^It's good weather for a hike, might take a walk down to the bayou tonight if I get the time. It's nice this time of year, global warming has made it so I can go out in a t-shirt most days :|

I feel this way a lot at this time of year. The cultural overload gets overwhelming IMO. (Buy!Buy!Buy!) Even if you choose not to participate in Consumermas, the fact that the whole world seems to be in a frenzy of traffic and upping their personal debt has a way of seeping in at my edges. My tonic for apathy is always nature.:)

popular/secular Christmas music gets me real agitated when I'm shopping or whetever

antidotes:

Veni,veni, Emmanuel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRi1GDoaQu4
Puer netus in Bethlehem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaroIcQ-cnM

More exotically,

a Christmas hymn in Arabic. Ancient; before Muhammad and after, but still before the total dominance of Islam in Arabic speaking countries, there was, of course, a large Christian community, an empire in fact (Byzantium) ... something few people think of ...

... and a lot more ...

I am going to try to drag my largely secular family to Midnight Mass in the Traditional Latin form. Which would be what my stepmom & dad grew up, although my dad's upbringing was more or less secular (while my stepmom's was fairly strictly Catholic) ... would be totally foreign to my mom, of course, who grew up in an secular-humanist-denominational-mainstream-Protestant household and is now a Buddhist. Also, I need to get my ass to confession, stat.

Hey SKL, after seeing your reference to Fillmore West 3-1-69 a few posts back, I decided to burn that show to a couple discs for my mom as a Christmas present (she's a Deadhead). :)

Me too, I think it's sublime; although it has a somewhat monophysitic character (if you ever want to get your mind blown by some really far out and abstruse and yet very essential theology just jump in to Wiki there and start clicking around ;)) which is characteristic of the Oriental Churches, although modern theological rapprochement has helped us understand that some of these controversies are different ways of expressing the same very abstract thoughts (particularly regarding the filioque controversy, one of the major divisions between Eastern Orthodox and Latin Catholics, some of the differences stem from the paucity of human words to express the divine and particularly the incarnational; a difficulty we also have in interconfessional discussion about the Eucharist.) A lot characteristics of Eastern Christianity, it's greater affinity for the abstract, mystical, and experiential aspects of the Divine, none of which, of course, are absent in the Latin Church, but are expressed in a different way. Fortunately there has been more dialogue but in particular more Western theological discovery of Eastern thought in this century, following the teaching of Pope St John Paul II that the Church "breathes with two lungs," East and West.

3/1/69 should be a very enjoyable, and durably so, experience for any Deadhead. Particularly those who grew up in a much more analog era where it was all about tape-trading, many of those early shows (which show some songs, like the Cryptical sequence and Dark Star, which became greatly revered by fans but were more and more seldom played into the 80's, other songs in that show 3/1/69 are more obscure, but it's all a great deal of fun and ends on a triumphant, euphoric, even orgasmic kind of note.) Their musical repertoire was of course a lot smaller in that era so there is less musical diversity from show to show, although that picks up very quickly in the early 70's, a prolific era for Hunter and Garcia in particular in songwriting but the whole band in more or less organic creation of songs which would, and still do, evolve over time (the The Other One in the particular style of a Cryptical sequence became a lot more common with latter-day incarnations of the Dead, for instance, first as a 60's throwback, but then took on new life and a distinct style of it's own, as did Dark Star and even The Eleven, which, despite being one of my favorite tunes especially as paired with St Stephen, especially as in this show in particular, was hardly only a few times after the mid 70s, is more often played, often at Phil-oriented shows, but again, in a distinct 21st century style.) 3/1/69 I would certainly consider and the Filmore Acoustic set in October 1970, and several of the Europe '72 shows along with October '74 Winterland and a few others, among the absolute essentials of the earlier (pre-1977) Dead. It should fit handily, I think, onto two discs. I'm sure it will be appreciated. If she hasn't heard it before, which is really actually quite possible if she hasn't listened to a lot of Dead online, it will blow her mind :)

Never got into the Dead or any jam band really. I need a certain atmosphere. Hence metal, ambient, classic doom, post rock, etc. Favorite band is always the Beatles though.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas people's. We've s great bunch here :) I'm lucky to have a lot of intrests but so many are more interesting high. :\

I really dislike Christmas. Entails seeing family that are completely opposiite to me, lots of awkwardness and judgement. Still, its once a year and there is always aherm drugs. :D

Ditto.

Her Dead exposure was mostly live concerts, but she didn't start seeing them until at least the mid 70s, I think. She's not internet savvy enough to use something like BitTorrent, so she's not part of the online file sharing scene, and this will definitely be something new for her. I'm excited to see her reaction.

The most awkward part for me is having to fake gratitude for garbage presents. "Wow, an old-fashioned mechanical alarm clock! I hated waking up to the music library on my phone. Now I get to wake up to the sound of a fire alarm ringing in my face!" (<--- That was an actual gift I received once.)

Looks pretty cool, what are you going to have in there?

I cannit wait for tomorrow's feast, merry christmas in advance everyone. :)

3meo is back in my head, and I couldn't be more appreciative of it. I look forward to the coming days and years in which it is utilized as a tool in both therapeutic and creative capacities. It is a multi-tool, I call it. When it becomes integrated, elegantly, into the fabric of one's life, the full spectrum of its potential begins to awaken. After so many cycles, I like to think I have become intimately entangled with its powers, and the experience compounds on itself. I remember years ago, when I was using it while editing my 45-minute music video 'Serendipity' (available on archive.org and vimeo.com), I saw the first glimpses of its potential to streamline creative processes, and its ability to see beyond the box. As psychospiritual and creative technologies continue to evolve and unify, from a mess of chaos into a divine manifestation of order, I see 3meo as an integral and formidable tool for the ages.

Lol I know that feeling. Not to be an ungrateful prick but sometimes I would rather get no presents that something I dont need. Makes me feel like my family doesnt know me. But hey, it's the intention that counts I guess.

Ive been saying I dont want presents for years. Give the $$$ to people who need it. Cleaning up after family xmad eve. So much food leftover. So many people starving. What is the fucking point of this bullshit holliday?

I saw rogue one, a star wars story (or whatever its called) last night. Best star wars movie for sure. Really cheered me up seeing people sacrifice for the greater good. Fuck why cant I go out from an AT AT lazer blast while fucking over the Empire.

Well, I'm old enough that I don't get "presents" anymore -- but I give as much as I can and more than I should! hehehe (accidentally bounced my rent check because of it) all the same, might I suggest that the season's about being grateful for the blessings we've been given, and how might we better serve our brothers and sisters. I love you all. Peace be with everyone.

"Our end-of-year holidays are about giving the meaningful people in our lives gifts that express what we often have difficulty saying. I love you. I'm proud of you. I respect you. I recognize your pain and stress. And we can do that in more ways than simply spending." -Paco Underhill, 2009

And check out Merry Axemas!

Oh yeah: in other news: I scored a bunch of golden aces of spades, said to be 100mg MDMA & 65mg MDA -- my girlfriend and I plan on enjoying one for the New Year. Our first MDMA experience!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

I'd like to share a view of holiday warmth and spirit:
