Thank god they finally buried David Hookes

Hmmmm.
Anywaze, has anyone noticed how the media has constructed the 'Hicks Image' since his death.
Originally dubbed the death of a famous cricket person, it has now progressed onto the death of a great cricketer and further still, The death of Crickets Greatest Larrakin.
Does anyone else find it sad how the media hypes up numerous images of a person before choosing which will be applied as a final image.
This gives me the shits.
(BTW, if this is a little poorly constructed I appologise, damn drugs make for bad grammer. =D)

It would be interesting to see in the next or the next one after that generation and if there will be post called "Thank god they buried Steve Waugh" that our kids/grandkids will be ranting on saying what the fuck he was? and all that media hype?

Maybe it was a big news for our oldies.... :D but not for us. :)

i had no idea who this guy was till he carked it.

Yeah, me too. I unfortunately only have what the media tells me to go by, but my first thought was "That's really sad. I hope this is a good enough excuse for security guards everywhere to get a headcheck."

I thought security guards were only there to keep the peace and remove offenders without having to resort to force unless necessary? Perhaps I'm missing something, but a security guard should not have punched the guy, as opposed to perhaps calling the police, or just restraining him?

Then again, the newspapers and stuff I've read all place a heavy negative stigma on the bouncer, so I've hardly got an unbiased information source :\

Death is death though, and it's a fucking tragedy to see violence :(

I was unfortunately at a meat-market club just 2 nights ago in Perth.

Forgotten how much I hate that scene and I was talked into it by a bunch of friends after a couple of drinks.

Anyway while lining up there was the typical drunken rowdy mob... One guy tried to start a fight with us yada yada yada

But then another guy was by the door who appeared to have been just kicked out. He was getting angry and trying to piss off the door-lady.

"you SLUT!"
"why dont you let me in? SLUUUUUUUT?"
"SLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT"

This goes on for about a minute, the guy isnt letting up and this chick is getting visibly agitated but trying to ignore him.

"SLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT"

Quick as a flash the guy checking ID's. A guy who made me look small (and I am 193cm tall) leaps over picks this guy up by the neck in one hand and swings a mssive hit to his head.

The abuser twists like a rag doll in the air.

One more hit but the guy lets him go at a key moment and I swear this person twists in the air from the force and lands against a shop window, where he stays slumped on the ground for about 5 minutes.

Instantly the bouncer is gone and pushed inside by the other bouncers so I assume he cannot be identified.

Meanwhile there is this expanding pool of blood around this victim's head. He groggily gets up and mumbles.

"you are going to hear from my lawyer"

Don't really know the point of the story but the whole incident reminded me of David Hookes.

I don't want to justify the bouncer's actions, but I have to say that from what has been said, he probabely landed a single punch on Hookes which knocked him to the ground and killed him.

In hindsight, more could have been done by the bouncer to control the situation without throwing a punch, but these guys aren't hired for their quick problem solving skills or their peaceful negotiation skills.

There could have been some pre-existing condition, or just an (un)lucky hit, which put Hookes down. He may well have stepped into a punch directed at someone else.

Regardless, who thinks this dude is going to get a fair trial? He is up for manslaughter, a serious charge (although I'm sure he couldn't spell it), and I would bet the prime minister has his hand up to be first to sit on the stand and slag this dude's character off.

There are so many pissed off people right now. Ever think the world hates you? This dude, if it wasnt for his huge unpronouncable surname and generic beefcake looks, wouldn't be able to set foot outside his door.

You can kill a nurse, kill a nun, kill a cop.. but if you dare kill an Australian sporting icon, you will wish yourself dead!

the amount of coverage of this issue is probably more directly related to the number of people who find it relevant. the fact that david hookes did play cricket at a top level for many years means that anybody with an interest in cricket in the 80's in australia probably knows who he is - i.e. several million people i would suggest. if i would die tomorrow in the same fashion, it would be newsworthy for a much smaller number of people, but probably still make it into the papers - only less regularly.

the other reason it has remained in the news for such an extended period is that people are generally disgusted in the way the man died, and can probably relate to how easily it could happen - most people probably know of story of someone being beaten up. add to that, david hookes was hit by a man who was being paid to be at that pub and have a physical presence.

i think the televising of the service (on t.v. and radio) enabled many people who wanted to be involved in some way in the service to feel involved. not everybody can attend the adelaide oval for the service, but mostly everybody can tune in the radio.

if you're not interested, don't read it - i am interested, but i still managed to skip over the articles that didn't interest me...
