Rank most sedative drugs as sleep aids

quazepam fucking sucks imo, i didn't feel fucked up or any euphoria from it. i'd easily rank it as the weakest and least recreational benzo out there.

and i think doxylamine is a stronger hypnotic than quazepam.

Quazepam selectively targets the GABA(A) type1 receptors which are responsible for inducing sleep. It's an highly effective hypnotic for mild to moderate insomnia.

But I guess everyone reacts differently to drugs.

for me.... marijuana has always been the best sleep aid.... i had sleeping problems all my childhood growing up until i started smoking bud. and once i started smoking it i didnt have a sleeless night for years (i smoked at least 3 times a day)now that i have an addiction to opiates i need opiates(+herb) to fall asleep.
But in general, if you dont have an addiciton to anything, i would say that the most effective sleep aids are
1)Herbijuana
2) percocets, oxy, roxi, heroin (most opiates except suboxone, which makes me feel like i'm gonna have a hear attack)
3) benzos like valium, kilonopin, or xanax
4)Mirtazapine is an insansely sedating drug. i can literally take a chip off of 15 mg pill and that shit will put me out (well it used to anyway) MY brother will lick it and it will help him sleep. When i was younger i wanted to stop smoking pot but i couldnt sleep so my doctor put me on remeron and when i would take the whole pill i would lay in bed falling in and out of these extremely weird and vivid hallucinations

Trazodone is my favorite, fwiw, but the sleep quality can be kind of weird (strange dreams, some degree of morning hangover). Works like a charm though.

^^ This.

Trazadone and seroquel are strange drugs for me. when i start taking them for the first couple of nights they keep me wide awake. But after about 3 days of taking them (seroquel especially) i can't keep my eyes open after taking them.

when i first got put on seroquel it was perscribed as a sleep aid. but i went straight back to my doc and told him that it kept me awake and actually cleared my head a lot and that i stayed up in bed all night writing and playing music. so then he told me to start taking it during the day and to take a kilonopin at night to sleep.... well, when i started taking it during the day i would be at work and be passed out with my face on the keyboard.

Zyprexa and Seroquel are at best 3rd line sleep aids, so If (you don't have a medical history of drug abuse) and you've already tried :

1. Z-Drugs. These are the new first line sleeping drugs. Zolpidiem, Zolpiclone, etc. (Ambien, Lunesta...)
2. Benzodiazapines. (as myself and someone else mentioned Tamazepam is at the highest end of this scale. If you are only on valium or clonzapam right now, try going to a more effective benzo.
3. Chloral Hydrate. This is old, and has some abuse liability but few side effects, is extremely effective, and has almost no long term side effects.
4. Barbituates. high abuse liability, but work well and don't have long term side effects.
5. Anti-cholrigenics/ Alergy pills. Benadryl, Hydroxizine (that should probably be at like #2 since it works well and has no dependence liability) Meclazine, Cyclizine, Dihydramine, etc.
6. and then if nothing else worked : Zyprexa or Seroquel which are atypical antispychotics an aren't really indicated for sleep although they do work well for it because psychiatrits have been convinced by EliLilly and Co. that they can be used off-label which was the subject of huge lawsuit regarding olanzapine a couple of years ago, so if you are currently receiving olanzapine for sleep (and not manic bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia or sundry other psychiatric conditions more sever than typical depression or anxiety) then your psychiatrist is doing something wrong.

The logic of prescribing Seroquel or Zyprexa, which have serious long-term side effects (not to piss off anyone that HAS to take them for the conditions they were designed for) is the same as prescribing someone an Opiate or barbituates(including alcohol) or that shit they use in anesthesia for sleep. they all have side effects (dependence and abuse, and some long-term effects as well) and were NOT designed for sleep, it is a side-effect.

well i only had been diagnoses with depression/anxiety & basically got it precribed t help with insomnia/anxiety.
I only went through a single packet anyway & havn't bothered yet to get any more of the repeats. Because I'm concerned about the long term side effects & it made me eat like twie as much.
Might look more into the tetracyclic antidepressants.
I concerned about building a tolerance if I take GABAgic drugs like "Z drugs"

Does anyone know a good sedating dose for Mirtazepine.
I know that high doses make it less sedating because of the NRI

3. Chloral Hydrate.

I was amazed that nobody thought of this one before, it's quite dangerous but it WILL take you out.
Other than that, Amitriptyline, that shit took me out for a little over 48 hours. I never took it a second time.
Any other atypical antipsychotic will do the job too, specially Seroquel as everybody says.

When I took it I started with 15mgs. and went up to 30, but I never found it especially sedating.
As I said before, if you want sedation, try Amitriptyline.

The most sedative drugs are probably some obscure chemicals/drugs in a CIA lab or something like that.

took 80mg of temazepam last night & it barely did anything

a yr ao i usd o havea mild addiction to benzos. vals, xanax included.
i hope the tolerance isnt permant.

I can get a better sedation from the otc promethazine at 75mg which is stats the dose to take 25-75mg.

i go a script for zyprexa too (olanzapine) which i can get whenever i want & 10mg is prob more sedating but still suffer insomnia. (max reccomended dose is 30mg)

I think i got more sedated from seroquel

im on seroquel. well, prescribed it but dont take it anymore. cause i hate the way it makes me feel and it makes me sleep way too long. ive been on zyprexa and Symbyax. helped me sleep, but most people do gain weight on it. ive heard something about diabetes being linked to that drug as well. trazodone works for awhile, but i grew a tolerance to it fast and it stopped working. plus, i get cotton mouth [BAD] and a migraine in the morning after taking it. ambien works for me great. lunesta not so much.

ive recently been taking benadryl everynight for sleep. its been working for me. benzos - xanax makes me sleep, but im addicted to xanax, so i stay away from it now. or...im trying to stay away from it.

from what i've tried heres essentially what i find the most effective

1) barbs
phenobarbital

2) benzos
loprazolam
flunitrazepam
lormetazepam etc etc

3) anti-psychotics
loxapine
cyamemazine

4) carbamates
carisprodol
meprobamate

5) Z-drugs
zolpidem
zopiclone

6) anti-histamines
alimenazine
doxylamine
promethazine etc etc

i got scripted zyprexa which i think is ok. (antipychotics get a bad wrap, they're actually alright meds for insomnia)

ive only had sample packs of seroquel & am consitering asking to try it out again justto see if its better than zyprexa....

so u rekon zyprexa is better? (i'll stick with this one if its the case)

dont want horrible side effects.

For me it depends partially on what I need to do the next day..
Generally during the week when I have to be mentally functioning (physics grad student) early in the morning I use benzos, they don't leave me as hungover or dull in the morning.

Things like Trazadone, Mirtazaipine, even just regular antihistamines to some extent work great for sedating me but the mornings after can range from just fine to feeling like my brain was run over by a truck..

Lunesta (S-zopiclone) worked ok for me but needed relatively high dosages 6mg, max recommended by docs is 3mg. I never had luck with Ambien (Zolpidem) it didn't keep me asleep long enough.

If I had to rank them i'd go with:
0. Alcohol (not recommended, high dosage = major sedation = horrible sleep = not healthy on multiple counts)
1. Temazepam +Clonazepam
2. Lunesta
3. Mirtazipine
4. Trazadone
5. OTC anti-histamines
