i agree with samadhi -- the pen i've been using for letter writing is a nice silver bullet Parker pen.

I am slightly obsessive over my pens.. I can't use 'gel' pens, they have to be ball-point and usually medium sized. The finer points scratch too much for my liking.
Pilot Precise V5 are bomb, they don't have any click-ey shit attached to them, and the ink and point are nice.

Hah, nice try.i think PenIsland.com has some good pens there
plus, you can use them to squirt ink in the eye of a villain before making good your escape!i recently started using fountain pens and let me tell you... they changed my life completely.
...
fountain pens do not require lots of work and do not make a mess as much as people believe.

I'll second (third, fourth) the recommendation for Pilot Precise V5. I like the retractable version, but I'm having trouble finding them lately. Did they get discontinued?
For erasable pens, there's nothing better than the Pilot FriXion pens. HUGE improvement over the old school erasable pens that never really erased, and left smudgy marks everywhere.
