I'm glad this thread has been resurrected, hopefully it will take some of the heat away from the Paul van Dyk reports in Meetups and Parties.
I think trance is the most involving and emotional genre of electronica. I honestly can't see how someone can say, with a straight face, that a 4/4 kick or a tuneless 303 line can conjour up the same reponse in the listener as crisp melodies, sweeping strings and even the much criticised builds that prog.trance is renowned for.

Now look what you've done..you've gone and got me started on trance.
Trance is like TV. Leaves no room for interpretation, gives it all to you on a platter and says "Here feel uplifted..you have no other choice" and thats why i dont like it.
Its TOO emotional and nostalgic for my liking...the good quality stuff i can live with but after a while it grates on me. You can only build up so many times before it just gets boring.
My opinion anyway... rip my arguement to shreds...i wont get pissed

I'm always constantly amazed with this topic of conversation, which I'm sure we have all had before at some time or other, that no-one ever mentions my first love which is INDUSTRIAL. It was only after I started to listen to other electronic music that I realised that a lot of industrial is as much dance music as anything else. It has some of the fattest deepest darkest twistiest basslines I have ever heard.
I suppose it's not everyone's cup of tea but it always saddens me that what I consider to be the best dance music is rarely considered that and never played out

eemmm, music, sweet music...
...Deep house, french house, garage, break-beats, hip hop (starting to luv it!), and we shall not forget ~Drum'n'Bass~!
i also like tekno, tek house, psy...
A wise man once said: "Good music is GOOD MUSIC! fuck labeling them!"
Respect to the beatS!

...and that's why i fly on my own now! No one to impress, depress, out best or digest.

Prometheus = trance nazi
wink.gif

i like trance too, but at times i feel like it's too much a deliberate attempt to manipulate my emotions. if it's good trance, it works. but sometimes i just don't need that sort of stimulation. and it always leaves me listening rather than dancing.
for dancing, techno is where it's at
smile.gif

i like heaps of other stuff as well, electronic and otherwise. broad taste.

DQ:
Prometheus = trance nazi
and this is helpful to the topic how exactly?
I feel no need to justify myself but damnit my music is extremly personal to me and I can't stand people without the same perception of music I have criticising (implicitly or explicitly) my tastes.
I like all types of music, that's ALL types kids. The fact of the matter is though that at the moment all I listen to is trance/progressive because this is the genre of music that I'm digging the most at this time.
Dr rico yi: I can understand you point however quality trance Dj's tend not to overdo it on the builds. I think the problem is more that there is a lack of quality trance Dj's rather than that trance in general is saturated with elements regarded as cheese. The depth of trance around & about is actually quite impressive and not just limited to the proverbial upliftling build. As Slinky-esque types albums would have you believe.

Wow sifu_elver nice to hear someone else gets into industrial ... I downloaded some stabbing westward, not very dancey but reminded me of NIN. Maybe you would also enjoy Prick (not making fun in any way, Prick is very good- Trent Reznor sings some backing vocals on it). Personally I more like Front Line Assembly and Funker Vogt.

HOUSE!!!
deep, dark, tribal, techy, progressive, funky HOUSE!!!
there's nothing better than dancing to any sort of house (well, except the cheesy vocal 'sexy' house but even the occasional track thrown in can be ok)
it's such a shame that the crowd at kinkidisco at home in Sydney sucks so badly cause the music there would be great to dance to.
progressive trance (a la Dave Seaman) is awesome too...as long as it doesn't get *too* cheesy (and by cheesy I mean a lack of deep bass sounds and too much melody)
techno is ok but it gets so monotonous sometimes.

i like Hardhouse/NRG and im not ashamed to say it!
however, im not a purist.
Teriyaki has been my most frequented nite for the past 1 yr.
i also like abit of D&B, only certain types, for eg, Dillinja.
and trance is the first genre i listened to which started all this.
in my late teens, i was into trip hop (sneaker pimps etc.). still love it.
