Yeah leave it on you dont want any naphta evaporating out of the jar (probably not THAT much of a loss of yield but still good to do). Also I wouldnt worry too much about the consistensy.so when he let the bark and sodium and water sit for an hour leave the lid on?
just a couple minutes is fine if your bark is powdered.
and remember, DO NOT SHAKE once the naptha is in the jar, or you will get an emulsion
