Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

^ best of luck, hoptis. You can do it, bro.

It's the smoke itself that is bad for you (organic hydrocarbon waste poducts), it doesn't really matter what it is you are smoking.
Thats a misleading statement, at best. If thats the case then why is marijuana so much healthier to smoke than cigarettes. The shit they put in cigarettes is bad for you. Bottom line.

Because you don't smoke a pack of joints a day. Marijuana isn't healthier to smoke than cigarettes, a joint has more toxins in it than a cigarette. I'm not saying cigarettes are good for you, what I'm saying is that smoke of any kind is bad for you. I guess it depends on what kind of tobacco you smoke and how your country regulates it's growth, harvest, and packaging.

if it gets rid of your anxiety, i'd say keep it to one a day. anxiety is an illness just like lung cancer.

I definitely agree with wize here.

wizekrak is correct. I know a guy who does research on the topic of carcinogens found in smoke. One of them is benzo[a]pyrene. That one and other bad stuff is found in all smoke- cigs, marijuana, woodsmoke, auto exhaust..... Maybe different kinds of smoke have different mixes of harmful chemicals. It's almost impossible to avoid all of these sources. Your body can resist it to a certain degree. All other things equal, this resistance is largely genetic and is related to your cells' ability to repair their DNA.
You sound like your using your tobacco responsibly. I don't think 1 a day will harm your health. 1 a day is so little that you can actually feel an effect and enjoy it, as opposed to compulsively chain-smoking all day.
One thing you might try that should be less harmful is to switch to a hookah style water pipe. The tobacco never actually combusts. It vaporizes so you don't, as far as I know, get the carcinogenic burnt hydrocarbon products that are found in all smoke, as wizekrak mentioned.

^ That was completely uncalled-for.

It is common sense that any smoke (foreign particles, all manner of reactive and pyrolized chemicals...etc) is going to be damaging to the body at some degree.

I smoke one (and tear off like 1/2 an inch each time so it's like 3/4's of a cigarette) like every 3 days. Today and yesterday I just got nauseous. I'm not saying I'm never going to smoke again, but only ever once in a while.

I really enjoy pot.

It does tax and damage the lungs.

Refusing to see that is a denial.

While I agree that any sort of inhaling smoke into the lungs can't be GOOD for you, there's no way you could convince me that marijuana is worse than cigarettes. Cigarettes (specifically cigarettes, not tobacco in general) are specifically engineered to be addictive. From the packaging, to the shape and size of them, to the additives within them. Lifelong cigarette smokers are certainly worse off physically than lifelong marijuana smokers. Whether you're smoking one cigarette per day, or more, it's not a healthy habit.

People tend to start off smoking cigarettes only occasionally....you don't start the habit hopelessly addicted. The notion of having a smoke slowly works its way into your consciousness more and more often.

I have never smoked myself, but I've known many smokers.

I've said this once UT, that's not going to happen. Even if so, that's been said like 6 times, so I get it.

I haven't smoked in a while, and I don't think I'm going to for a long time. I gave it up pretty easily. Kind of tapered myself off, but still it wasn't that hard.

I've been smoking 0-3 cigs a day for years. while i can run and what not just fine, it still has an effect on my lungs and system i'm sure.

I look around me, Jamshyd, and can honestly find no person around me that can lead me and call to me and tell me what to say or how to act. It has been like this for about a year or two now, I have grown up and away from the people surrounding me and no longer look to others for what to say or how to think. This means that I am not waiting for somebody to 'call for' something from me to say. I no longer need this type of assistance.

This poster said marijuana and cigarettes cause cancer at the same rate because they are both smoke.

Again, I ask, did this poster just shit this information out over our board with no proof or back up? It screams misinformation to me and goes against the 'common knowledge' I know of (that marijuana is many many times more safe than cigarettes).

I agree with you though, Jamshyd, that smoking anything is not very healthy for the body. That is not up for debate and we are not disputing that. We are disputing the claim that marijuana and cigarettes cause cancer at the same rate (since its not the chemicals that cause cancer as per the posters claim but the smoke itself). I call bullshit on that garbage information.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

the more u restrict ur cigarettes, the greater you look forward to them and more value u give them in general, making u more addicted.

Cold Turkey is the easiest way, every ciggarette makes u crave another.
Allen Carr's Easyway to stop smoking = awesome book
I read it and I havn't had a cigarette in like two months, but more importantly I've never craved one, not even for a second. Please read this book, quitting smoking was the easiest thing I've ever done. And I'm a drug addict, if i can quit smoking from this book anyone can. and you will find it easy.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

There are a thousand-and-one different ways to respectfully refute an argument you disagree with, and that previous post was not one of them. If you had said that to me, I would have been extremely offended.

You are welcome to be as free as you like, just don't hurt others in the process.

sorry it makes me mad when people say something as uninformed as "marijuana is just as bad as smoking cigarettes."

Marijuana is medicine that helps people transform their bodies and their minds and heal their sicknesses.

Cigarettes are a vice/bad habit and have never done any good for anybody.

No comparison.

My take:
burning plants tend to output similar particles and vapors...the only difference being their active constituents. Marijuana happens to have some anti-carcinogenic agents, ameliorating increased cancer risk from smoking it, but leaving intact upper respiratory damage. It also happens that nicotine can speed carcinogenesis in some cases.

We should remember that more smokers die of heart disease rather than cancer or emphysema. This is from a combination of nicotine's stimulant effects, ingestion of carbon monoxide, and getting gunk in the lungs. Of these three effects, smoked marijuana will cause the latter two.

ebola
