Real raves (for clarification in the USA "rave" refers to giant commerical shitfests)

Plenty of warehouse raves in Dalston/Hackney in London. I went to one in the summer where Simian Mobile Disco was playing, I was doing mephedrone in front of security and they didn't seem to care.

If you are looking for underground college type parties in Europe as they are held in the USA you won't find them. Simply because this is Europe, and we do thing differently. I have studied in three European countries, and never once went to a party that could resemble a 'frat' party or whatever those colleges type parties are called. All the American exchange students I met during those periods had the same to add... That in regards to student type stuff....

As for the 'rave' topic, I saw the video you posted in LA and that is why I stated that we in Europe perceive the term rave very differently.

When it comes to EDM, sorry, but the US is light ages behind, mind commercial David Getalife and KilltheMouse type music. At least you guys have Detroit which still produces talent like no other, but other that, that's it. I don't want to sound like an elitist, but the music scene as the on in the posted video, can appeal only to 17-20 year old's in the the state... The chick are HOT though, but, that is it... It is a bunch of kids just having fun with some mdma and commercial music. Once they get of college, that is it... Drugs are bad and become new born Christians :) etc... That scene has no foundation, nothing is real about it... It is the Mc Donalds of EDM...

Go to Panorama Bar in Berlin at 10:00 in the morning on a Sunday. The crowd is 25-40, the music something else, you can feel that you belong, that the scene there has something real... I have had the most amazing discussions with people there, sober, and not.

Have you been to Fabric when the crowd is up for it and not tourists? Have you heard what is arguably the best sound system in the world. I have heard sounds on ket and mdma in Fabric (ok maybe tooo much ket) that are impossible to perceive anywhere else. That is because of the sound system, and the Djs who play unbiased, ground breaking electronic music, be it D&B on a Friday, or house/techno on a Saturday. I still remember a night when Craig Richard was playing the weirdest music ever, but it was something else. You CANNOT have that experience at an open air venue with 10000 thousand people... The sound travels, and it is not intimate. Same thing applies to many other European venues...

You where at Sonar, I remember posting in the thread, go to the OFF Sonar events. I even posted the flyer of the club... Mdma was everywhere.... Riklet I remeber posted the same thing. Some people are just bad at getting drugs sometime or unlucky.

One could argue that this a general cultural difference in how we perceive 'music culture' and 'culture' generally compared to Americans.

Am i rambling to much?

Am i rambling to much?

Yes, just a bit.

This is a case of "each to their own". Some ground breaking electronic music is utter shite and in the same way not all commercial music is shite.

I rather try and fire in about the girls in the video felix posted, than some unwashed bearded hippy chick............"but its all about the music!" - crap its all about enjoying yourself

But you do get the picture ? :)

i agree with most of it.

Although clubbing in Berlin? Really bad. Severe lack of good drugs and lots of people just there to be seen.

In Tresor I saw people drinking coffee! WTF is a Techno club selling cups of coffee for.

If you rarely drink coffee, having some after a heavy night on the pills/speed can actually bring you back up a bit if your stomach doesn't play up.

Yeah I am constantly changing my mind about Berliners... Sometimes I hate them, sometime I understand them, after my last trip I met a lot of nicer people, so... If I could I would go and live there for 6 months to get the full picture and then make up my mind... I prefer Barcelona, though, for many reasons, but Berlin is Berlin...

I don't want to generalise because it wouldn't be fair, but most of the Americans I've met seem to have a completely different idea of what a rave is or should be, when I brought some to parties around London, be it massive psytrance events at SE1 or dodgy squat raves in Hackney, they never seemed to appreciate the athmosphere, saying that it was too dirty and full of the wrong people, I mean even Fabric or Turnmills weren't commercial enough for them.

It seems a lot of Americans think a rave should be packed with 17-20 year olds, well dressed and trendy waving glowsticks around high on some overpriced pills they bought with mommy's weekly allowance, while some top commmercial shite dj like Tiesto is playing.

I always laughed when yanks said Tiesto was the ultimate rave act, lol yeah right...

Would have been seeing them tonight at xoyo (new one on old street) but my mates flown out to italy to see the missus so looks like i'll have to wait until next week for a big un

That US rave looks like hell, if you wat that just hit the trance tent at global, i'm sure there are plenty of multi roomers around the uk that would give a reasonably similar experience too, you just need to look. So far as i know i don't know anyone who likes trance but it still seems to be massive, although the same can be said for U2.

^ Yes I have but no longer live in London... Where you at last years birthday, the 10th... It was something else... Especially Ricardo, he played 3 hours in the morning, 3 in the afternoon and 5-6 in the evening (b2b with Craig Richards for about 2 hours though)... Musically the best night of my life... They even had wii and a rodeo during the afternoon. I actually thought that I had imagined that, but saw pictures days later :)

It's all about a good nights sleep and head to fabric early Sunday morning. I can't deal with a Saturday night fabric crowed anymore, far too set in my ways for all that nonsense.

As for raves/events in Europe, I went to trance energy last year and loved it. Worth also checking out awakenings, timewarp and love techno.

This years frenchtek was a fail because of scene politics but check out last years:
