To have a certain level of emotional intelligence? To be on your own successfully?

Those are pretty important, from the perspective of one such as myself.

Adult is one of those ambiguous terms people throw around. I think those sort of terms end up causing most people turmoil because of the confusion the term can cause. I straight up say fuck those sort of terms, its rarely even used for good, mainly just a way to put people down or confuse them.

Yes! One of my biggest critiques of contemporary society is the lack of clear coming of age ceremony, and the lack of expectations for behavioral change in young adults v. adolescents. Have you heard some of my complaints about UCSD* when I visit sibling there? Student run bookstore with profanity in window, people dressed like miscreants or in somethe dumbass uniform of a so called "sub-culture."Back in my old uni, full of rich people and Jews, there was literally ONE person who owned a skateboard, and two or three people with shock hair colors. People were serious...maybe "formal" would be more accurate. I miss the place sometimes. I don't even want to think about friends who went to UCSC with their naked run or whatever on the first rain of the year, I would have a conniption. Educational institutions no longer take seriously their obligation to mold youth into outstanding citizens. Blah blah lack of civic education blah blah rant rant yada yada.

*OMG, I should find their ridiculous article about things you need to know about e-cigs (part of their campus ban on tobacco, unregulated nicotine delivery systems, herbal blends). Hurm, not sure where it is. Here's an article about their policy, they paraphrased this one thing, which was one of the most reasonable things the student-authored article I was looking for stated, "[e-cigarettes] may be may be just as harmful, if not more harmful, than [analog cigarettes]." Other stuff included "big tobacco companies involved in e-cig business, ergo e-cigs are EVIL" and that sorta thing.

Of course those are important and the markings of an advanced human but an adult? Who knows when the terminology is so ambiguous.

I don't think I've heard you talk much about this "sibling" you have, though I do find it funny you refer to a member of your family as "sibling", makes it sound more sub human. Do you not like this "sibling" or is it for anonymity? I know what you mean though, we've really lost sight on how to grow flailing children into to smooth adults. The only youth doin' it right are the ones intelligent enough to see what's right and what's wrong.. ..

I have a younger sister (was my younger brother until she turned like 17 or so? Don't remember exactly). She is not interested in our illegal business, she's a crazy-hard-working over-achiever. I usually don't mention any relative by gender or role/official relative status, generally preferring "folks" when talking about parents/grandparents with whom most of my intra-family interaction takes place. Though I get specific when I use "my father's wife" and "son of my father's wife" rather than the traditional terms for those persons who are supposedly related to me.

I see, a bit out of the ordinary but each his moan and that sort of shit. My sister is the same I haven't talked to her in years but I have a feeling she still hasn't even gotten drunk, it sucks though as she's one of those people who seems psychedelically minded. Like she just has such intelligent thoughts that are the kind you would link up while tripping.

All this movie talk is making want to put some on. I can't wait for the next few days. I wish things would've gotten what I need to get, but oh well. Guess I'll have to watch the storm with a bottle of 151 rum and some pregabalin!

Also, a neurotic fear of losing control, as developed by the addiction-narrative of contemporary folklore, leaves many unwilling to experiment with mind altering substances. Whereas we might weave a narrative where psychoactive use ≅ control, and addiction is merely a perversion of this.

how is the overall music scene in asheville?

It's great... there's live music somewhere every single night, lots of free shows too. Lots of psychedelic funk.

I love the music scene in Ashville but most of all the people are cool as hell. My ex-boss had a house in Black Mountain and I used to go fairly often. It is very Appalachian but it has a hippy vibe that reminded my of my old SF peeps. I would love to go again. Also the natural scenery is aces. Lots of outdoor stuff to do and plenty of beautiful vistas to admire.

The people are fucking awesome. I love this place, that's why I moved here. It's pretty ideal.

Regarding siblings etc. I had somehow made the assumption that we were all either only children or youngest. I am the youngest in my family, having an older sister and brother. Both semi-crazy which has been good but closest to each other. I have a mother too

fav movies of 2013? I saw so few...I watch a good deal of film, but most of it not too contemporary. I only went to the theater once...to see "Gravity" on a whim. Bollocks. I guess to be expected starring Bollock herself and Clooney, but when Cuaron is on he is on....and on he was not. Beautiful imagery and cinematography, but stupid story with some ham fisted emotional manipulation. bah. The Michael Cera cactus film was better than I expected...quite funny and awkward, and it captures the Latin American hipster subset so well...it was written and directed by real life Latinos ya know? It is worth watching.

Edit- the newest Carlos Reygados was great..."post tenebras lux"....mighta been 2012 though... But he is always great...Japon, silent light, etc...all stellar

"The Violinist's Thumb" is a fascinating and hilarious book on the human genome that is a must read. Written by Sam Kean, same guy who wrote "The Disappearing Spoon", which is far and above the best book on the cultural and scientific history of the periodic table of the elements. Also a must read. Smart young guy with a fantastic wit.

I just finished watching Blackfish. Extremely powerful and upsetting. I knew it would make me weep. Fucking humans.

On a more positive note, if humans have been responsible for so much cruelty and darkness, surely then we can reverse-engineer this mess and make something pure again. I hope so...

hm, odd.... i've found many working ROMs of it over the years. i personally play it on my Wii, though.... its available as downloadable content, for $8 i believe.

Nice I've listened to all of those bands. I've chilled with Gifts From Enola. Working on doing T-shirts for The American Dollar.
The Samuel Jackson 5 really fell off with their most recent album, I can't stand the lyrics. I just recently sat outside of a club to listen to Caspian play, luckily enough they're loud enough that I could hear the entire thing from outside lol. Evpatoria Report is good, very very Mogwai-ish. Pelican reminds me of the Fall time of 2006, and lots of Robitussin. Do Make Say Think is just flat out one of my favorite bands of all time.
I could go on with telling you how I feel about each band you listed. Very solid post-rock list. Sweek is fucking awesome. As is Saxon Shore. But then so are all the other bands you listed lol.

I have two siblings (and we often refer to each other as siblings, we're super close). I am the oldest, I have a little sister who is 27 and a little brother who is 23. My little brother is my best friend, I was old enough that I was fully conscious when he was born and I always had this idea that I was responsible for raising him too, and I wanted to teach him everything I know (and I did). We chilled from the day he was born, he would hang out with me and my 10/11 year old friends and I when he was 3, and converse with us, and teach my best friend new words.

I find Blackfish to be a little one-sided. Sure people shouldn't use Orcas for entertainment purposes but what really makes me mad is the all around hive mind. One person gets offended by the documentary and that rubs off on other people and suddenly everyone is pissed at Sea World. Like really people are JUST NOW realizing that Sea World has captivated animals inside of its walls?!
And also Sea World does lots of good for aquatic life as far as saving animals and nursing them back to health and releasing them when they are ready.

i've chilled with Gifts from Enola as well, very cool guys. i also chilled with The American Dollar (got stoned with them, ate Papa John's, and watched The Tracey Fragments).... John from The American Dollar is facebook friends with me, we comment on each other's stuff haha.

from my list, i've also met If These Trees Could Talk and briefly met The Appleseed Cast. my friend Dave's band opened for Appleseed.... then during Appleseed's set both of Chris' guitars broke strings, and they ended up having to finish out their set with Dave's guitar.

most of that album doesn't have vocals.... the first of the three vocals songs is pretty bad, but the other two vocal tracks are awesome imo. "Tremulous Silence" and "Ten Crept In" are the two good vocal tracks.... both of them are up there with my favorite stuff by them.

Yeah, I agree. Flavour-of-the-month. The documentary is one-sided and emotionally VERY manipulative. The ephemeral nature of western outrage is shallow to the point of being non-existent and nothing really changes, significantly at least.. But for me, this sort of issue is always going to be incredibly emotional and I am absolutely against exploitation of anything and anyone for money. I have basically no iron-clad morality and no use for it, but I do everything I can to not be a fucking cunt like so many humans are. I probably fail, but I am against cruelty to animals and exploitation of their innocence. It was one-sided but SeaWorld didn't really try and become involved in this project.

Its a worry, the prevailing cynicism and nihilism of attitudes towards modern western idealism, when peoples sense of outrage is enough to make other people mad- I have found myself to be pretty let down by modern protest movements and their manipulative shallowness- as an example the Kony 2012 meme.

See, no-one would have a problem with that. That's a good activity to undertake, but it doesn't detract from the cruelty of keeping large animals in small concrete pools.

SeaWorld are an extremely unethical organisation, and I think it would be a positive for animals and human culture if they ceased existence. We are just not meant to be treating fellow inhabitants of earth this way.

Yeah if you were graced by dem amber gels! Still the most LSD I've ever seen and probably will. The dealer, a crazy MF'er who would just walk around with this bookbag selling gels to people all day. Anyways when I was grabbing a half sheet from him he unzipped the smaller front compartment he had at least fifteen sheets of these amber gels. Apparently he knew the distributor of these gels so he decided to head back to OH to sell them. Seriously though, it was an awesome time, summer of love for me. I was just getting into RC's, ordered my first grams of 2c-E and I, joined BL, and haven't looked back since. Really though, who wouldn't shit their pants over $4-6 hits and $400-600 sheets of 150+uh hits?!?

I suppose knowing someone will die and you not doing your best to save them would be worse in a guilt sense than having them die. Some people are just unstoppable trains run of the tracks heading straight away into a metal wall. They'll take you down with you if your not careful, but if I cared fir the person I still can't imagine doing everything willfully possible to stop them even if it meant me getting hurt in the process.
