nhl 08-09 season: official thread!

i'm somewhat impartial on the pens/caps series. part of me wants to see the pens get another chance, especially if the wings end up in the finals. as much as people like seeing different teams win from year to year, you have to admit, the fact that the two teams could repeat this year is kind of interesting. last year's finals were pretty exciting and i have no reason to doubt, that if the pens and wings end up there this year, that it would be any different.

HOWEVER... part of me wants to see what ovechkin can do deep in the playoffs. it's hard to imagine him not bringin it heavy in the finals. i think it'd be good for the nhl's exposure. this pens/caps series though will probably be huge too. ovechkin/semin vs. crosby/malkin has to have some draw even in the US.

i have no interest in seeing boston OR the canes in the finals. not terribly interested in seeing the ducks go, the blackhawks, on the other hand... even though they're another central division rival, i'd like to see them do well. i like their young guys and what they've done with the franchise since WWW passed away. they've completely turned that franchise around and i gotta hand it to em, they've done it the right way.
 
it's hard to believe that a couple of years ago, the Blackhawks were the only team in pro sports without a TV contract! I read somewhere that they called the old man who owned the team "Dollar Bill," so I guess he was not well liked in Chicago, haha

OV is definitely great for the game. He's converted so many people in DC/Maryland/Virginia to hockey fans. I've been following the team my whole life, and I've never seen people excited about the Capitals like this. The only thing this team used to be known for was Dale Hunter's late hit, but now thats all changed thanks to OV
 
yeah, by all accounts wertz was not a well liked man. i know he had his theory that if you don't televise home games the fans will pay to come watch rather than stay at home and watch on tv, but obviously, as this year has shown, that's not the case. they've built a good core of young players through the draft and made some key acquisitions (brian campbell for example), given the fans something to be proud of and look what's happened, they've set some record attendance numbers this year if i'm not mistaken.

but i'm with you on OV. he's been surreal. the guy just doesn't seem to let up. on top of that the caps are another good story. ever since boudreau took over the team, they've been a major contender. mind you that's the opinion of an outsider. admittedly, i've never followed the caps too well until ovechkin came to town, but i don't remember them looking this good before boudreau took the reigns.
 
I want to see the Black Hawks take it this year. I saw them play down here and they arent that bad actually. Whats weird though is I saw Kane do alot in that game but has he really done much in the playoffs?
 
Black hawks arent doing too great tonight

3-0 almost in the third. you got to think of it this way though. they played like 3 days ago. Vancouver has had at least a week to rest. i think the black hawks will do better next game
 
Just got my Miroslav Satan 3rd (Blue, Classic) Penguins jersey in the mail. Perfect timing for the Pens-Caps series as I live in the DC area. It will be worn often in the next week or so
 
^^^ "Satan" might look good on the back of a jersey, but he probably wont be with the Penguins next year. You should have gone Malkin or Crosby

agreed. of course, who am i to talk? i'll take a jersey of a player i like if they come to columbus on a year's contract. the first RBK edge jersey i bought was huselius... granted he signed a 4 year contract, but at the time, he was unproven here so who was to say if he'd be here for the full 4. it's still possible he could be out quicker, but given what he did in columbus this season, i can see him being a mainstay. he wasn't necessarily the most productive player on our roster, but he fit into the system REAL well.

unfortunately. as much as i LOVE playoff hockey... my interest this year went down a little when the jackets were eliminated. in past years, it was a little different simply because we weren't in it. this year my interest skyrocketed... then when my hopes were shattered, my interest went down a bit. don't get me wrong... i'm still enjoying it, but given the shitty coverage of the nhl around here... the only games i've really gotten to see have been at my buddy's house since i don't get all them fancy channels.

Yeah, but he's always been one of my favorite players. I was excited when we got him. Plus if I go to any Pens games it will be when they play the Caps here so I like having a former Caps' players jersey.

Not to mention EVERYBODY has a Malkin or Crosby jersey....
 
Why am I just finding this thread? And how the hell did kane score the most beautiful goal ever?
 
^great game for the Black Hawks, Kane is one of my favorite hockey players so i was happy to see him finally do something for the team
you have to see the on youtube or espn's website because it was an amazing beautiful goal, he played a great game last night

as of right now the standings are:

Washington and Pittsburgh, are tied with 3 wins each
Boston tied it with Carolina tonight
Chicago eliminated the Canucks last night
Detroit and Anaheim are playing right now, Detroit has 3 wins, Ducks have 2, I hope the Ducks win tonight, the deserve to move on
 
Ducks are up 2-0 at the end of the second :D

They've finally kicked up their game a notch, too bad they didn't do it when they were up 2-1 in the series though. Hopefully they win tonight and again at Detroit.

^your forecast was indeed correct, 2-1 Anaheim :D Although Detroit very nearly tied it with just a couple of seconds left...

I hope you're right about them winning in Detroit...
