The Alcohol thread...

@ jakeperson, no it was not intended at you at all but if the shoe fits... :P I hate dislike alcohol but i use it almost daily, if I have no work or other reasons for deflecting me. But that is probably because I have an addictive personality, and if i cant have the things I would rather have, well -OH does it for me.

I do believe it to be a shit drug, but I can buy it locally, fuck myself up, and not get locked up... all in my own home ... good shit pfft. I need to get out more :P

Being drunk can certainly be a bad thing, but it all depends on how you handle it, really. I had quite the binge one time which ended up taking me to Egypt (Alexandria, mostly) with no real notice or consideration as to why. Had a blast of a time, probably would never have gone sober. Unfortunately I had some problems with some Russian mob-types there. But how was I to know those ladies were 'owned'? Managed to get out of the country, so all good.

Awesome pub there though. Probably the only 'real' pub in Alex; The Spitfire. Egypt has the greatest beer, too. It's called Stella, but has nothing to do with Stella Artois. It's the best.

One thing that I have noticed in this thread is how many folk seem to need to mention that they don't drink. If you look at the cigarette thread, there isn't anyone going out of their way to tell us all that they don't smoke. Hmm.

Anyone see what I see, stigma/pretention/social wankery?

Alcohol enjoys many benefits, some of which are influenced by legislation, some of which are not, either way an individuals choice to drink is not something they should be chastisised for, and I do think is worth another shot by most haters.

Or their choice to be a PLURfag =D

You musta been pretty wasted to end up in Egypt, only benzos have that special power to make me do dumb silly things and even then high doses are needed.

There was one person over their recently who did that :p I think a lot of the 'educated' users tend to look down on alcohol because of the amount of people that drink and look down on them for being users so a lot of hate is vented out towards alcohol.

That person is fucking awesome from all accounts ;)

I love that first beer buzz you get after being physically exhausted from working in the garden or playing sport. They should bottle that feeling....oh wait they do. I used to love diving into an esky in the dressing sheds after a game before fucking nutritionists and trainers were employed by clubs and decided to fucking fag it up with lollies and gatorade :(

Shower beers are great too.

I can't remember the last time I had a hangover which might mean I drink more responsibly these days or perhaps I don't mix my drinks as much. I love red wine but find even one glass after I have had any other forms of alcohol is enough to trash my brain the next morning. If I drink red on it's own I seem to be fine. A glass of red and a spliff as the sun sets is one of my favourite pass times.

I rarely drink to excess in front of my work colleagues, which in my profession is hard. The flip side is they don't question my social activities or suspect that I might cane myself on the weekends. For all they know I might be a yoga practising vegan after hours. Alcohol + work in my experience is a recipe for shags in public toilets which is about as classy as it gets.

I'd like to see some information on aldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency in Caucasian populations. Every time I drink I get flushed and feel side effects very easily. :\

From Why can't Chinese Han drink alcohol? Hepatitis B virus infection and the evolution of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency:

THE DISTRIBUTION OF ALDH2 GENES

There are wide ethnic variations in the distribution of the ALDH2*2 allele. This allele is very common amongst Asian persons and appears to be rare for most other populations. Thirty to fifty percent of Orientals, including Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos, Thais, and Vietnamese, are deficient in ALDH2 activity, while a negligible fraction of persons in Africa and Europe are similarly deficient. Further, approximately 40% of South American Indians in Chile and Ecuador are deficient in ALDH2 activity, but only 2–5% of North American and Mexican Indians are deficient in this enzyme. Amongst Chinese ethnic groups, the Han sub-population reveals the highest percentage of ALDH2 deficiency (45% ) as compared to other minority groups (e.g. 30% of Mongolian, 25% of Zhuang, 25% of Mandschu, and a negligible portion of Taiwanese aborigines).

Moderate alcohol-drinking in certain populations, however, can be more beneficial than hazardous. Certain epidemiological studies have indicated that the regular consumption of small amounts of alcohol is associated with lower overall mortality. From the wide geographical variations of ALDH2*2 allele distribution, we speculate that the genetic factors favoring non-alcohol-drinking in certain geographical areas may be associated with liver diseases.

You are a "negligible fraction" ;) (assuming Caucasian Australians have similar rates to Europeans)

I don't think I've met a non-Asian who gets the oriental flush

Naturally a high tolerance drinker. Rarely go out on the piss, usually at the footy or leagues club, so usually once ever 3-4 weeks I get on the piss heavy. Last time I drank, they had $10 jugs of Carlton Draught (favourite beer) at the Leagues Club, so I went through 6 jugs within a 2.5 hour period, drinking straight from the jug.

I rarely go near spirits (they make me more aggressive), wine tastes like crap, and beer generally makes me a happy chap, more laid back and relaxed.

I've had Beez Neez a few times, I like it.

My favourite sort of standard beer that you can find anywhere and get on tap most places is Hahn Superdry, but I'll drink just about any beer. Coronas are also a favourite :)

Even though it's very pricey (around the $60 mark per carton -.- ) its a fuckn nice drop.. brewed here in Frementle, Western Australia aswell :)

Only shit I drink on tap when I'm out is Stella and VB...

As for the Asian beers, Bintang is the only one I've really experianced properly and I'm very impressed considerin its brewed in Jakarta..

I really like Tsingtao and Singah, I know I've tried Chang too but I honestly can't remember it. I try so many different beers that it's hard to remember which is which. I'm drinking Bitburger at the moment which is good, and Henninger has been a staple because it's only $11 a sixy at 1st Choice Liquor.

Had some of my most fun times on alcohol...

Ever since being on buprenorphine I find getting drunk to be absolutely no fun at all. Just makes me very tired/grumpy, gives me a headache and then makes me want to go to sleep. It's a real shame :(

Can usually get away with 1/2 to 3/4 of a drink before feeling like shit so have missed out on trying new beer...I usually don't even bother anymore. Enjoyed pretty much all kinds of beer from little creatures pale ale to coopers best extra stout to beez neez to asian beers. Some of the james squire beers are nice...hop thief and golden ale are two that come to mind.

That sounds like one hell of a deal. Is that a german beer?

Should stop complaining and bite the bullet, jump off the last little bit of bup and start my drinking good times again.

I hate being around drunks when I'm on good mdma...two completely different mind states that don't seem to mix ;)

subutex (bupe only) or suboxone (with nalaxone)? there's plenty of reports of people on suboxone complaining of alcohol not being the same likely because of the nalaxone. it can be used to treat alcoholism. look into it and it may unfold a few things for you.

^ It's naltrexone, the longer-acting opioid antagonist, that they use in alcoholism. Same principle though :)

hahaha its funny you mention the bupe + alcohol (this is not a good idea).. I was catchin up with a mate at a pub in the city after I need to go to the exchange to get some 'supplies' and I shot 4mg after atleast 12 standard drinks (It was all filtered properly).. anyway, all I can say is it's a bad combo :p

I didn't get grumpy or get a head-ache.. but I did get very tired 8) and was like yackin every couple of hours (the bupe. deffenatly was the reason I was vomitting but I did keep drinkin after every spit which wouldn't have helped :\ )

this combo is not recommended....

you drank too much alcohol and obviously shot too much bupe. of course that's not a smart combo. and continued to drink. smart move...

they're both depressants, of course you were tired, probably close to unconsciousness/ODing.
