I remember I was working in Oldham when the Lydon thing happened, with the most backward set of colleagues I've ever had the pleasure to be around.

They were absolutely fucking incensed about it. I couldn't believe it - where were they in 1977? I dread to think how they'd have reacted back then.

Best of all, nearly everybody used similar terms of abuse in reference to Lydon. Trying to explain the irony would have been a waste of time.
