Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

You're more worried about your cigarette habbit than you hydrocodone habbit? Am I the only one that see's that as strange?

Cigarettes are unhealthy and all, but even a hypoondriac can let opiates get out of hand.

care...i was thinking the excat same thing as you...well done about cutting out most of the fags but seriously if your willing to endure the health reprucssions of useing hydrocodone frequently i don't think a cig a day will harm you!
i think a lot of stuff like this is mental and just to do with genetics, if its gonna make you ill, you'll get ill, if its not going to it wont! my grandad is like 65ish has smoked about 20fags and 5joints a day since she was like 15 or something and has never given it a second thought and though his brain is a little loopy physically hes in peak condition and i know its different for everyone but really i'd smoke or don't smoke...i think obsessing about it is more unhealthy than doing it!
xox

finally quitting ( almost 16 mos ago) after 40 years of nicotine addiction, I would never tell anyone that one a day is OK...None is OK...I have friends that are social smokers, Friday or Saturday night with drinks kind of smokers...I hate them. I f you've never had the addiction, it's easy to stop. So stop. People always tell me I look much younger than my age, I often wonder if I'd look even younger, had I not smoked all those years..I know I'm saving a fortune in money...and I feel really good. (and yeah, weed has more tar than cigarettes, and it's the tar that kills ya)

hahaha

1 ciggie is a joke... try having a full on addiction where you smoke 2 an hour.

Quit while your behind, or if you are curious - take it up for a while.... its not healthy, but your body is resilient enough to withstand it for a few years.. it really isn't as bad as the media portrays..

but got its an absolute prick to give up (I'm on my third time quitting)... plus it stinks, people despise you for it (because they are self righteous assholes though) and it is hell expensive.

On the positive side, I am less stressed as a smoker, its can be social and nothing is as enjoyable as a cigarette sometimes.

P.S. I know this is a harm reduction site, but people are entitled to a shared view..

Lol~ my friends and I always joked how people think smoking weed is healthier because it is green or something, organic maybe.

OP- One way you could get a instinctive feel for the answer of your question is to start rolling filters into the cigs- you can buy them at some tobacco stores. Then when you're done break it open and look at the filter to see what goes into your lungs.

That was an eye opener for me. You're definitely inhaling some nasty shit, but it made me wonder what a filter would look like if every one of my breaths was filtered, just from living in a city.

Smoke of any kind causes emphysema, it doesn't matter what the source is. Smoke of any kind triggers inflammation of the alveoli. You may not get lung cancer from smoking, but on a long enough time course you will get emphysema. Therefore smoking one is just as bad as smoking the other.

You may or may not get lung cancer from smoking, but you will get emphysema.

As for the toxin content I'll have to find a source for you.

You don't smoke nearly as much over the course of your lifetime as you do if you're a regular cigarette smoker (averaging lets say a pack a day). Who smokes 30 joints a day? :D

You smoke like 2-3 joints a day on average if you're smoking a lot I'd say (although I'm sure there's people out there who smoke more).

^ Do you understand that even trace amounts of smoke from power plants or car exhaust increase the likelyhood of getting cancer?

One cigarette or one joint a day is a *huge* increase of inhaled pollutants over ambient pollution.

There is no guarantee that you'll get sick from anything. But to say that it is safe to inhale smoke, especially direct smoke from a plant, is simply wrong.

read back over my posts, dude, where I carefully note that I am not trying to argue that inhaling marijuana smoke is safe. I understand and acknowledge that inhaling smoke is harmful (no fucking shit). I argued against wizecrack's posts where he said inhaling marijuana smoke is just as harmful as inhaling cigarette smoke. I call bullshit and still call bullshit until some proof is shown. Cigarettes contain very harmful chemicals that are carcinogenic in their own right (with or without the smoke).

Well, to be fair, my claim is the negation of his claim (because of lack of proof on his part). I am not trying to offer a positive point in this thread (which would require proof).

I can deny his claim a priori because it lacks proof and is not logically derived. At the same time I remain open to the possibility for the truth of his claim (if there was sufficient evidence to support the claim). But, I ain't counting on it ;)

But, thanks for checking on my reasoning Ebola and MC ;)

hey bluelighters. i've had many user names in the past that i keep forgetting the password to ect so hers to starting fresh again.

I'm 27. been a smoker for 10 years. In the last few years ive strated to cut down using patches during the day. smoking ect during the night. ave 7 cigs a day. let me say now that I absolutley hate it.

Recently i endevourded on quiting completely from the 7th Jan. Lasted 2 weeks. Was okay to begin with but just got harder and harder as a went along. so I guess i want to know how other ex smokers manage to last much longer or forever. I'm at a loss. Whats the point in living and holding down a full time job and girfriend ect... when you are killing yourself day by day

Thoughts would really be appreciiated

Cheers

Not wanting to control or lead your life but you have to make drastic changes in your life to quit certain things.

Disconnect from people who do wrong for a while or at least until you can gain full control of yourself. Break routines for e.g. stop smoking after dinner this becomes a new routine that you have trained your body to do. Then keep on applying to whenever else you were smoking. Eventually you will develop a full non smoking routine, you might have a cigarette but it will taste like grot as it doesn't suit your routine any more.

Another option is cut a straw to the same length of a cigarette every time you crave it smoke the straw after a week or two you will realise it's dumb and just stop all together.

Worse comes to worse continue smoking and invest shares in a tobaco company at least you'll get some of your money back for the damage there doing to you.

there are numerous threads on this topic, after 17 mos., smoke-free, I'd say focus on something else, like remembering passwords, or a new interest that occupies your mind.

Well, for me the patches worked. 3 times... =/... and im smoking again, I never learn I swear.

Replaced my cigarettes with the Gum, it was easier to cut back gum in take than cigarette intake. I basically tapered, as one would do with benzos, and when I was at 1 piece every other day I gave it cold turkey and the withdrawals were pretty light. I still smoke on occasion but haven't bought a pack since early November, been through withdrawals twice since then due to smoking too many days in a row.

I find I always think a cigarette will make me feel better, but when I have it, or even just a drag (3 puffs), it doesn't do much for me anymore. I'm pretty proud of myself for quitting, though I only smoked for 2 years and at my worst was having 6-8 a day.

i don't know anyone quits. sorry, not helpful. but honestly i have had an easier time quitting drugs. i'm not going to walk down the street everyday and see people sitting at the bus stop doing lines off each other's backs or smoking black tar outside a coffee shop.
i've cut a down a lot lately because i'm short on cash and that's def a good motivator. i also find i smoke a lot less when i don't hang out with my friends that are smokers. also, for me putting too much pressure on "quitting" smoking makes me want a cigarette even more. i do much better when i just try and tell myself to not have that cigarette and just have it later, and continue doing so.

yeah i used gum too, feels good

its all within your mind. its willpower. do you control the drug, or does it control you?
