Mushy season opener 2006

mate: Im really quite glad you didn't want to drive.... hypothetically speaking imagine having to look at the mangled guts of kids when you crash into a family car on the way home... not much fun at all.
Please be careful with mushrooms and driving its REALY not the go at all!

ey all, since the season is open, may i make a simple comment..

When in the feild hunting and you come across another mushie hunter, is their some sort of hand guester we can come up with, i find it awkard, just standing their, like im looking for spare change i dropped.. maybe a tap on the chin or something.. i dont know 2 stoned..

haha, I just laugh and go over and introduce myself. Have a chat ask them how long they have been looking. Compare notes and ask if they want to tag along for some more hunting.
Usually it works a charm, and you end up having allot in common..... Im yet to bump into a rude or territorial mushroom hunter here in Melbourne!

I went out a got a few more subs yesterday. One of my spots was totally empty for some reason (Other hunters?) so I didn't get as many as I would have liked. Heres a piture of some that I got:

Anyone else going to post some pics?

Happy Hunting

After 300 plus last saturday morning we decided to check out the spot and weren't disappointed. Appox 400 fresh mushrooms, nice size too! Should be an interesting morning. If I eventually figure out how to post pics in the thread I'll add them below. Any advice would be appreciated guys...:\

Jesus Christ guys! Abitofaworry, you found that many and was after more! Who you trying to get to trip, half of Aus. And Twominds, you tripper! Just a question, how many of you did it take to do 300 shrooms and how did you take them, tea, fresh or dried?

lol I reckon...Unless your drying and preserving those your either wasting them or getting your wider friend network extremely high

Hey man the 300 or so from last week were devoured in under 24 hours by 7 of us.=D Including Killarava2day and steveElektro. Just can't figure out how to post pics in the thread.:\

Mushrooms are probably my favourite drug and they are only around for part of the year. I grab more than I need and dry the extras for the 'off season'. With a couple more hunts it looks like I'll be set for summer!

I also give some away to people without the time to hunt for themselves. I love my mushrooms! Speaking of which, I might go for a quick hunt now. I’ll post results later.

twominds: If your still can't get images up let me know and I will explain in detail via private message. Good luck to all the hunters!

It was pitch black by the time I got out to my spot so I only found enough shrooms for one average trip. It was worth it anyway. I think that you have to treat mushroom hunting like fishing. Even if you don't get anything you should still have had a good time.

Hey Guys,

Had my first find yesterday.

they were located in the eastern suburbs near a waterway.
Bark mulched area with the long bladed grass.
Produced a dark purple spore print and are about 10 - 15 cm long

To AndyzPsylocybes and Jwlst, you dont necessarily need to go to cow paddocks to find magic mushies in Australia. Psilocybe Cubensis, aka Golden teachers/tops grow out of cow shit however Psilocybe Subaeruginosa grows out of decaying wood chips and pine needle litter on the ground. 4-7 days after rains and cool temperatures, go to parks reserves and forests, anywhere with woodchips and/or pine needles and you should have some luck....

Also subs are far more potent than cubes anyway so you will benefit more by looking for them :P

In queesland the mushrooms were always in cow paddocks, although at a different time of the year.

They seem to like bark and pine needles in Victoria

did my 1st sucsessfull hunt yesterday.... didnt get much but enough for 1-2 doses each for the 4 of us...

highlight for the day for me was my find...
One drug promoting another... I call it the G - Shroom

Can anyone comment on how the hunter valley is for mushrooms, generally subaeruginosa not cubensis. My dad has a property up there and I know that it gets colder there than it does here in Sydney so I thought I might check it out after I know it's had a bit of rain.

Anyone had personal experience in Hunter Valley or know of mushrooms growing there?

Focks those mushrooms look a little on the old side :( I'd split them lengthwise and have a look in the stems and gills for bugs/ lavae. While the stray bug GENERALLY doesn't cause any problems, I've seen several people become quite sick after eating mushrooms that looked ok(ish), but were home to a few too many bugs :(

Unless they are perfect specimins, I'd suggest splitting all mushroms lengthwise and do a quick shake/ inspection for bugs - it may be an unnessary step but i'd prefer to get my protein from other sources ;)

FYI two FANTASTIC ways for drying mushrooms when sheets of paper and a fan are not practical.

Ontop on the car dashboard with the demister on :) Naturally you'd want to put something between the mushrooms and the glass so your finds are not easily seen by other drivers, but this method dries out even the wettest subs in about an hour. Perfect for bush hunting missions or when you don't intend to be home for a while.

Central heating vents. Place mushrooms on piece of flywire or other fabric with holes in it. VERY loosly tie flywire up with a piece of string. Remove heating vent grill, lower mushroom bag into duct, tie bag onto grill, replace grill and PRESTO!, super sluth drying method. DON'T turn heating up super high (mushrooms loose potency when exposed to 45C+ temps).
In a few hours the mushrooms will be 'still bendable' dry, ready to descicant drying.

thanks for the advice slingshot,

Went for another hunt yesterday found quite a nice patch.
They were identified to be p. australiana.

Some were a bit on the old side but still good otherwise.

Going on another hunt this afternoon hopefully post with some more fruitful results :D

p. australiana? WOW =D Focks do you by any chance have any close up images/ images of the gills? Australiana have been quite an elusive strain, I'd love to see some more detailed pics
