Yea I think so too, generally.
It depends on the person who would be sitting. If he or she is as close and honest with you as your best friend is it couldn't hurt to have someone around. But if were to be a person you guess you're "OK" with normally you might encounter trust issues and this social anxiety. Best of all is not too be bothered with the possibility of anxiety because it will manifest itself easily.
There are a lot of basic questions that are too hard to answer for a John Doe because it depends too much on your personality.
I myself have been selfsufficient socially my entire life. Never really need anyone around, though often I think it's cozy and I have enough friends. The first time I used mushrooms was with housemates who were just too playful, teasing me and stuff.
If you can get pretty dependent on other people it might be good to have someone in the neighbourhood just for a secure feeling.
But either a crowded setting or being totally alone can get to you. In general there's an uncomfortable barrier between tripper and sober people, while tripping alone or with other participants can get you into your own world, removed just a bit further from reality which sounds scary but shouldn't be. Just always remember that you're always in control, no matter what elaborate nonsense you construct for yourself to convince you there's nothing you can do about how you feel and what you experience. Take responsibility for what feelings you process.
It can seem hard at first but just enjoy the ride. Remember that you have faith in yourself, the rest should go naturally.
