I'm sorry I may need to go down stairs and dig out my microscope to view those pathetic excuses for blooms. More petal less spiky foliage please good sir. As for killing the country.. harden the fuck up Australialis, this is the New World Order and it ain't waiting for no one.

What is gardening other than natural sculpture? Otherwise you would just sit there and scatter mulch and let the plants run wild? We are not barbarians!!

I could write an essay on the subject but why waste my time.

Fuck you and fuck the world you want your kids to live in. Buy a kaleidoscope; it's the most you'll get out of life.

I really don't see what is so offensive about a sculptured hedge or an flower arrangement on a massive scale?

What about Bonsai or Ikebana? Both of those disciplines are practiced on Australian natives and various international/introduced plants.

Each of the pictures Busty has posted over the last page are beautiful and inspiring to look at. The same goes for LP's pics, they are great to look at. I just don't see why things have to get so negative about flowers and gardens

I'm not being a dick either, please enlighten me about the facts of this debate. I can appreciate that there is an impact from some particular introduced fauna that has been provoked to grow uncontrolled in the wild but I can't see thats the problem here.

Spend 38 hours a week pulling exotics out of bushland and tell me how your tendinitis developing wrists speak to you.

Hey doesn't that morning glory (Ipomea indica) look beautiful?

^ Great photos, but do they last as a cut flower?

Flowers as gifts could be a pot of a small shrub in flower, I suppose. A commercial crop of exotics being controlled, would be a great sight for me!

I think they use Emu bush (Eremophila sp.) in the cut flower trade. Aus social needs a florist :)

Most of the noxious weeds that devastate bushland started off as showy garden plants.

Tradescantia albiflora completely blankets moist forest floors and strangles all native ground covers.

Pretty flower though right?

Then you get your large leaf and small leaf privets which will to a species crowd out the shrub level (Ligustrum sinense and lucidum) and trees:

What a fantastic floral display though:

Or mist flower (Ageratina riparia) which will absolutely destroy everything along a beautiful creek line:

But it looks pretty:

Lantana is nice to look at when flowering:

Pity about the millions of hectares of bushland it's devastated...

These are all plants that were brought to the country for their joyful floristic displays.

Madeira vine and Lantana camara are probably the worst weed on the North Coast. We have all those weeds here too. The worst thing about Environmental weeds is that they prevent natural regeneration. Planting for reafforestation is the most time consuming and costly way to regenerate. What we want is for natural regeneration to occur.

We are trying to retain biodiversity of species, and biodiversity of genes within those species too.

Funnily enough, Madeira was was planted around out houses for the fresh leaves to be taken as a laxative. I try and imagine what things would have looked like when this area was opened up to forestry over a century ago. Those people were bush people too, probably loved the bush!

I've chosen to think of it less as a Public Holiday Monday and more of as a Procrastinating Essay Writing Monday.

So a girl postulated to me yesterday that you're either a Beatles fan or an Elvis fan - and I've heard this said before. How true does this ring for everyone else?

Personally I love the Beatles but can't stand Elvis - I hate his voice.
