oneself to private specialists? Prob be expensive but fuck it I need a solution!

Can I post about cold related pain, because my room is so fucking cold, I just want to stay in bed all day fucking long!

:!

For fuck's sake my neck is even worse than last night right now. Can't handle much of this anymore...I think I'm going to go into that new doc's office on tuesday sobbing and begging for real meds :!

^ Sad but true :(

Very few docs are willing to prescribe owt stronger than codeine/DHC/tramadol on an ongoing basis. Most will prescribe morphine (usually Oramorph) only for very limited periods for acute problems. Anything stronger than that you'll most likely need to see some kinda specialist to be properly assessed. Which can take a while sometimes. Does depend on several factors though so you might be in luck and is certainly worth trying. Docs can be masively overly suspicious of people complaining of ongoing pain and you really need to be a patient patient and keep chipping away at 'em. Take what they offer - even if you know it's not enough - and keep going back if/when it's not working. As mentioned before, maybe pregabalin/gabapentin would be more useful to you than the minor opies as I do believe your pain is nerve-related? Docs are probably more likely to script them too so might be worth a shot, Pagey.

Asking for or expecting strong opiates straight off is probably unlikely to be successful and also get you tagged with the "drugseeker" label which makes it unbelievably hard to get scripted anything no matter how much it's needed. Took me literally years of patiently accepting my deeply unsatisfactory (but admittedly better than nothing... for the week or so that it lasts anyway 8)) script and regular reminders to me GP that it simply wasn't dealing with my pain before gaining enough trust to get a referral. All because I have history of abusing benzos and opiates both prescribed and otherwise. Can see where they're coming from in not trusting me but even so it really is a lot of convincing to get them to believe a word you say once you get that "drugseeker" tag :\

I'm seeing some specialist pain management unit in cheltenham and its bullshit . Its all CBT and especially since they know I've self medicated I am never ever going to see anything stronger than tramadol or DHC. I really hate how they treat prescriptions in this country, and dare I try to help myself I am demonised. ARGH.

Yeah my GP is open to DHC but I expect no more than that. This is only the case as Amitrip lowered my seizure threshold so caused me to have 3 seizures, so I'm coming off it (very horrible)

She also feels sorry for me as my first ever seizure fractured my vertebrae which lead to all my pain, as its crushed the vertebrae. Even with that she is open to DHC but deffo no more.

Having a past heroin addiction does not help. But it even without I would not he put on morphine long term.

I wouldn't mind being given DHC at a reasonable dosage ON ITS OWN. Like the old DF118s or something, but not those bullshit 10/500 DHCs I got prescribed. Fucking 3.2mg more than paramol , total bullshit.

You may not have a previous post of mine, so I'll say it again.

I take two 12.5mg codeine+ibuprofen and either two paramol or two 12.5mg codeine+paracetamol which is 50mg of codeine in one go, which is 10mg less than the 60mg you will get from your GP. I do it three times a day, sometimes take the extra parmol/paracetamol dose.

That with my increasing gabapetin is doing OK. Not quite though, and I'm worried when I'm fully of then amitrip it will not do the job.

Just saw these sorry.

Don't get your hopes to high :(

Well you guys were certainly right to tell me this..saw the doctor today and he prescribed me some sort of gel thingy that I tried out and it doesn't help, like at all. I'm so sick of this. I feel like I've been through hell and back this past week, what with heroin withdrawals and landing myself in the hospital with an ibuprofen overdose and my neck is just...literally unbearable.
Shambles it really sucks doctors can't seem to have any kind of trust in us. It gets to a point where it just isn't fucking fair :(

Thanks for listening to me go on and on about this btw <3

Is what this thread is for, Pagey. When all else fails whinging is all we have :\

Is the gel-thing one of those heat pads? Meh. They have their uses. Very handy for kidney pain whilst clucking. Well, better than nowt anyway. Give it a go - might help a bit. But definitely go back to the docs if/when it doesn't. It's persistence that tends to work, I'd say. You need to make it abundantly clear when things aren't helping and not take no for an answer whilst also being open to whatever's offered and also being respectful to the utmost. Is a tightrope walk to say the least but you do get taken seriously eventually. But ain't gonna happen overnight I can promise you :|

In pain meds news, got given a strip of pregabalin recently. They do seem to help a bit but not all that much really. Make me dizzy as fuck too. And very fuzzy of head the next day. Seem to be great for sleep though - slept like a baby the last few nights. My pain ain't really nerve-related (afaik) though so doesn't do much on that side of things. Maybe boosts the codeine a tad but not enough to notice hardly.

Hey Pagey, sorry to hear it didn't go as planned.

But as Shambles said its a tightrope, my advice is give everything a go. Firstly they won't jump you straight to 'opiates' they will want to see you being open and trying other ways of pain relief, so tick the boxes. Second, you never know it might help!

Keep at and eventually you will get progress. :\

@Shambles I get Gabapetin if your being prescribed them, you gotta start at low dose I'm started with 100mg tablet a day, then worked up to 100 3 times and so on till I get to 1900mg so that any side affects don't hit me severely, also tolerance to the drug in terms of side effects rockets very quickly. Amazing sleep ain't it!

This thread is fucking so good, to have a good moan, to help others, to get help.

Love it! <3

I

Ya. I didn't really check up on doses so just dived in at 600mg (pregabalin not gabapentin) and it absolutely twatted me (in kombination with ketamine anyway). Dropped to 400mg next day and it did sod all so took another 400mg which sent me woozy again. Tried 200mg tonight and aside from making my eyes a bit wobbly it's not doing much. Is an odd drug. But not doing much for pain and is shite recreationally so probably not for me :\

Yepp. I did try it out but it really didn't do much. Thing is that's only for the muscle pain, I told the doctor the nerve pain was what I really needed help with and he kinda ignored me. Ugh. You're right, I'm just gonna have to keep at it. I'm just so frustrated cuz it took me about a year to get the doc back home to prescribe me frickin' codeine, the whole point of seeing a new one is because that wasn't helping enough.
Tbh I kinda wonder if my shrink might have informed him of my heroin use since I see both of them through the university :\

Mmh that's odd for the pregabalin, I'd heard it was pretty helpful. Maybe it's because those were your first times with it so you got more of the side-effects?

Yeah, it's worth persevering for I suppose. And hey, I've waited this long, what's a few more months of humouring the doctor gonna do :)

And agreed, this thread is fantastic <3

Was just a random strip so not really much to go on. Might have some more coming my way soon but don't hold out much hope frankly. They're more for nerve-related pain and that's not really what I have. They do make me quite pleasingly fuzzy at times though. Quite possibly a case of finding a happy dose. They ain't from me doctor though so unless they start doing summat useful soon they'll remain but a novelty failure :\

And in your case, ya - keep at 'em. You won't get shit initially and if you've been tagged as an opiate abuser then it's gonna be a helluva long wait, I'm afraid :(

Look out with the pregabalin by the way, try to keep from going to the max dose (600mg) for as long as you can. I spent two years at the max dose and it totally effected me in my moods, mentality, intellect and so on. Its also a bitch to get off especially if your taking it for pain. They don't even know how it works properly plus there was some research that I came across ( dont ahve time to find it now) that it stopped the brain from producing new synpases or something.
