^ Sad but true
Very few docs are willing to prescribe owt stronger than codeine/DHC/tramadol on an ongoing basis. Most will prescribe morphine (usually Oramorph) only for very limited periods for acute problems. Anything stronger than that you'll most likely need to see some kinda specialist to be properly assessed. Which can take a while sometimes. Does depend on several factors though so you might be in luck and is certainly worth trying. Docs can be masively overly suspicious of people complaining of ongoing pain and you really need to be a patient patient and keep chipping away at 'em. Take what they offer - even if you know it's not enough - and keep going back if/when it's not working. As mentioned before, maybe pregabalin/gabapentin would be more useful to you than the minor opies as I do believe your pain is nerve-related? Docs are probably more likely to script them too so might be worth a shot, Pagey.
Asking for or expecting strong opiates straight off is probably unlikely to be successful and also get you tagged with the "drugseeker" label which makes it unbelievably hard to get scripted anything no matter how much it's needed. Took me literally years of patiently accepting my deeply unsatisfactory (but admittedly better than nothing... for the week or so that it lasts anyway 8)) script and regular reminders to me GP that it simply wasn't dealing with my pain before gaining enough trust to get a referral. All because I have history of abusing benzos and opiates both prescribed and otherwise. Can see where they're coming from in not trusting me but even so it really is a lot of convincing to get them to believe a word you say once you get that "drugseeker" tag![]()
Is what this thread is for, Pagey. When all else fails whinging is all we have
Is the gel-thing one of those heat pads? Meh. They have their uses. Very handy for kidney pain whilst clucking. Well, better than nowt anyway. Give it a go - might help a bit. But definitely go back to the docs if/when it doesn't. It's persistence that tends to work, I'd say. You need to make it abundantly clear when things aren't helping and not take no for an answer whilst also being open to whatever's offered and also being respectful to the utmost. Is a tightrope walk to say the least but you do get taken seriously eventually. But ain't gonna happen overnight I can promise you
In pain meds news, got given a strip of pregabalin recently. They do seem to help a bit but not all that much really. Make me dizzy as fuck too. And very fuzzy of head the next day. Seem to be great for sleep though - slept like a baby the last few nights. My pain ain't really nerve-related (afaik) though so doesn't do much on that side of things. Maybe boosts the codeine a tad but not enough to notice hardly.
Hey Pagey, sorry to hear it didn't go as planned.
But as Shambles said its a tightrope, my advice is give everything a go. Firstly they won't jump you straight to 'opiates' they will want to see you being open and trying other ways of pain relief, so tick the boxes. Second, you never know it might help!
Keep at and eventually you will get progress.![]()
