Rugby World Cup 2007

Apparently the slur against O Gara - the Irish kicker - printed in LÈquipe last week was that he has a mistress in common with Brian Ashton, weeps during sexual intercourse and never takes off his rugby boots at home.

They also allege he and Stringer have severe gambling issues.

Fucking French media!

Come on Ireland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RESPECT.

Well it was a scrappy game from Ireland. It seemed every time they got the ball they would drop it. Their highlight was the O'driscoll tackle in the first half. That boy can hit!

They were still in the game I thought until that great little French try in the second half. What a well read kick!

Chris White should blow his own head off. What a pedantic fucking ref. Any game he refs never gets any momentum and is rarely open rugby. He was penalising blokes for rucking people out of the way! When that long head pretty boy from France was lying in the back of the Irish mall, one of the Irish lightly stepped over him and was penalised! He should've rolled away! Any ref worth his salt would've let that slide even if he was rucked harder.... I hate that ref.:X

Anyway, I didn't think the French looked anything special.

^ Yeah, Ireland were scrappy & indisciplined. They've been a real disappointment this tournament, never getting into their stride. Attempting to get 4 tries past Argentina is not going to be a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination!

I agree that France didn't look particularly special, but you have to give credit to Michalak's flash of genius to set up that try in the corner - a fantastic piece of skill - & they are building up momentum & showing themselves to be the best of the northern hemisphere sides (which isn't saying much I admit!) & the most likely of those to challenge one of the tri-nations.

It's really beginning to look like a France v New Zealand quarter-final, which I was so hoping was going to be the line-up for the final. It seems a shame to have such a momentous game between the host nation & the overwhelming favourites being played half-way through. :(

It's good to see my dark-horse picks the Pumas doing so well though. Surely the case has now been made for their entry into the Tri-Nations? It would be a huge boost to not only Argentinian rugby, but world rugby as a whole, & the IRB have a real opportunity to put right their fuck-ups of the past few years.

for some reason, it seems to me that the refereeing in 'big' games has been consistently shittier than refereeing in 'not big' games... with the exception of a few (wales v australia), it just feels like whenever established teams are playing, officialdom's influence on the game itself is a horribly negative and closed-up. chopped chimp, you used two words which are so important and i entirely agree: momentum, and open.

Springboks, a battled win against Tonga. I expected them to do better, but theyve still won all games played so far. Im expecting an RSA-NZA final.

^That's what I'm hoping for....although last nights All Black vs Scotland number two has got me a little worried.

The amount of ball the Blacks dropped was shocking. We looked like we were rushing everything and didn't seem like we had ever played as a team before. We didn't look like world champs.... :(

Scotland put up a decent fight but just lacked some key players. Who knows what might have happened if they played their top team....

Hmmm.....I hope Graham Henry told them to play like shit otherwise I smell REAL BIG trouble in the form of France in the quarters.

Australia on the other hand, I thought they put in a decent effort against Fiji.

We don't want to peak too early (or so I'm telling myself).

Very impressed with the fight put up by Samoa and Tonga; wish one of them had managed a win, that would have really made the tournament interesting.

Let's hope Ireland can hammer Argentina, and knock France out.

I was curious as to what your reaction to that performance would be. A really odd game from the All Blacks, I thought. A weird obsession with scoring from the scrum, & as you say, handling errors & rushed decisions all over the shop. Not what I expected from them at all. Thing is, they still hammered them 40-0, so you know, I wouldn't be toooo concerned. ;)

Tonga though?! What a performance! Electrifying stuff from the Pacific islanders, & I was roaring them on to a dramatic upset - one bounce of the ball & it could've been theirs. It was quite a sight seeing Habana, Montgomery, Botha et al, being sent on in a rescue mission. Best game of the tournament so far, no question.

Good to see England finally play some decent rugby, produce some quick ball, & run in some good tries, but they still have a problem in the midfield imo, & Wilkinson's tactical kicking has to improve. But it was a marked improvement from the SA game & salvaged some pride & semblance of a defense of their title.

Scotland-Italy, England-Tonga, & Ireland-Argentina are all effectively knockout games next weekend - it's gonna be awesome! =D

Great....the only game of the tournament I totally miss and it's the best one!! :X There's a call from John Connelly to bring the Pacific Island teams into the Super 14, stat. A great idea I think as they are definitely passionate about their rugby but they just need more experience at the highest levels. I'm gutted I missed that match...

I'm looking forward to all the game's above too. Especially the Irish game. Go Ireland!!!

^^ You're right that they probably won't get kicked out, however there's plenty of other options but they all rely on the Ireland v France game. I've attached this article from the NZ Herald website, arguably the best news website in the WORLD, and definitely the best site for World cup news that I know. (Go NZ Herald!!! :D)

Oh, and Argentina did get the bonus point against Namibia, the article is from Sunday.

It is still no clearer as to who the All Blacks will meet in Cardiff, should they beat a weakened Scotland team at Murrayfield tomorrow morning (NZT), as expected.

There are several permutations and either one of France, Argentina or Ireland could line up in the Welsh capital.

If Argentina takes five points off Namibia in Marseille this morning then:

* Ireland must beat Argentina and score four tries when they play the penultimate pool match in Paris next weekend. They must also prevent the Pumas from finishing within six points of them. If they achieve that, then Ireland will finish with 14 points like Argentina, but they will advance by virtue of their head-to-head result and will most likely face New Zealand.

* If France beats Georgia (September 31) and secures a bonus point, it will finish Pool D on 15 points. If Argentina finishes on 15 points. too, it would claim the pool victory by virtue of their head-to-head result, meaning France would face New Zealand in Cardiff.

If Argentina loses to Ireland, but prevents Ireland securing a bonus point and don't achieve a bonus point themselves, then they could finish second behind France and then face New Zealand at Cardiff.

There are other permutations too, such as all teams finishing on 14 points with each having beaten one of the other two teams.

This means the team with the third-best points differential would be eliminated. At this stage, Ireland are a clear third in that department.

There is also a possibility that neither Argentina nor France will pick up their expected bonus points against Namibia and Georgia respectively, but the smaller teams usually fade the longer the tournament goes on.

The Irish yesterday were not delving too much into the possibilities, other than to acknowledge "it's a big ask".

For what it's worth, having experienced the vibrancy and passion of an 80,000 crowd at St Denis, the All Blacks might prefer meeting them in Cardiff.

Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!
I Reckon The Australia will take it out, they were robbed last time so now there back for whats theirs! =D

^ NZ was robbed in '95, its ours! I think once the ABs get a decent challange theyll pull things together. I think it will be a NZ-RSA final, but you cant underestimate Australia..so maybe NZ-AUS or AUS-RSA

It can't be a NZ - Aus final as they are pretty much pre-destined to meet in the semi finals. If they both win their groups (as they pretty much have, unless dire dire massive upsets against minnow nations occur) then they are drawn to meet in the semis if they win their quarters.

Gives us another chance to let NZ choke on the grand stage again ;) and as Australia are one of the ONLY teams recently to beat NZ, we absolutely have a chance of doing it :) I hope that this semi actually happens, as it will be a cracker of a match.

One more week of pool games, then the real tournament begins - not that I am discounting the fantastic efforts of some of the lesser rugby nations, as development in these areas is critical for the world rugby scene :)

Carn you Australia!!

CB :)

Yeeeeeahhhhhh.....some good stuff from England & a well deserved victory. The decision-making in the midfield was much better, with Wilkinson having a decent game, & it was good to see Farrell score his first try in union too.

Having said that, Australia should roll over them in the q/f's despite missing Larkham, but at least we've saved a few blushes by not being the first defending champions to get knocked out in the group stages, as was looking a very real prospect a couple of weeks ago. I shudder to think of the repercussions, should that have come to pass.

Tonga can hold their heads high. They've had a great World Cup, have mixed it up with the big boys & (barring a Fijian upset against Wales tomorrow) have been the best of the Pacific Islanders. It's been a privilege to watch their passionate, have-a-go play, & the IRB need to pull their finger out & give those teams the step-up in the world game that they deserve.

Still some mouth-watering prospects to come this weekend though. Loving it! %)

On a related note, I had a conversation with an English guy while playing Facebook poker last night about Johnny Wilkinson... he was trying to convince me that lil' Johnny was the best flyhalf the world has ever seen.

I replied that, yes he is a good kicker, but he can't read the play anywhere NEAR as well as Dan Carter or Stephen Larkham... but him being English refused to listen to irrefutable logic.

Will be good to smash the English in the quarters :)

CB :)

NZ v Lions, Second Test, Wellington, 2005.

The motherfucking defence rests. Tell me after watching that game that Dan Carter isn't the greatest person in the universe? :D

I wish Tonga had been drawn in NZ's group, or Australia's. They would have had a real chance of going through ahead of Scotland or Italy; putting 'em in the group of death was unfortunate.

btw, CB I went looking for you on Facebook but somehow found about a gazillion people with your name....I'm on hoptis's friends list if you want to try to find me (or get my real name from my email address in the TPH contact thread...)
