Recommend another good movie per post

Pi%20movie%20poster.jpg

Pi! Watched this last night with a friend, and I must say I thought that it was very good. Well written and directed and a bit gritty. I love such well thought out movies :D

Great characters too! I'd definitely recommend it. Has anyone else watched it?

Pi is pretty great, saw it a couple of months back. Was a bit of a headfuck for me at times, was pretty stoned at the time though. Love it though <3

Got quite the backlog of films to watch, might give Frost-Nixon a go tonight.

I've got 650 films on my lovefilm list. :D

Got a bit carried away adding anything which had a decent rating.

Saw this earlier...

Wendy Carroll is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska, in hopes of a summer of lucrative work at the Northwestern Fish cannery and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions, with far-ranging repercussions for herself and Lucy.

A decent film, good to see an independent film from the States, none of this over the top, flashy Hollywood stuff. I reckon tribal_girl would probably like this.

Looks interesting, Spade. I'll keep my eyes peeled for it.

Not so keen on Michelle Williams, mind. But she seems to be building a bit of a credible reputation for herself these days so what the hell. Everyone deserves a second chance.

+1 on Jesus' Son, Samantha Morton is realllly hot hah. Pi is a great film, it feels just like the temporary insanity after doing to much ket, seeing patterns and systems at play in everything. It broke my brain a bit the first time I saw it, I think i am too open to suggestion.

I reccomend King of New York, Christopher Walken is good as a drug lord coming out of prison trying to reclaim the city but Larry Fishburne stole the show as gangster Jimmy Jump in this one for me :D.

P.S. Watchmen is awesome :D

Showing at the cinemas now. As it's an indie film not sure if it's got a nationwide release, was one of the local independent cinemas round here showing it.

King of New York is fuckin' great. Not seen it for a while now but is a top film - may have to reinvestigate that one cos it was a big favourite of mine at the time.

Will also have to check out The Watchmen cos it does look damn fine indeed :)

Watched Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson this morning. Nothing too earth-shattering or unexpected - all been done before mostly - but well worth a watch cos it's got lots of footage of the man himself off his tits on various substances, wearing unfeasibly skimpy shorts a lot - frequently whilst it's snowing - and shooting stuff.

+1 for Gonzo, wasn't an awful lot I hadn't already really seen or heard through other documentaries like you said, but still a good watch nonetheless :) he was quite the character.

if you're obtaining watchmen by dubious means then i'd advise you wait until a good quality copy becomes available :)

king of new york is quality. frank white is one of the best movie gangsters ever

The funniest thing for me about Dr Strangelove is George C Scott. He did each take a number of ways and whichever one he thought was his best got binned by Kubrick who put in what Scott thought was his worst performance each time, supposedly because Kubrick liked the overplayed comedy rather than Scott wanting to do a proper acting job, although Scott always said that it was because Kubrick was a cunt and didn't ever want actors to have their own choice of which version of a scene was in the final cut.:)

Sounds very much like a Kubrick thing to do that, BB. Not the easiest man to work for by all accounts :D

Patcher of Pits: Had to snip that linky cos I doubt the notoriously stroppy Kubrick estate would be best pleased. I can't believe that a supposedly respectable site like that can get away with having it up for long - lawsuits ahead surely :D

Can not condone that gran torino piece of shit... I think you got carried away by an easily-pleased crowd Mr Spade

You didn't think it was totally hilarious? Whether it was supposed to or not it had everyone in stitches.

Defiance - great movie! Its about the Bielski brothers, trying to hide from the nazis during the second world war.. Not my usual sort of film but it honestly is a great movie!:D

OK so after Ismene and others telling me how great Battleship Potemkin was I rented it. Sorry but I juct sould not bare to watch it. I didn't realise it was in black and white and a silent film. Regardless of that it wasn't for me.

Also watch Backbeat which centres around The Beatles gigging in Germany before they were big and the former Bass Player Stuart Sutcliffe who wasn't really interested in being in a band. It was very so so.

Just saw this very decent film...

With HUMAN RESOURCES and TIME OUT, Laurent Cantet established himself as one of French cinema's leading realists and analysts of social discontent. His third feature, an investigation of sex tourism, is perhaps his most challenging. The setting is a beach resort in late-‘70s Haiti, under the dictatorship of Duvalier, where middle-aged North American women go to be sexually pampered by young black men, rewarding them with economic and quasi-maternal favours. Basing their script on three stories by the Haitian writer Dany Laferrière, Cantet and regular co-writer Robin Campillo sensitively but trenchantly look into a complex nexus of sexual and political issues. As the ambivalent, possessive, highly knowing Ellen, Charlotte Rampling rides her current career renaissance with cool, abrasive brilliance.
