Yeah - what particularly appealed to me is that it's produced by a bacteria. Throw in your (ring substituted) benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde & substrate and brew at around 30C.

I see no reason why one couldn't brew-your-own. I did quite a bit of reading and it's not particularly high technology.

L-PAC is produced on a HUGE scale in India. I PRESUME because ambient temperatures in some parts of that nation are around that 30C.
 
BTW if you just alter the bacteria, you can just as simply produce (ring substituted) 1-phenylpropane-1,2-diol which, as I'm sure you are aware, can simply be rearranged to the (ring substituted) P2P.

Boisynthesis is quite a novel technology for the production of precursors but there are still more possibilities out there.
