Flower Sativa vs. Indica vs. Strains - Does it matter?

Personally, I think this whole "strain" thing is totally overblown. I was a total pothead in my younger years and we always had access to a variety of decent hash and weed from the Netherlands and Marocco. None of us ever got the impression that some strains were totally different from others, we only thought that some weed or hash was really strong and other strains were weaker. The effects always seemed quite similar. Just like alcohol, where drinking beer, wine or spirits affects you somewhat differently but in the end all of them are just booze.
 
with modern commercial stuff (like the stuff at the medical dispensary in my state), it really is misleading to call em sativa or indica... 99% of strains are just modern commercial hybrids. dutch and american, boring bag appeal strains. i'm tired of them.

there ARE still pure indicas and pure sativas to be found, and i prefer either of them over hybrids of both. and there's enough variety in landrace/ heirlooms that we can probably discover new types and make new and novel hybrids for many years to come, if the market doesn't cause a FULL saturation of dutch and american commercial crap.

with all that said, anything in the diesel family (typically seem like 50/50 hybrids, but unique) like stardawg and what not... these are right up my alley, and don't tend to give me the bad side effects or boring main fx that most hybrids do.
 
if you buy seeds the indicas are like half the size of the sativas and the sativa leaves are way thinner... i don't get why people say they are all hybreds.
 
i meant to write half the size in height... that has nothing to do with yeild of flower.
 
So, I got a Kolab Strawberry Ice vape cart which is labelled a sativa,
and while I have been enjoying Indica vapes and water soluble drops, I have to say this (Strawberry Ice vape) is more of what I would have liked each time I try it,
and I want to try it more than would be sensible.

with this sativa, I take one or 2 tokes, and in less than10 minutes, I am in my body in a coloured dimension,
something like the transparent Predator movie graphics,
my body feels like it is sparkling and feels like it is tingling, as if I am energized and either about to be invisible or enchanted or star trek transported or something.
I see flashes of opalescent scales on my skin and on everything, the air is prisms or lenses.
the euphoria goes right down to every cell in my body (but I do not actually see cells more like 2 carat diamonds).
Admittedly, I do get this to a much lesser extent on indicas but my eyes get droopy and it is an effort to keep on going.
Whether the whole indica/sativa thing is real or not, I hope the Strawberry Ice strain remains a thing, it truly takes me back to my original love of smoking dope.

That last part about droopy eyes. That to me is the 'strain'.

There are two strains of weed. Both get you high, but one you want to go to sleep the whole time and the other you CAN go to sleep but are more happy just doing whatever.

That's my experience after decades of smoking hundreds/thousands of bags of different weed.
 
Pharmaceutical Chemist here, involved in some research pertaining to this subject. There are around 100 cannabinoids in cannabis and we are still unsure of the actual full library of psychoactive/therapeutic effects exhibited by them, but in our research it is definitely the case that different varieties of cannabis have different ratios of cannabinoids which should indicate a different pharmacological effect. I say should because this is also not a well researched phenomenon and anecdotally a lot of people do not seem to notice such a huge difference in high from strain to strain. I personally tend to think the 'Sativa' and 'Indica' nomenclature is completely obsolete now, it is an incredibly subjective thing...
 
whatever that stawberry ice has (supposed to be sativa) that's the mix I like like Thai stick in days of yore. zinggg!
 
I live in the British Columbia Canada Okanagan region. Well known for weed. My guy gets his from people that have been growing weed for 40 years plus. We have pot shops everywhere, they are fun for the novelty shit like infused joints or disposble vape pens. But for truly amazing pot the black market rules.

Me too ! I was given a strain that is really danky musty hash smelling with pine and wee bit of garlic. It was really lovely..
 
Above all the libeerty to choose matters and right now a so-called "legal" state *MONOPOLY* as Québec's SQdC just perpetuates the good old THC-centric "fidelization" $¢enario with over-billing/over-taxing on top ot it. Anyway, i've checked multiple times the availability of 2:1 from the SQdC and it generally resulted in self-punishment, despite the UN/WHO joint declaration of mid-December, 2017.

IMO this is a graphic plot telling us there's a physical limit to the production of noble molecules genetically encoded, otherwise it would become a blob instead of a plant... THC being the older motivation it's only natural to find a lot more candidate genetics in this region compared to the Full-CBD or even the so-called "balanced" 1:1 that i consider as plain denial of the buzz by a "medical" mafia that still gives "profe$$ional" advise while it's actually former pro-alcohol advocates who run the SQdC. Besides psychiatri$ts once mentioned in the article of Jean-Sébastien Fallu on mad $¢ienti$ts:

Indica seems to be a lot more mellow to me. High THC sativa strains tend to give me a bit of anxiety.
 
Been smoking 20+ years now have never been able to tell any difference between saliva and indicas. I just get stoned and it’s great. Maybe my chemistry is fucked. But any strain for day time any strain for bed time it all just works. Not discounting the different experiences of others just my 2 shillings
 
Well I think if you smoke enough to just get smacked, the strain will hardly matter. There's just potent and not so potent by then. Sativa / Indica is mostly a myth based on the original landrace strains found for each one to have a certain type of high, but I've had strains that are like 90% indica be the most uppity euphoric high I've felt. It has more to do with terpenes in the end I think.
 
A Big Boy tomato hybrid can be selected to the point where you can hardly recognize the Big Boy parentage, even if it is still 90% Big Boy genetics. However, Big Boy hybrids will still often tend to resemble Big Boy parents.

The original breeders very often actually had breeding the Indica high out of their crosses as a goal.

I think that pot has been bred and cross bred even more than tomato plants at this stage of the game with thousands of people tinkering. Things are indeed quite homogenous at this stage. That's a shame, really.

I had some decent regs a month or so ago that made me kind of flash back to good Mexican from high school. I wasn't looking for it or expecting it. It tapped me on the shoulder all by itself. I'm sure that taste was indeed part of it.

Around the late 90's my favorite pot was pressed red, quality, Mexican. It was resinous to the point where the a QP was around 3" diameter and rock hard. One hit was a tiny pinch broken from that. Sativa, of course.

We might be entering an age of American, capitalist, pot. Not all bad, I guess. Good, solid, mass produced, pot lacking character. The Evan Williams of marijuana.

I've tried CBD, CBG, CBC and CBN and they all did about 1/1000th of what THC does in terms of quantitative psychoactivity.

I'm very curious and inquisitive but firmly rooted in camp whatever.

CBG and CBC do seem to have some subtle benefits somatically. CBC is a really smooth vape/smoke.

I think all (or most) of those will lock into receptors in various, partial, ways and thus modify how THC locks into them.
I got some THCA distillate some time ago which I am still working on. It's decent by itself (I put in on some mediocre regs), but if I take CBD oil ahead of it, the high is a lot better.
That CBD oil by itself is barely perceptible.
