Rank most sedative drugs as sleep aids

IME, Seroquel, Trazadone, and Clonidine (sic?) are all great for "knocking you out". The 1st two should be taken 45 mins before you wish to fall asleep and Clonidine should be taken just 10 mins before sleep. HOWEVER, all 3 drugs give a rather nasty hang-over, leaving me lethargic for hours after waking up, that is why I would recommend Klonopin (clonazepam) and/or Ambien (zolpidem)
Clonazepam taken 1 hour before you wish to fall asleep is very effective, and there is little to no hang-over or other side effects. Zolpidem taken 5 minutes before sleep is also very effective and also has no side effects (at least for me, there are many reports of sleep walking, driving and eating while on Zolpidem so watch out)
Note: both clonazepam and zolpidem are addictive and have a high abuse liability

Seroquel will make you sleep. It's like it rockets you into 10 hours of stage 4 sleep. Only tried once.

But I usually dose 25-50mg diphenhydramine if I want to think I will be unable to obtain ~6 hours of sleep. Usually for work.

I know a friend with sleepwalking problems on zolpidem, and eating, then sleeping.

Zyprexa and Seroquel are at best 3rd line sleep aids, so If (you don't have a medical history of drug abuse) and you've already tried :

1. Z-Drugs. These are the new first line sleeping drugs. Zolpidiem, Zolpiclone, etc. (Ambien, Lunesta...)
2. Benzodiazapines. (as myself and someone else mentioned Tamazepam is at the highest end of this scale. If you are only on valium or clonzapam right now, try going to a more effective benzo.
3. Chloral Hydrate. This is old, and has some abuse liability but few side effects, is extremely effective, and has almost no long term side effects.
4. Barbituates. high abuse liability, but work well and don't have long term side effects.
5. Anti-cholrigenics/ Alergy pills. Benadryl, Hydroxizine (that should probably be at like #2 since it works well and has no dependence liability) Meclazine, Cyclizine, Dihydramine, etc.
6. and then if nothing else worked : Zyprexa or Seroquel which are atypical antispychotics an aren't really indicated for sleep although they do work well for it because psychiatrits have been convinced by EliLilly and Co. that they can be used off-label which was the subject of huge lawsuit regarding olanzapine a couple of years ago, so if you are currently receiving olanzapine for sleep (and not manic bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia or sundry other psychiatric conditions more sever than typical depression or anxiety) then your psychiatrist is doing something wrong.

The logic of prescribing Seroquel or Zyprexa, which have serious long-term side effects (not to piss off anyone that HAS to take them for the conditions they were designed for) is the same as prescribing someone an Opiate or barbituates(including alcohol) or that shit they use in anesthesia for sleep. they all have side effects (dependence and abuse, and some long-term effects as well) and were NOT designed for sleep, it is a side-effect.

Tricyclic antidepressants gave me the deepest, most instant sleep of my life. After that, I'd say:

1. Anti-psychotics (Risperdal, Seroquel, etc.)
2. Anti-histamines (diphenhydramine, dimenhydrinate, doccylamine)
3. Nitrous oxide
4. Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium)
5. Alcohol

Just my experience/opinion.

atarax..aka hydroxyzine pamoate 25-50mg works great for inducing a nice, deep sleep..

Does anyone know the approx most sedating dose of mirtazepine before the NRI starts to make it harder to get to sleep?

How do u think mirtazepine compars with sedation to antihistamines/antipsychotics?

I don't have any experience with the antipsychotics but in my experience:

1. Trazadone, I hardly ever use it because it knocks me out even in small doses and I sleep for at least 12 hours on it. Makes me lethargic feeling for hours after I wake up, good on RARE occasions.

2. Ambien, Lunesta, These two are probably my favorite, I enjoy Ambien more but Lunesta seems to work better.

3. Clonazepam, I'm tolerant and dependent on it these days so I have to take it but it's great for sleep if you're not dependent on it... there will be no sleep if you don't take it and are dependent on it.

4. Benadryl, Doxylamine, ..... Doxylamine being the better of the two in my opinion but both work, just can't take them every night.

I usually switch back and forth between Ambien, Lunesta, Benadryl, and Doxylamine...I always take Klonopin before I go to sleep anyway. Too Many Drugs!!!

fast acting barbitiurates(secobarbital, pentobarbital), temazepam, Seroquel, and doxylamine i'd say were the strongest.

I'd rank triazolam, nitrazepam, midazolam and flunitrazepam above Seroquel and doxylamine.

Nimetazepam, brotizolam, flutoprazepam, lormetazepam, and loprazolam - even though I haven't tried these, I'd also bet they would rank above Seroquel and doxylamine

Of course, we can't forget about methaqualone either.

Seroquel has knocked me out harder than any benzo, but thats all it does(it doesn't get me high).

and of course we couldn't forget about methaqualone if it was 1965, even though i have used them and have a connection i wouldn't take them for sleep.

You have a connection to methaqualone?

It's available legally by prescription in about only 5-7 countries in the whole world.

Doxylamine is weak. Even the weakest benzo is better than that.

Trazodone is my favorite, fwiw, but the sleep quality can be kind of weird (strange dreams, some degree of morning hangover). Works like a charm though.

^^ This.

i'd say doxylamine is stronger than a weak benzo like quazepam, some studies have shown it to be more sedating than phenobarbital.

Have you tried quazepam?

Quazepam is weird benzo. Weird in that it is highly selective to the alpha 1 subunit of the GABA(A) receptor. It's not weak, it's actually a sedating benzo but it's not very lipid soluble and so it slow to act. I wouldn't rank doxylamine over quazepam.

quazepam fucking sucks imo, i didn't feel fucked up or any euphoria from it. i'd easily rank it as the weakest and least recreational benzo out there.

and i think doxylamine is a stronger hypnotic than quazepam.
