Also, Cyanoide: from what I've gleaned from various forums, you really, really need genuine lab conditions and lab training to use a true microgram scale because everything matters: miniscule fluctuations in air pressure, temperature etc. I think a 0.1-0.01mg scale ought to suffice.

sub-milligram scales are ridiculous to use. I don't mean a regular 0.0000 g lab balance; two decimals down the line. There was one in the department I was working in. I didn't have anyone show me how to use it and eventually I was just like 'fuck this; 0.1mg accuracy is going to have to suffice' and went back to the regular balance and used the best number I could get. Using a microgram scale is so complex. I don't see why anyone here would need one. Even if you were into LSD powder just use a milligram scale and liquid dilution.

I've been absolutely miserable lately. Another year older and I feel 10 years older than my roommates; who aren't exactly friendly. The connotations of the word 'wanker' comes to mind. Simply modern douchebags.

Found out on my birthday that two cats that are dear to me got dropped off because they had fleas and were infesting the house on an epidemic proportion, biting all the human inhabitants as well, especially the children. I understand they had to go, but it saddens me especially that the one; which was 10 years old, declawed and in no shape to hunt or defend herself is at the mercy of the elements. They got dropped off in a rich suburban area; I'm just hoping to god they stayed near the houses and someone is caring for them somehow. I really hope they didn't go into the woods.

They couldn't be dropped off at the humane society because of the cost of the flea infestation. They have to be dropped off as 'lost', otherwise the owner has to pay a huge bill, hence the reason for dropping them off in a suburban area. I only found out long after the fact so I had no say in the deal. I am miserably depressed over it along with all the other shit.

And it's finals.. yay...

it sounds like your family is fucking terrible at looking after / living alongside the mini-tigers hahaha

they might be picked up by some better carers, or failing that they might end up doing far better in the wild anyway ... most processed pet food people feed their animals is garbage and mostly carbohydrates and filler, but this is a general problem in modern society even with humans

i put a whole fish in the cat's bowl yesterday, and when i checked it a few minutes later the head of the fish was GONE i really didn't see that coming

Okay so I've been brushing up on my chemistry today. I could remember pretty much nothing an hour ago, but been watching a few videos about naming, and decided to try and draw some drugs from their names.

First attempt:

These were pretty easy though I had to look up what amines looked like as I couldn't remember.

Then I tried MDA and MDMA:

Much harder, and I kind of cheated. This part is what confused me: "(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)" - I knew what a benzyl group looked like, I assumed the [1,3] was referring to the oxygen molecules being on the 1st and 3rd carbons, the whole ol-5-yl bit confused me though, isn't ol usually signified by an "-OH" group? And the rest was filled in by memory of how the molecules look.

(PS yes I'm a chemistry noob :D)

Hehe, systematic nomenclature for heterocyclic compounds is tricky. "Benzo" means here, that a benzene ring is fused to another ring, the "[d]" tells you, over which bond that connection is made ("a" would be the O-C bond to the methylene group between the oxygens, "b" the next C-O bond; i think you get how it's meant).
"Dioxol" is a five membered ring with two oxygens and three carbons, "1,3" tells you that one carbon is between the oxygens. "-ol" is used for five membered heterocyclics too (pyrrole for example).
When that backbone is named, you start counting at the oxygen at the bottom and number the atoms clockwise (so that the oxygens have the smallest numbers; plus the carbon atom that is part of both rings is left out, for it hasn't a hydrogen that could be substituted for something else). So you end up with 5-yl :)

^ If that was the case we wouldn't have the B&D scale thread since a good number of the posts, including the topic starter itself feature links to buy scales. Same goes for price discussion, we won't allow you to discuss drug prices as this leads to sourcing etc but if someone goes "Damn gas has gone up $1" or "I just got Terence McKenna's Food of the Gods for just $2!!" that doesn't exactly fall under the same thing.

Obviously there are other things we don't allow other than just drug vendors - e.g. sites that link to those vendors, but unless I've missed the memo and we've been very lenient enforcing the rules - stuff like scales etc are okay to link, as long as the site in question doesn't sell any RCs/illegal drugs etc.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong :D

Also, thanks a ton sn23, I'm still a little confused though, probably because I'm really tired. This is the bit that confused me:

"Dioxol" is a five membered ring with two oxygens and three carbons, "1,3" tells you that one carbon is between the oxygens.

Where does the 3 come from? I can understand the 1. Maybe it's the way you worded it, or maybe my tiredness (and general fail at chemistry ;))?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I haven't touched a chemistry book since 3 years ago, and even then I was only 16, so I'm more than a little rusty.

19 is old for a Jesus given the life expectancy is 33 ;)

Yeah I'm one of the younger people here, I'll take the fact you thought I was older as a compliment :D, or you insinuating I'm a boring old fart. :p

I think it's your wisdom and knowledge of chems that makes you seem older. (8

any of yall crackas ever try demerol/meperidine/pethidine?
it actually looks like an opiate i might like.

Ahhh, the end of the semester. Now for my favorite part: voicing all of my complaints anonymously through course evaluations. :D

It's my favorite part because I get to bitch about how the whole subject has been hijacked by wannabe mathematicians and half-assed "theoreticians" who publish a bunch of crap in esoteric journals that only 5 people in the world could actually even read or understand.

Goddamn mathfags killing my beautiful art form. I would probably be ostracized for even referring to chemistry as an art form, rather than the SUPER SRS SCIENCE that all of these "scientists" use to masturbate their egos. These people are a fucking joke, honestly... and I can't wait until I graduate and get the hell away from them.

i am so tempted to bump the thought loops thread for uncontrollé laughs

Man, sounds like you need to be at a different school
