Olympics - Beijing 2008

Oh that's a great link. So far America only has one. That must be the fencing girl, she won gold yesterday. That was such an exiting thing to see. Specially the little 18 year old who got bronze, she was a little ruff cookie, my goodness lol

RPG

Gymnastics starts tonight. Just saw a commercial. GREAT!!! And they're showing swimming again. So my evening is planned.

RPG

Diving was awesome! So proud of China, glad they maintained their gold and proud of Germany for grabbing the bronze!

You know I'm watching the Olympics on High Def for the first time and it's amazing. What a major difference. Everything is so clear. And even the athletes are far away i still can see them, way clearer than regular TV. so that's an added treat.

RPG

I'm not getting enough coverage here. Randomly on NBC or CNBC/MSNBC/whatever I catch an event or two, but I wish I could watch much, much more.
The events schedule I found on the internet does not jive with what is actually playing on my TV. Thats another problem. :\

Bloody horse racing..

Horse, women's 400 free final, men's 4x100m free final and GB v Pakistan hockey (mens)

No gymnastics here

Am I the only one who finds it hard to get pumped up about the olympics? Really.

But the whole deal with how China is trying to present a particular image, etc., etc., is very politically/sociologically/whatever interesting. Apparently they are putting up false walls to hide dilapidated storefronts, moving undesireables out of Beijing into the countryside, attempting to build machines to CONTROL THE FUCKING RAIN and so on and so forth.

Interesting. Do you have a source for this?

Its going to be a close run thing in the medal count but I won't be surprised if China gets up...

Does the US have anyone good at say: table tennis or badminton?

The US will give the Chinese a run for their money in the Gymnastics, but I think the Chinese will get more medals there...

THe Chinese have been pumping squillions of dollars into pretty much EVERY sport so they expect to dominate... but yeah, it will be close.

CB :)

did the thread have a direction in the first place? its a general Olympics discussion.

Here I'll keep it on topic -

The reason bodybuilding isn't in the Olympics is because there is no objective measure of winner vs. loser in Bodybuilding. The entire sport is about aesthetics. You can just look at the history of the Mr. Olympia and see that as times change, judging changes, expectations change, etc. It isn't a sport based on a best time or a highest weigh lifted or one team out playing another it is based entirely upon personal opinion of a person's physique.

And to say that Bodybuilding is not a sport when things like Curling are considered sports is asinine.

Bodybuilding is one of the most difficult sports there is. PERIOD. Most successful bodybuilders take 10 or more years to reach their prime. This is 10 years of daily training, knowing every capacity of your body, micromanaging your rest, diet, hydration, etc. Then once at the their peak they have to maintain that for a few more years and improve on their weak points. This is all while fighting off nagging injuries and pushing their body to the limit on a day to day basis in order to achieve the desired result. Then there is the cutting and pre-contest prep work, posing and developing a routine, etc. etc.

It is an extremely demanding sport and just because you may not personally enjoy it doesn't mean it isn't a sport.

Bodybuilding may be difficult but there's no way the Olympic committee is going to consider it a sport any time soon. Why not have a beauty contest too?

Just because the Olympic Committee wouldn't have it as a competitive event doesn't mean its not a sport.

If your point is that Bodybuilding shouldn't (and won't be) in the Olympics then I completely agree with you. But it IS a sport.

And shit the same arguments you make about Bodybuilding apply to Synchronized swimming and diving and a number of other sports. Determining a winner on something aesthetic is completely subjective and it makes it extremely questionable whether it should be in the games.
