Argh, I'm really sorry about that, fingers crossed for you mate. Do you mean that your natural bone is degrading? I really hope the metals are staying where they should, too. Sorry, that sounds kind of pathetic but I hope things are as OK as they can be.

yeah, the metal on metal hips shed metal ions around the joint, especially in active people...these metal ions attack the bone and degrade it, my x-rays were shockoing huge black areas around the joint, and dark grey bone going right into the pelvis, would need a bone graft as well as new hips if it is as suspected by the consultant....the very black areas may already be near enough necrotic according to the consultant....

One of the implants has shifted slightly too, which is causing me pain and restriction...and the ions will already be in by bloodstream...the tests have gone off to ascertain what level of these (probably carcinogenic) ions are already flying round my bloodstream and depositing themselves in me vital organs....

Not good, not at all, been in tears most of the morning :(

I think I would be too, given the circumstances. Can't be fun, especially as it seems to be down to their choice of hip replacement rather than any fault of yours.

Fingers crossed there are no problems on the blood test front.

When will you get your blood test results? Can't see that the joints are fit for purpose if they degrade that quickly, sounds ridiculous as well as horrible. Stay strong man, sending you much PLUR for what it's worth. <3

can't be fun given that the hips I got twoyears ago were only 2 years after a fucking brutal "revolutionary" op I'd had two years previous whichn involved dislocating my hips, sawing through the femur, and rechiselling/sanding my hip joints, before pinning the severed femur back together...supposedly to give me another 10-20 years before I'd need any new hips at all...just caused me huge pain and even more limited mobility then before the op...

I know there are elevated ions in my blood, the consultant knew it looking at the xrays, big black clouds round my joints...she seems to think things will move quite quickly once they've confirmed their suspicions...

At leats my sexy hip scars will be even sexier having been cut open 3 times in 4 years :)

Having a valium and a Westons and going down the allotment to sit in the sun and contemplate my misery for the afternoon I think %)

Are you a special case, or are they recalling these revolutionary hips up and down the country?

At least you didn't get those dodgy breast implants too eh.

What more can you do at this stage? Here's hoping the worries fade once the valium and the sunshine hit you.

Though I must say I'm pretty jealous, having two more hours in which to sit indoors then another hour-plus before I can even attempt to enjoy the sun. Which will be well on its way to dipping down beneath the horizon by then, but I suppose that's life.

No there are quite a few of us apparently...they developed these metal on metal hips particularly for younger active people, supposedly they had much less chance of dislocation, and would be harder wearing, longer lasting, and give us more mobility...

It's mostly males under 50..

Consultant told me today most of them have been showing probs after 4-5 years, but again, the more active a person, the more quickly the metal is deteriorating...should have an expected lifes[pan of 20 years or so...2 years is a pisstake...

The thing is, implants don't have to go through any clinical trials like drugs do before they are approved for use, it's bizarre...so these hips are basicaly untested, we (the peope=le who've had these implants) were basically guinea pigs...DePuy have been aware of problems with these implants for a few years, problems were being widely reported in 2008-2009, yet mine were fitted in 2010......

gaaargggghh, could go on all day about this shit..

Thanks for your concern everyone, really, <3

no, don't need the doddgy breast implants Albion, once you hit 40 you just develop moobs of your own ;)

Pretty brutal irony, eh?

I know one or both of my knees will need treatment in the near future, because they keep dislocating, but for the moment it's denial all the way. Probably not the best approach.

Arrived in Cambodia at the international airport. My very legit taxi driver offers me weed, mushies, opium, mdma, girls and guns after 2 mins. By 5 minutes he's inviting me to the beach with his family tomorrow. One hour later I'm in a bar and getting chatted up by the bar maid, 30mins later I randomly bump into a mate. I might just like this city a whole lot more than I did last time as I hated it here, stayed in wrong part of time and didn't give it a chance.

That all sounds pretty plausible, until that is you get to the part about you having a mate. Then we just know you're making it up. ;)

Cambodia was the favourite for my mates who did a tour round that area (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand) - they did a lot of trekking around and said it was just amazing. Have you got anything specific planned while you are there? Other than drugs and girls? ;)

I'm so sorry to read this Mr Monkey and sad for what you have in front of you <3 you're a strong bloke though, you'll get through it. This is also happening to my cousin and it's really hitting home now, he's got really depressed :( They made all those promises to him as well and now this. Makes me fucking :X

I've heard mention of a compensation scheme - though appreciate its cold comfort right now. Do you know about this?

Your cousin has same hip issues? How old is he?How long have his hips lasted?

Yeah, I'm not interested in suing the hospital, I think they have actually acted in good faith at the time they made their recomendations, but I'm thinking of registering in one of many class action lawsuits being brought against DePuy/Finsbury and other makers of these hips, who ALL exploited legal loopholes to get their hips to market without clinical trials....

I just want good hips, but now the next replacements I have will have to be fitted onto grafted bone, as itlooks like the ones I've been given have already damaged my pelvis and femur so badly that some of them will have to be removed...i was told today I should have good expectations for my new hips (should I need them), but it's hard to believe when each of the last operations I've had have come with great hopes from the surgeons concerned...

EDIT>>>>oh yeah, takes FOUR fucking WEEKS for them to get my blood results back, only testing for cobalt and chromium levels, nothing else... :(

Yes, I think its a group he's registered with to take action on the hip manufacturers, the name DePuy rings a bell, hence why I think he's having similar problems to you.

He's 50 this year and has had the hips for 7-8 years but they have been causing him major problems for the last 2-3 years. He thinks metals leaching out of them has been the cause of his mental health issues too. Which to be honest is what the family are really concerned about right now - though we appreciate these parts have got to come out, think there are complications regarding why they've not been replaced yet, the stress of the whole situation is a downward spiral. He's not as physically active as you - office / desk worker.

Hopefully I've not made you feel any worse than you already are honey <3 Will ask my cousin for more details.

Wonder how atm got on at his first day at the new school <3
