Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

Well you have to stop smoking the damn things as a first and final step.

Get a bag of suckers and everytime you fiend for a ciggy stick one of those in your mouth and suck on it.

I have been cigarette free since Nov 2005. I smoked for 16 years. I used the patch for a month. 14mg for the first 2 weeks. 7mg for the following 2 weeks.

During the times I would usually smoke (morning coffee, after dinner, drinking alcohol) I kept myself busy (internet during coffee, cleaning the kitchen after dinner, decreasing my alcohol consumption).

After a few months, smoking no longer made sense to me. Why would I choose to inhale smoke when people can die of smoke inhalation? Why am I running the risk of smoking related illness? I realized that I am THAT important. Being healthy became a priority.

I am embarrassed that I smoked so long and rationalized it with I don't smoke enough to quit.

Taper, taper, taper. Either by taking control of when you smoke, and gradually wean yourself off, or by switching to a different means of getting nicotine and tapering off that.

That leaves the social/habit aspect left, which is a bit stickier depending on how many people that you know that smoke, and how much of your social time is centred around smoking (or involves smoking). Like any other addiction, what often works well is replacing the problem behaviour with something else. Chewing gum is a popular choice.

When I quit, many moons ago, I tapered my day-to-day smoking down to levels where there was no point in buying packs any more, but I still smoked a lot at clubs/raves and what not. I really liked menthols when I was on E, and cigarillos when I was drinking. But in time I was able to cut the association of smoking and partying. It helped that I had a friend to quit with, and that there was always plenty of cannabis around. ;)

Good luck to you! It's not an easy thing to quit, not least of which because it is more or less socially acceptable, and fully legal.

the withdrawals are a week at the most, all else is mental projection.

once you understand just how stupid you are for smoking... the health issues and the wasted money.... smokers light up for one reason only: they want to feel the way non-smokers do naturally... free from the desire to smoke. smokers can only feel free from that desire by giving in to it and lighting up. Stupid, really. Extremely stupid. because teh relief this action brings is short-lived and the desire will be back with a vengeance . . . vicious circle... break it TODAY!

Allen Carr's "the Easy Way to Stop Smoking" made this clear to me.

Replace it with something else. That's how I quit. I actually replaced cigarettes with weed, but I wouldnt suggest that to you lol. it did help me quit entirely though. i havent had a cigarette in over a year. The best thing to replace it with would be exercise, gum, or coffee or something.

Also, don't drink for awhile cuz that will make you crave a cigarette like no other, as you know :)

7 per day is not that drastic.

It's not until you lose count of the number you are smoking that you need "intervention" to break the habit.

It's called the "chain of addiction" for a reason.

You genuinely have to find a way to break the chain, and not just lower the intake.

i haven't smoked a cigarette in five days.... i think i'm officially quitting.
ways to quit? become so broke that it's cigarettes or gas (when you're already driving w/o car insurance) to put in your car to get to work. now saving $35 a week that previously went to fucking up my lungs more than they already are.
i keep telling myself i'm not going to quit and for some reason that's really helping me not freak out. however, i actually feel so much better, went for a run before class and i felt so much less out of breath and no chest pains afterward. the first three days sucked but i've felt pretty ok the last two.

Find out why you started smoking, realize how silly and pointless it is, and take up heroin instead. That usually works.

there are numerous threads on this topic, after 17 mos., smoke-free, I'd say focus on something else, like remembering passwords, or a new interest that occupies your mind.
that was funny

My boyfriend recently quit smoking, about 7 months ago when we found out I was pregnant. He did it basically the same way I quit about 5 years ago. Replace cigarettes with weed. What he did was ground up about a quarter ounce (of cheap bud) into really fine shake and rolled it up into joints. Whenever he craved a cigarette he would smoke enough of the joint until he got high. It really worked for him. It was really really really hard for him to quit until he tried this. He was trying to taper himself off and chewing the gum prior to his joint method.

I quit cigarettes at the same time I quit heroin. It was easy at first because I was too sick to even think about cigarettes. After that I smoked bongs till I passed out (I didnt have a job though of course) and ate shitload (gained about 50lbs 8o)

I recommend my boyfriends method of rolling joints :)

I know you're being sarcastic but you're totally wrong here. I never smoked more cigarettes then when I was high on heroin. I smoked more than 2 packs a day sometimes. This is about as idiotic as my mom's plan to take a valium everytime she craved a cigarette--get a clue!!

I used the gum to taper down, recently started chewing occasionally again (started around the time of the election). Buying the gum again tommorrow and restarting the taper (I may give cold turkey a shot real quick). Haven't had a cig in over 6 months. I don't even crave them anymore.

Just find new activities and be careful around season changes. Because then you have to learn a whole new set of activities (raking leaves, shoveling snow, gardening, mowing the lawn etc) that you are used to doing with a cigarette or dip.

Also, work out and start eating healthy. That helps

Yellow fingertips/skin from smoking cigs.

I didn't know where to post this, I hope this is the right place. Anyway I have yellow fingertips, and yellow skin from smoking cigs. I know the best way to stop this would be to quit smoking but that's not an option as of right now (although I'm trying to cut down).

Does anyone know a way to get rid of this yellowish stuff that builds up? I'm thinking bleach would work, but when I tried it before it didn't work too well. I tried scrubbing my skin with bleach and nothing really happened. Anyone have any tips? Thanks.

Back when I used to smoke a lot more, my finger nails got kind of yellowish too (never had the problem with my skin, however)... shortly after cutting down that went away. I smoke 3 (max) a day now, and my nails, along with every other part of my body, are looking and feeling much healthier!!!

A friend of mine uses pumice stones to get rid of the yellow on her fingers. I've also heard lemon juice works well, just wash with lemon juice and warm water.

im always amazed by this. i smoke a lot of cigs, but this has never happened to me.

I used to get it pretty bad, then i quit for 5 months or so and after starting up again i never had the same problem, i think it's more common if you smoke roll-ups really.

I think that's true, I can smoke pre-rolled cigs for months and not get any tar stains on my fingers but only have to smoke rollies for a week or two to start getting the yellowness.

Try dipping your fingers in concentrated lemon juice or white vinegar, and massaging your nails with vitamin E oil or coconut oil.
I also smoke from time to time and my nails are perfectly pink and white....I do keep them clean and short so I dunno. When I used to have longer nails before (and I was a chronic two pack a day smoker..ugh gross) my nails were yellower than usual. Maybe cutting down can prevent that...but you could still try the lemon juice thingy.
