... I have been searching these paddocks for over 20 years and haven't had any problems with the farmers yet

About 15 years ago a mate and I were berated by a local farmer whilst searching in the Coffs Harbour area. We left (empty handed) promptly. He was rather pissed off and claimed people left rubbish, and frightened the cows.

The next day I was picking north of Grafton and lo and behold along comes another farmer on his tractor. He wasn't so much pissed off as confused to what we were doing. I saw no real reason to lie to him (ready to gauge his reaction) and told him we were picking mushrooms. "They'll kill ya" were his remarks which I debated with him for about 2 minutes. At the end of conversation he just said that next time we wanted to pick we should just ask first and directed me to his homestead.

A few days later we did just that and (I figure) his son answered the door. He was completely cool about the idea which was a relief as, like most country people, he was pretty big (and I used to be on the scrawny side) and along with his dogs, it could have got ugly. We picked some shrooms, anxiety-free and headed on back to Sydney...

We might have been lucky, and times have changed a little but if you run into farmers whilst picking try to be polite, honest and straightforward - country people appreciate it. Be wary though i've been abused for simply driving slowly past farms in the past as well (though i figure the occupants were probably city-slickers).

Although I haven't had any trouble, I try and find paddocks out of site of the farmhouse. I already know the more productive areas so I am not their for long and I go before sun up and wear one of those LED headlamps that the fishermen use. Last thing I need is some passing motorist calling the police on their mobiles (something I didn't have to worry about 20 years ago) so I am always listening for approaching cars

what about setting up patchs. if one were to live on a property with sheep shit and woodchips in abundance. digging depressions in land, watering maybe or would these be futile efforts?

pretty much i am just asking if anyone has tried to "farm" shrooms in particular areas to increase your chances.

People do it all the time over at the shroomery :)

They tend to do it in boxes however...

well anything to improve my chances. without being specific i am actually quite high up on the slope of an area of "hills." i am asuming this is good for shrooms am i right?

lol larger quanities perhaps. luckily alpacas are tidy little critters that like to make "poo piles" so its all in one place. hopefully them will help

what about just buying cow manure lol?

mmm needs more research me thinks. or maybe the opposite it need to be decomposed and broke down into simpler materials. i dont know i am just taking stabs into the dark

I'm talking to a friend right now who knows more about shrooms then I do.

He says cow shit is optimal due to something to do with the way they process it... and he doesn't think sheep shit would work very well. They have been known to grow in kangaroo shit though apparently.

Are mushrooms known to be common/present in your area?

not that i am aware of. only just moved here its a large property plenty of bush land, woodchips (free offer from government hear in w.a), and obviously the fields with the sheep and alpacas. just got to hope for the best i suppose

p.s the sheep and paca shit is more like pellets (like kangeroo shit). much harder than cow dung

personally, i'd say that your attempts to create a stable environment for mushrooms are noble, but slightly futile, face_.
as Mr. Blonde hinted, you'd have a far greater chance of success if P. Cubensis / other hallucinogenic mushrooms (you said you were also going to be scattering chip bark). Observe for instance, Pan Subbs?* -always get these guys mixed up with the Subs and i'm not for brushing up on the spelling, :P though i assure you the two are different species - grow on lawns. They do not grow in all lawns. As too, do Cubensis seem to have a preference for patches. Though i've never found mushrooms growing in feces, only the wood / lawn vareities, its always seemed to me that they like growing in places that look a certain way (well kept is probably the most noteable).
personally, i'd highly recommend that you find the spores yourself, and grow them, then mix the mycelium into the sod that you propose to scatter across your property.
as to alpacca / sheep poo i've no idea, but searching the shroomery may turn up some favourable results, as i know that they have been grown in other forms of fecal matter, but only in controlled environments.

The reason that cow manure works and horse etc doesnt is that cows have 2 stomachs and therefore the grass is more decomposed and more fertile. Thats why if you put horse manure on your garden, the first time it rains you will have a lawn and not a garden due to the undigested grass seeds. You don't have to worry with cow manire. By the way its been a good season, and its still raining today !

yeah it would appear it needs to be more controlled for any sucess. anyway enough land to roam hopefully will have some luck when the season comes. its around feburary onwards till it starts to heat up for perth isnt it? i have searched this thread but been getting mixed results.

this will be first time so might get absolutly nothing lol. need to get some macro images of any i find on shoomery too.

about the half the property is dry sclerophyll forest with plenty of biological activity *currently living a shed away from house surrounded by monitors* so hopefully i will find a few (since they are native) and collect their spores to put in controlled environments.

Has anyone in SE QLD found any? That are actually in SE-QLD, not on the NSW border? Its killing me, every mission a complete failure :(

Id love to go to the border and have a look, but driving 1hr+, going somewhere i have never been, in the middle of the night hoping to find paddocks..feel like it will be in vein :'(
