The Big & Dandy HPPD Thread

I don't know if i have hppd or not but after abusing MDMA 2Cx's and LSD i've noticed my depth perception has changed. sometimes it's not that bad and sometimes it's a bitch. everything looks closer than it really is and things look spacey at times. it's caused me to have GAD. anyone else experience anything like this?

Does anyone else feel that their HPPD has some sort of relationship with the headrush that one gets sometimes when they stand up really fast after laying down for a long time?

That's to do with sudden changes in blood and air pressure, abuse of stimulants and empathogens, along with certain other drugs can mess with your blood pressure.

As for visuals associated with it, I don't get visual effects unless I've tripped recently, but if I get a head-rush or a runner's high, or post-orgasm bliss - it's usually accompanied by similar visual distortions to psychedelics now.

I got some HPPD from a big dose of 2cb a while back. Smoking DMT definitely aggravated it, the HPPD would be worse for about day after smoking.

I didn't take 2cb after that and after about three months it went away completely. (I've also just learned to avoid focussing on things that will trigger it.) Strangely, I could still take LSD regularly without it having any effect on my vision. From what I gather my HPPD was solely caused 2cb, so maybe just lay off the 2c's?

Merged :)

HPPD is when the effects remain permanently, not for just a while after taking psychedelics. It's normal for visual effects to remain after your last trip, particularly if you're tripping frequently. They should disappear after a short break - and it's when they don't that it becomes HPPD.

2Cs tend to produce longer lasting lingering visual effects, I find eating healthy and not dosing more than once in a 3+ week period means I never get much in the way of lasting visuals aside from 1-3 days after the trip :)

Wow you seem to be letting something as minute as HPPD really get you down. Of all the disorders and health ailments you could have, it really isn't that serious man. You're acting like you have cancer or multiple sclerosis. Hahaha.

i have consumed almost every drug i have come across in the past 5 years. exceptions being opiates. recently with the use of 25i and 25c nbome i have noticed some HPPD creeping into my psyche. Never overwhelming but i will have flashes of tracers which remind me of LSD or nbome. Is that what people used to call flashbacks? Fuck if i know. As far as i am concerned i can operate and still function at a reasonable capacity while it's happeneing, which is once a week at the most. I've done probably around 500mg of DOC to myself in the last year and a half... next to no HPPD effects. Nbome is a different story. Might just be that i've finally hit that switch, but i can't tell for sure. Something triggered it. The LED lights on the backs of the Buses in my city are euphoric.

As odd as this sounds my first experience with HPPD was caused 100% by smoking weed/hash. It was the only drug I'd ever done at the time but during/after getting really stoned i would have a sort of strobe effect on my peripheral vision where things would just move back and forward in repeating steps until i looked at them at which point it would stop instantly. Most people don't think you can hallucinate from just weed, but if you're new to it smoking huge amounts of high quality bud/hash absolutely can cause these kind of symptoms. And it's not like this went away after i came down, many times i was actually able to make it stop and start when i wanted, but somehow it never really bothered me. After I had been smoking for about a year this went away completely but has since returned along with very mild layers of static on everything. I'm not sure what specifically caused it to come back but in the past year and a half i have done the following: ~40 hits of acid(more than half of which i now realize were DOB or something similar), ~10 grams of JWH-018, one or two stimulant binges, 5-meo-dalt about 5 times, 2c-c once and about a gram of molly and dmt. What I find odd is that after it went away originally i did a good amount of salvia and inhuman amounts of vyvanse, neither or which seemed to aggravate it at all. I would bet my life that it's the research chemicals that caused it, I should probably stay away from them for the rest of my life. I should also note that i did not even notice the static until a friend of mine told me about hppd, so it's hardly debilitating. Now it's only noticeable after smoking but it's still irritating and if I've tripped in the past week or so and smoke then it's pattern visuals very similar to acid. Anyone have any similar experiences?

Took about 400mg of 6-APB in one go I'm 18 around 6ft and pretty healthy, around a month ago few things happening since :

-When I'm reading off a computer screen the words will jilt gently around, not really prominent in the day more when I get into bed and am tired reading my phone.
-When I'm lying down I can feel like my legs moving in motion if you know what I mean ?
-Vision has gotten like grainy
-LED lights will move round when I look at them in the dark, I can focus on them to make it stop though
-If I lose focus on a LED light day or night it will split in too

So wondering if I have HPPD ?

& if I do what should I do, should I stop taking all psychedelics all together

New to this sorry but thanks, Conflict.

25i-NBOMe kicked in HPPD for me (I was tripping 1-2x week for about a month i know bad idea)
i get mad visual static but its easy to look past it or tune it out...also fun to zone into it
synthnoids kick it in harder too...i get tracers in my peripheral at night and in the evening when the sun sets

This sounds like something that can go away, provided you take a break. Unless the NBOMEs trigger it and we aren't aware of it. A lot of people blame 2cs for it so it is possible but never proven. We have the likes of Shulgin to say it doesn't. (He doesn't experience HPPD does he?)

~10 grams of JWH-018

The JWH sounds like a possible cause, that's a fair amount you went through and a lot of people tend to notice weird side effects when they begin to toke the stuff regularly, I'd say especially so after the grass affecting you that way. Regarding the OEVs on grass after tripping, I find it just happens. Wouldn't consider it HPPD (not saying you don't have it by the way) just that your perceptions are changed by taking psychedelic drugs and the likes of cannabis can trigger these perceptions back. Maybe perception isn't the correct word, but I hope you understand. I've noticed similar happen, especially after taking lots of acid for a period, taking a break always helps but it lingers somewhat. I embrace it though. :) Although I can understand it being more of a problem if it happens sober.

Does no one else get visuals sober the odd time to an extent and just put it down to perception change rather than HPPD like me? Carpets/Patterns on the ground always seem to do it for me along with posters. I understand that some people here have a real problem, with things going on much more severe than a bit of movement/breathing. So don't want anyone to think I'm doubting them, just curious.

Shulgin is blind as a bat, and it's quite possible that his long-term use of experimental psychedelics may be responsible for his vision problems.

That's an incredibly large dose. I can't think what about one rather intense experience would cause that, but being a serotonergic it's reasonable to expect that such a large dose depleted the SERT (serotonin transporter) density in your brain. In short that means there's less serotonin active, which can cause various problems.

I don't see low serotonin causing HPPD like symptoms but it's possible, particularly as low serotonin can cause anxiety and anxiety can bring out or worsen these sorts of effects.

To counter-act that you can eat healthy, particularly foods high in tryptophan (chicken and turkey are good if you eat meat, beans of all kinds if you're vegetarian/vegan) as your brain uses it to produce serotonin. Get plenty of exercise, and try to keep a regular sleep pattern.

It might not help, but it's good practice after any sort of serotonergic empathogen anyway. See if that helps at all, and see how you feel in a couple of weeks, if that's not working, post back here and let us know if the symptoms have improved or not.

Other things to try are just removing as many factors of stress as you can from your day to day life, and to try your best to ignore the visual distortions. (though that may seem an impossible task at first, I've seen it work first hand)

Do all of that and come back to us in a week or two to let us know how it's going.

Try not to take any drugs at all in that time. That includes cannabis, alcohol, cigarettes, even caffeine. In some people some or all of those can make the symptoms worse.

Thanks for the advice I know it was a stupid amount it was because 6-APB takes along time to come one (30 mins - 2 even 3 hours) I would not advise this dose to anyone, ever. Since I have been taking lots of vitamin C and 5-HTP I don't plan on taking another drug for the next month or so and at least another 2 months for any sort of stimulant or psychedelic.

You know 6-APB is a psychedelic as well as a serotonin releaser ? The effects are bassically that of MDA, that's why I'm thinking I have HPPD.

Yeah been working on trying to zone out the visuals and the feeling of movement when still, the thing that I really can't ignore is that my vision has gone from great to well not so good. Not saying its totally fucked just gotten worse especially when trying to look at screens or far away writing, hopefully it should improve though. Thanks for the advice again, will check back in a week or so, Conflict.

I'm aware of course, as I have a fair bit of experience with 6-APB, the thing is there aren't really any commonly accepted treatments for psychedelic induced HPPD that work, but there are commonly accepted treatments for problems related to low serotonin, so that's a first step either way.

It might be worth seeing an eye doctor too, just to give you a bit of peace of mind and see if there are any underlying problems your experience might have brought attention to.

Check if there are any deficiencies in your diet, while it wouldn't be the first suspect in this kind of incident, a not-so-good diet combined with the use of these drugs might be related to it.

Just making various suggestions as unfortunately the big problem with HPPD is that a) most of the symptoms presented in HPPD can also be related to many many many other things, and that b) most of the theories as to what could help reduce or cure HPPD are just that, theories.

Time is a wonderful healer though, as is being healthy in general, and I certainly think avoiding other drugs will help.

If it's relevant, I find that after certain phenethylamine psychedelics, of which 6-APB is one, I sometimes get some visual distortions lasting several weeks after my last use, and up to 1-2 months if I took an extreme amount or had also dosed other psychedelics/been taking a lot of other drugs during that period.

For the grainy vision, or visual static as it's sometimes called, Cannabis tends to be a culprit for a lot of people so I'd avoid that until you've reduced it to a comfortable level. Most people have some form of visual static but it often goes unnoticed until it gets bad. I've heard of a few anecdotal cases where where nootropic drugs helped relieve this, though I've not tried this myself and my only relief is through eating healthier, getting plenty of exercise, and avoiding overdoing any drug.

As for the moving text, vitamin supplements seem to help but that might be placebo, when I've had it, it always faded after an absolute maximum of 2 months even if I'd been dosing various things fairly regularly up until that 2 month break though.

First post, been a visitor on here for a long time. I suspect I have HPPD. Used LSD about four times, had one negative experience where I felt confronted with the infinite on/offness of the whole universe, and felt very depressed. Not sad, just weird and negative. As if everything was purposeless. This feeling lingered long after. I only got bothered with the visual type of things after my first and only mushroom experience. I've always had some degree of visual snow, but after the mushrooms, it sort of changed character. There's a sort of blue-ness to everything.. that's probably me thinking too hard about it and worrying about it. The derealization has gotten quite bad in the past month. It peaked one morning into a terrifying panic attack. Since then, I've been on Zoloft which hasn't done much of anything (@ 100mgs now), and I'm seeing a psychotherapist who does holotropic breathwork, so she absolutely understands some of what I'm talking about. We're doing the holotropic breathwork next week.

Has anyone gone through DR/DP, tripped, and felt fine afterwards, or better? I've been doing a lot of psychedelic type reading. My experience is quite similar to what Ann Shulgin experienced in PiHKAL, in the chapter called "Crisis." Except hers only lasted about a week, and mine is still going on, though it's largely not an existential battle any longer, it's being confronted with very negative feelings that sprout out of nowhere. I'm extremely afraid of never being able to trip again. I just cannot give up psychedelics. I want to believe that HPPD is not something that is biological in nature, but something that is mostly psychic, or unconscious. Unresolved inner developments, maybe? I really do not know, but that is what intuition tells me. Myron Stolaroff wrote constantly about the ability of psychedelics to aid in understanding inner dynamics. I want to be able to use a psychedelic and see the nature of my fear and my depression and derealization, to aid in my healing process. Ann Shulgin ended her "crisis" with a 2C-B trip.

My theories on HPPD are that it is either...

1. Conditioning and Stress http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_conditioning

2. Opening or decreasing the efficiency of some sort of visual filter system in the brain.

3. Some sort of mystical thought insertion type of psychedelic god theory

4. Oxidative stress. I say this becuase antioxidants seem to improve my HPPD. Like melatonin, alpha lipoic acid/ Acetyl L-caritine, etc.

5. Closer to what reality truly looks like. (Microwaves, gravity, light spectrums, etc.)

Normally I don't do psychedelics on a work night. But yesterday I enjoyed a moderate dose of psilocybe cubensis. This morning at work I felt ok if not 100%. Without getting too specific about my job I was at work today in a conversation with someone when the silver streaks started in the periphery of my vision. They were silvery lines, shiny, like chrome with the sun glinting off of them and they streaked off and in the corners were prismatic colors. I saw something rotating like a ceiling fan in the corner of my eye causing me to look in that direction for the ceiling fan that wasn't there. I had a mild panic about what was happening but remained calm and finished the task. As far as I know the other person had no idea what was happening to me.

The episode was disconcerting but no harm done. But to those reading this, it's part of what you accept when you trip, especially if you choose to trip often. By often I mean more than once a month.
