Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

try a cig holder like the one that Hunter Thompson uses. This will prevent the smoke from directly contacting your fingertips. What I don't understand is why quitting is not an option..

I know you have heard this a million times but the only true way is to quit smoking, if you really want to quit bad enough then you can. Thats what I did 4 months ago with cigs. I took that last drag from the way end of the butt(so nasty) held it in a second then blew it out thinking to myself this is it, now is the time. By the way it almost made me gag as well, and i left the ash tray filled with butts for about 2 weeks as a reminder of how nasty smoking cigarettes is. Good luck to you, I will say a prayer for you as well. I smoke the good dank, my doctor says my lungs are healthy, he probably knows i smoke weed. But at least with weed we know whats inside of it right.

I agree with the pumice stones, i think after some time, the pumice soap would work best on your hands. Nothing scrubs away gunk better then pumice in my opinion. Good luck to you, and belive me, if i can quit smoking then anyone can quit smoking because I have the single most addictive personality you will ever see lmao ;) stay cool either way bud

Second Hand Smoke

Ok, now I've utfse and searched every relevant forumn for a similar topic but I haven't found anything specifically relating to the my topic (which is weird considering how controversial its been)

if this thread needs to be merged I understand

Now I'm a proponent of not smoking cigarettes, as an athlete and someone who would like to be somewhat healthy in thirty years. But I'm really confused by all of this "Second Hand Smoke Kills" stuff that has been flying around recently. Now it defies conventional wisdom to be sure, but I was looking through scientific studies and all second hand smoke statistics are attributed, not directly proven through cause and effect, now I don't have a problem with this because it would seem like a hard thing to prove, but none of the studies show how they arrived at these figures.

If anybody could link me to significant (and scientifically sound) studies on it that would be awesome, also discuss...

If ya wanna really get pissed off, you should do a Google search on "Third hand smoke", which is now considered to be a health threat as well. It's basically just the SMELL of cigarette smoke on clothes and in hair, and it's supposedly a health risk.

If you consider everything that's in cigarette smoke--radioactive elements like Polonium-210 and Uranium, heavy metals like lead and mercury, cyanide, carbon monoxide, and other toxins--it makes sense that these things cause health problems. Studies have shown that cigarette smoke stays in the walls of homes for decades and can cause health problems in susceptible people. If you have radon gas in your home, it's a particularly lethal combination.

Not that there aren't literally hundreds of other health hazards out there, but cigarette smoke is one of the most easily avoidable. We have to eat, breathe, and drink water, but we don't have to smoke. It's a person's prerogative, but non-smokers shouldn't be exposed to it if they choose not to be. Smoking is just so normalized in our culture that people forget what's actually in it and underestimate its risks.

My $0.02 worth. Feel free to disagree.

Ima disagree. The ratio of smoke/atmosphere that exists in 'second hand' smoke is likely FAR below what could actually cause harm to the human body. Smokers smoke a pack of cigarettes a day for decades before they face serious consequences. In one cigarette there is probably enough smoke to account for months worth of exposure to the second hand variety. (Not months of continuous exposure of course) Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you read.

Yeah, I don't know exactly how bad second hand smoke is. I mean, I really haven't done any research on it. But I respect peoples right not to be exposed to it. I'm a smoker myself, and as much as it sucks to have to outside to light up a cig, I'd rather take the time to do that than expose others to my smoke. I mean, there are still plenty of smoking establishments as of right now, but that will probably change soon... and I don't really mind. I would hate to have to sit there and breathe in other peoples smoke if I didn't want to. Some people are allergic too. IDK, I just don't feel like its too much trouble just to step outside if you want a smoke.

Maybe you don't want to know, but there is FOURTH HAND SMOKE as well !!!

Oh my god. With this first, second, third and fourth hand smoke now posing so much treats I don't know how long I'll live actually.

And I didn't even talk about the fluorinated water we have to fight as well, which is actually far worse then all this bullshit. Somebody has to save the planet...

WOoooosh

Bullshit!!

Second hand smoke, while it can be annoying, isn't really all that bad. It's just fear mongering.

In this politically correct society, soon even the very existence of cigarettes will cause problems!!

Call that 5th hand smoke, I guess.

lol. The media says enough crap about everything else. Its simply just something for them to rant about and scare people about so they listen and pass it on about how bad smoking is. Sure its not good for you. But i doubt it has any real effect on you in such small amounts

First off what the hell is with all this first, second, third, and fourth bullshit? Jesus Christ, people have been smoking for years, sure it's bad but man...don't you think all that's a bit much? I kind of agree with min0taur, but myself being a smoker I do respect people who don't smoke and try my hardest not to smoke around non-smokers.

non-smokers shouldn't be exposed to it if they choose not to be.

How do you suppose we lessen that risk? I don't know where you live, but in my state (MA), nobody is allowed to smoke anywhere inside. Restaurants, clubs, hotels, none of it. There are no smoking/non-smoking sections anymore in restaurants, it's all non-smoking. They are even thinking about not allowing smoking in HOOKAH BARS which I find completely ridiculous but that's a different story. So right now the only public place people can smoke is outside, which yeah can cause a small risk to other people, but honestly it can't be worse than the rest of the pollution that people experience by walking outside. (I don't have any sources for this so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

you breathe a lot of harmful shit just walking along the street outside, but spewing smokey particulate matter into a closed viscinity is deffo gonna introduce more shit into the lungs. as an athlete you have even less worry than most people since your lungs will ventilate more in the course of a day than someone who doesn't really exercise. you still have to risk the cancer from the radioactive shit in cigarettes as Lady Codone mentioned, but if you eat plenty of fruits and veggies (antioxidants) then you'll be more than covered for that

The E-Cig

Has anyone tried the E-cigarette yet? They are starting to get more and more popular. I still haven't seen anyone carry one to the smokers garden at the school, but hopefully soon they will start appearing more.

Basically, its just like smoking vapor, your not actually burning anything. You dont even need a lighter. Its funny though because the tip pretends to light up to give you a simulation of smoking.

At the mall they had a little stand for them and I tried it out. Its kinda expensive to get started, but before long, the 150 will pay itself back. At first, its not very good. From what the guy said though, that is because your tastebuds are mostly fried from smoking 10-20 burning cigs everyday. After a week of smoking the e-cig, it starts to taste and feel more and more enjoyable.

I won't lie, at the time, ,I was craving a cig and it did not really curb my craving. It didnt give me that "kick" that cigs give. It also kind of hurt my throat a little bit. It did do a very good job in simulating a smoke though without hurting you. It felt like I was actually smoking, but I was just inhaling vapor. The cig coming with this fluid you use for the flavor and for the smoke. You can pretty much smoke on the same thing all day. Its pretty convenient. You can also smoke indoors without smelling anything up.

I may try this someday as a way to quit smoking, and as the years go by, im sure this thing will become much more developed and well rounded. One step closer to quittin!

Has anyone tried the E-cigarette?

I was at the mall the other day and they had an E-cigarette stand. I was craving a cigarette at the time, and he let me try some sample puffs of the thing.

As you know, its basically a mini vaporizer. You just put liquid in there and the cig lights up on the end (for effect) and you smoke the vapor. The cool thing is, it still gives you that "kick" you look for with cigs. I was craving a cigarette at the time, and I wont lie, it didnt completely curb the craving but.. In time, I could see this really working out.

It's suppose to be good for you.. Not GOOD for you, but not bad at all. Like 100% better for you than cigarettes. The guy said after a week of smoking the e-cig, your taste bud senses kinda come back and you can taste more of the e-cig flavor and makes it more enjoyable.

Not to mention your clothes, breath, and house will be more enjoyable and non smokey too haha..

I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck with these, because I'm seriously considering making the jump. With cigs at almost 7 bucks for a fucking pack, I'll either make the jump to e-cigs or off a building. :p

I used to own one. It was a cool novelty for a while. I still craved cigarettes but it helped me not smoke without losing my mind. Since you are still doing the smoking action (putting something that looks like a cigarette up to your lips and inhaling), it doesn't help you get over the familiar part of the smoking habit which I feel is important when trying to quit. I have found that the nicotine gum is more effective. It also gives you more of a buzz. One of the problems with the E cigarette is that it will only allow you to inhale a certain amount of vapor at a time, then it needs to recharge or something for like 20-30 seconds. I also had a hard time inhaling. At times I felt like it took too much effort to inhale one hit. For me, I chew nicotine gum. I buy the cheap market brand 4 mg. menthol flavor. One large box is about $40 and lasts me about 2 weeks. You can break 4 mg pieces in half if you really want to conserve. Once you get used to chewing the gum and have your smoking habit under control, you can start chewing regular gum here and there and work your way down from there. I think this is a very effective way to quit and will leave you with a good habit that will keep your breath fresh. The important thing with the gum is that you need to remember to chew a piece before you make the decision to smoke. You will be pleased that you did and satisfied without a cigarette. Good luck.
