Talk about shuttin the fuck up and not judging how educated somebody is on their opinion here. because both sides of this arguement aint capable of seein eachothers sides and i could easily call YOU uneducated for thinkin the way you do

I am saying it would be better all around if we lay off with the negatvity. first of all it aint even opinion its a feeling from deep inside my gut. its a lil deeper than opinion cuz you can change your opinion but aint no changing this. i hated cops since i was a little kid i always seen them as a bad force. but anyways no i also hate them because of what they do as a whole. not just to me, to other people and people like me, poor people and the young people especially.
Now the reason some people see it as the yes or now life and death no inbetweens situation.
the difference is you see yourself as a druggie so your interests are protecting druggies....youre all about this to liberate drug users so to speak. thats why your picture dont work for everybody. works for druggies who got no other issue with em. cuz otherwise aside from drugs and the bad effect the police can have on somebody whose into that, you aint got beef with the po's. u see them as something to win over by showin that people who are drug users aint all the bad shit they cut out to be.

but it seems like alot of people in the 'be aight with cops' camp cant truly understand where our side is comin from tho. i noticed people who aint seen the bad side seem like they cant take it all into their head fully that there is one. like they admit there is another side but they cant understand the reality of it.
well whatever that just somethin off topic that i was thinkin about this. but anyways, in shit like this believe what yall want. the truth is theres always gonna be the people that the cops are a born enemy. and always gonna be ones that see them as just doin their job, not bad as long as you be smart,etc.
and the truth is there is both of those realities that exist relly. because the ones who born into a really good life aint gonna be in a situation to show them otherwise.
cops to rich white people or rich people or certain kinds of people, "regualar" (read not urban, white) in general - they see you as a fellow man doin something wrong so they give you your ticket or summons or whateva and they just had to call you out cuz its their job.

Could it be that the cops see the groups you mentioned before (poor, blacks, teens) as the same as druggies (against them, etc) and that is fueling the hate?

lacey K - great post, well explained. I think the catch is there are at least three separate arguments being conducted at the same time. The first is, are cops inherently good, bad, or indifferent, which is what people like Mockturtle and AphexAcid are arguing. Then, theres the "if cops are bad, what is the best way to deal with that, open revolt or working within the system" argument, which is what me and you were arguing way, way back. Then, theres the "given cops are bad, is it even useful to debate how to deal with them, or should we be looking at why society feels the need to police us so heavily in the first place" argument. These are all related and are being argued together, and I think thats why there is so much disagreement here.
The real problem is, once again we see both sides of the argument. I don't doubt that cops harass you unfairly - I've lived through a couple of years of that myself. My instant reaction to them is extremely negative, to the point where if I had the opportunity to save one from some gruesome fate, I'd probably walk away and feel good about it. But, much as I have cause to hold this attitude, its essentially self-defeating. The more I say "fuck you cops, you dont control me", the more society says "control the druggies!!!1111Eleven". I just think that every battle we win actually brings us closer to losing the war. Theres an Australian drug dealer who successfully sued the tax department here for lost earnings when the police busted his drug deal. He won in the courts, a decent victory for drug users/dealers. He then promoted himself as the man who beat the system. The public outrage, against him and drug users/dealers in general, was huge, and that particular law has now been changed, to universal public support. He won the battle, but ultimately I think he cost the community of drug users by winning.

Hehe. Sounds like cops are the same the world over. I've been done while walking along the beach, stopped, searched, fucked. Illegal as hell, but their word against mine. I took a beating for that, and it certainly doesnt give me a lot of good will towards cops. But say I turned around and fucked him up... The public would just go "some druggie fucked up a cop, crack down on druggs, omgz law and order!!!1111ONE1!! And they'd probably gives the cops more powers to search anyone they pleased. If we can convince the rest of society we aren't a threat, maybe they won't keep trying to lock us the fuck up.

Hey Lacey K i understand your rant about the cops going after cats basically because they are black in the wrong place or whatever but cops hate "hippies" just as much...lots of cases of people gettin pulled over for a Dead or Phish sticker on there vehicle and getting busted for a few dozen hits of acid or whatever, madatory minuimum of 10 years+++ and many othere shady situations, being a white guy with dreads etc etc etc. Now i am not tryign to say this is worse than your situation, not at all, just saying there are other groups of people the cops are big time bullies too. And don't think I have never been in run in's with cops myself, I have on occasions been asked to step out of vehicles, searched, and pushed against cars ( not too big of a deal) by cops simply because of the way I look. But you know what? It was my own fucking fault. I was wearing a bandada, most cops will associate a bandana with a gang, its hte most logical thing to do for a cop. Thus, you are asked to step out of the car, and when you go to stick your hands in your pockets the cops all up on you pushing you against the car. Sure cops are nosey and shit, it's there fuckin job , but some of these "I was walking down the street and a cop mugged me stories are the biggest bullshit I've read in a while". Cops are around to enforce the law, and that what they will continue doing, and if it means maybe bothering a person or 2 in search of drugs where it might not be as warranted as it usually would be, too fuckin bad. You know yourself half those times you have been doing something illegal or have been on the verge of doing something illegal.
