First of all let me start by saying that I am in chronic pain from moderate foot problems (pain transfers to knees, hips, back, etc.) so I am often in some sort of pain. I had been "treating" my pain and subsequent depression with marijuana and occasional drinking. Before I ever tried opiates I was aware of the addictive potential.
So the first time I tried an opiate it was 2 percocets and I took them before smoking weed. I felt fantastic, incredibly mellow and relaxed, and the sharp pains I always felt suddenly melted away. It was practically a religous experience for me to experience a dulled sensation of pain. I was probably about 18 years old during this first experience. I didn't have any real connects nor was I actively searching for them, I just kept this opiate experience in the back of my mind for a few months.
It wasn't very long before I realized that there was a legal plant available online that was absolutely fascinating to me, it was kratom. I started treating my pain with kratom tea, once a day, never more. It was incredibly short lasting for an opiate, most effects were over after about 3 hours. I steadily increased my dose as tolerance took hold and was beginning to realize that I could only keep dosing daily and feeling "good" by upping my dosage.
I was intelligent enough to realize that I can't keep upping my dosage indefinitely (and drinking a more bitter tea everytime I upped the dose helped to curb my usage) so I took a different approach and would take a day off every now and then. These days off were my first taste of withdrawal and it was extremely beningn. I experienced perhaps the slightest depression but I think it was more mental than physical. I used kratom in this manner for a number of months. Kratom addiction was so mild that I didn't have to bring any with me on trips, I went to a 3 or 4 day festival and forgot all about kratom while there.
It was at this festival that on the final day I came across opium (the real deal!!). I smoked it almost immediatly after getting home and was greeted by a sweet flowery smoke and a calming sedating euphoria. I combined it with kratom and enjoyed it very much. This was the turning point in my addiction. I had been aware of ornamental poppy pods and a way of making a crude tea, but living at home with my parents I felt no need to order poppies for fear that they might be aware of what I was doing.
Well, long story short I eventually ordered a box of poppies. I don't know why I was so reckless with this particular flower but I suspect that pain clouds my judgement and increases the pull that these drugs might have on someone. The poppies were much different from kratom, the euphoria seemed a little dulled but the relaxation was way up there and the effects were precisely what I was looking for. Poppy pod tea tasted a lot better than kratom did to me and the effects were about 3x longer (no exaggeration). I never looked back and made poppies my new drug of choice.
Poppy pods were not nearly as safe as kratom was. I was dependent before I even knew what was happening. The first time I ran out of poppies (probably 1.5 weeks after ordering the first time) I experienced considerable withdrawals for the first time. In a panic, I ordered more poppy pods and reinforced my addiction. Since that time, I have been using poppy pods fairly regularly for about 8 months I guess. I have had 2 or 3 major withdrawal periods (week clean or longer) and countless smaller withdrawal periods to mantain my tolerance. I have had some really good times since discovering this flower, but have also suffered more than I could've imagined. I have been riding a roller coaster up and down for months now.
I guess in conclusion, even though I knew the dangers and how to avoid addiction I simply didn't want to control my usage because the percieved benefits were far greater than any negative I could imagine.
