I wonder if it's just part of getting older but I can't go a long with the left anymore. They've gone too far out into left field for me and everything about them turns me off these days which is sad because a lot of the things they promote would work if they weren't constantly segregating their base. They give off the vibe that they pretty much hate everything I am (white, straight, working class, pro-gun, states rights) and just constantly attack on those points to rile up the rest of their base. You speak out against it and they call you racist and shout you down but at the end of the day I'm poorer than the ones they're giving the social benefits to.
The right has gotten far out there too, no one wants to meet in the middle anymore. Everyone just wants to play identity politics.
Personally I dropped out. I'm content to sit on my farm and give them the finger. I slave away just enough to pay the taxes on my stuff and that's the extent of my involvement with the Government these days. They've alienated a large portion of their base and it's going to hurt them in the coming election. My state voted for Obama the first time around but has swung hard to the right just because they've been so hateful towards the people that live here. Don't really matter who gets in imho, we're too divided now and we're going to have major civil unrest and likely a war within my life time.
I do feel for the left though, y'all got screwed. The people wanted Bernie and they aren't going to get him (at least that half of the country did). Hillary should be sitting in prison right now, if any one of us did half of what she's done they would have locked us up a long time ago.
Voting won't change the situation, I've accepted this. The system is rigged against us and the rich will just keep getting richer.
For all the good giving more power to the federal Government did it really hurt the country imo. We'd be better off if we could just Govern the states how we saw fit (excluding things like slavery of course). That way if you don't like it where you live you can just move to a place that suits you better. What works in one state isn't always the best for another, for example the politics of California aren't going to work in the deep south outside of a major city. It just goes against the needs of the people that live in the backwoods. I'm sure someone in LA or San Fran would be content with no one having rifles where someone like me needs them for both food and defense of my property (I'm 20-30 minutes away from any help). It goes the other way too though, I can understand imposing limits on the use of rifles inside of city limits and such where you have a faster response time and more houses clustered together. I can fire 30-06 rounds all day in about any direction with no worries about it going through anyone that I'm not aiming at.
There isn't an easy answer for these sorts of things. Sadly, no one wants to work together and compromise anymore.
