Anything not too long in the tooth.

Genre wise, I'd say 'weird' or quirky (or just French).

popular stuff, that's kooky but accessible:
Betty Blue, Amelie, delicatessen

other stuff ... action and classic
eyes without a face, le sammurai, a phrophet (recent 2009/10) .. think Blunstie recommended that one at some point (you should listen to him on this occasion ;) ) ... i saw it at the cinema too. was ace

L'instinct de mort
&
L'ennemi public n°1

the story of Jacques Mesrine, a famous french gangster.

Seconded. French gangster films are the bollocks <3

Speaking of which, the Pusher trilogy are also excellent. In less gangsterish, more quirkyish, FroggyFlick news, am a big fan of Sheitan too. Anything with Vincent Cassel in is generally well worth a watch.

EDIT: Doh! I'm a moron. Pusher films are Danish not French. Still recommending 'em though.

and after watching Goon, anyone looking for a proper hockey movie to watch, should dl the following. both are much much betterer <3

Slapshot

aaaaand ...

The Mighty Ducks .. (I wish Joshua Jackson to be my Benjamin)

The two Mesrine films are what I would call epics, and seriously long. They are good all the way along but wait til you have the time because nothing is rushed!

2 French films that fit the bill:

Delicatessen_Remark849345.jpg

Delicatessen is done by the same director as Amile (also very good if you haven't seen it), and it really shows. It's a very fun film, off beat, weird and quirky. Ne le dis is just an awesome cool story that unravels brilliantly, and also has a really cute dog that looks like a bear in it.

sheitan is well worth a looksee ... different and fairly fast paced too ... vincent cassel is fab in anything he does

Vincent Cassel = coolest Frenchman ever.

^^^ I love Delicatessen, only saw it recently, but I think I prefer:

Already mentioned it in here I think but it fits the bill of French/quirky/good :)

Looks like I got more than I bargained for, lol.

Amelie has been on my list for a while. Just never get 'round to watching.

Thanks everyone for your help. I don't know where to start... <3

you've got a soul, and you'll deffo fall in love with Amelie ... it's fucking hard not to given her character.

Ah for fuck's sake. Nobody said it was a bastard sports film. I fuckin' loathe sports films. Except for Deathrace 2000 and Rollerball. That'll teach me for not reading the reviews before *ahem* purchasing :!8):D

lol, please restore my tattered reputation and watch "Headhunters" or "Ne le dis a personne" instead :)

I didn't read anything about it either tbh, i only knew it was hockey as soon as it started playing

I had such great faith in Blunstie's opinion, I didn't bother 2nd guessing him =D

[edit] fuck me, there's possibly a months worth of mileage left out of this one. loving it =D

orf to bed, nite folks x

That's it. I'm only recommending 10/10 films now :( Have you seen Headhunters Marmz? I loved that film. Really tense, well shot, and erm 'real'.

Those two (and one or two others in this lil flurry of recommendations) do look good actually so I probably will. Bloody Goon has nearly been purchased now so am determined to watch it seeing as purchasing that means I couldn't purchase summat else instead tonight. You said it was a decent film not a decent sports film (and therefore extremely niche by default Mr NoNiche :p) so if I can actually sit through it at all it can't be all that bad. There's been far too much hype to abandon it now :D

I've recommended a few french films in here. Baise Moi, Irreversible and a whole load of other Gaspar Nöe films*, Potiche is excellent too with Gerarde Depardieu.

* Except he's not french, just based in France, and the internet is now spelling his name "Noé" all of a sudden, wtf? I think I've lost my mind, I don't go making a serious effort to get diacritics right in foreign names for them to change overnight.

Va Savior is another good french film.

Indeed. One of my favourite actors.

Brilliant films. Saw them at the Edinburgh Film Festival a few years back, definitely epic.

meh, just watching an ep of Touch before bed (shitey new yank tv with keifer sutherland), to try to get the sight of blood splatters and testosterone fueled violent nonsense out of my head.. :( ...t'was depressing stuff mainly (sorry MSB, I did give it a shot)

I don't mind violence (even spades of it) when it's fantasy shit like Romero, or if it's relevant or intrinsic to making a point in some way (see Cronenberg for best examples of that) ... but Goon doesn't sit in that category for me. Had to look away a few times. brawn wankathons don't do it for me

from the subject matter of the movie, I'd of been more interested in an exploration of the Queubec 'faggot' type teams (ie: proper hockey) vs goonsquads or whatever ...

[edit] I don't like sports movies much either (like shammy) ... any given sunday was alright ... but altho I end up liking a lot of his movies, Oliver Stone flicks tend to try to beat you into submission with a bat to the head in a bid to get you to agree with him

NBK poss makes my top 20 flicks list tho ... even though he totally changed the tarantino script and made it something completely different

[edit] sports movie theme aside, I'd be extremely surprised if Shambles doesn't loathe this, incl the last scene complete with tacky Opera to boot
