movies that change your opinion of certain actors

i also thought that richard gere's turn in 'chicago' was uncharacteristically frothy.

Man, it's funny you should say that....I remember when I saw Chicago I was much impressed with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweiger (or however you spell her name), whom I'd never really disliked but not thought a lot of...but Richard Gere, who I do generally quite like as an actor--I didn't think he did such a good job at all. He seemed really out of place with the whole film..

And it took Fight Club for me to like Brad Pitt. His performance in say, Seven? Ugh. "Whats in the box...AHHHHHHHHHH...Whats in the fucking box!?...AHHHHHHHHHHHH....whats in the box!?!?!?"

I personally also loved him in 12 Monkeys.... shows what wide reason of acting he can do.

Brad Pitt is actually my favorite actor, actually tied with Johnny Depp.... my whole point of posting about him was to say i thought he did an awesome job in that role.

Brad Pitt is definately a good actor, or at least was up until he did Troy. Either the screenplay for that movie was horrid or he just had entirely too much coligen injected into his lips for him to speak properly... I enjoyed Troy for entertainment purposes, but it and Brad Pitt could have been so much more... Pitt did amazing work in 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, Interview with a Vampire, and even Snatch. I hope he doesn't turn into just a sex symbol / mindless actor.

Jim Carrey tops my list for this thread... Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine are two of my favorite movies, and Jim Carrey did an AMAZING job in both of them, especially Eternal Sunshine. I laughed at his comedy before, but didn't respect him in the least, now he is definately one of my favorite actors.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a tough one to place for me. He was amazing in Basketball Diaries and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, then he was in Titanic and it went down hill for awhile. After he did Titanic he was turned into a teen idol / sex symbol and I lost a lot of respect for him for that. Since then, he was in one movie that I enjoyed a lot, Catch Me if You Can. I really don't know what to think of him anymore.

I couldn't stand Leo Dicaprio prior to the Beach. Yes, I know it's supposidly a lame movie, but I liked the premise and he was suited to the role (even though he's completely different to the book character).

I never really cared that much for either Jim Carrey (hated his slapstick stuff with the exception of Dumb & Dumber, and didn't care for The Truman Show...didn't see Man on the Moon) or Kate Winslet (Titanic was god-awful), but they were both excellent in Eternal Sunshine.

ive never seen eternal sunshine but since u said it was excellent i might just go out and get it :) ... If you dont like Carrey's slapstick comedy then u might wanna check out The Majestic .... there is comedy but it shows he can really throw down some drama. i tohught it was pretty good and a good change from his usual stuff.

^^^Thanks for the tip...I'd already seen The Majestic, but I'd forgotten about it. I enjoyed the movie overall, but it hadn't really done anything to change my opinion of Carrey...I still wasn't overly impressed with his range.

Btw, I don't think Eternal Sunshine is out on DVD yet-it just finished theater release about 2 months ago-so you might try to catch it on cable when it comes on.

Now everyone can agree that Angelina Jolie is super fine, I really came to respect her when I saw Girl Interupted, I just thought she was amazing, and then the lara croft movies, *shudder* totally unwatchable except for her sheer hotness.

I completely agree! She entertained me in Interview with the Vampire and Bring it on but I really thought of her as an actress after watching that movie.

Damn I guess I just like girls that can play those wacked out roles. :)

Yeah i'm pretty much repeating what alot have already said...

ANgelina Jolie in Girl Interupted
Nick Cage in Adaptation
Adam Sandler- Punch Drunk Love
Robin Williams in One hour Photo
Camren Diaz- Being John Malkovitch
Brad Pitt in Fight Club and 12 Monkeys
Bruce Willis in 12 Monkeys and 5th Element

the ones that haven't been mentioned

McCauly Caulkin (sp?)-- The Good Son and Party Monster
Seth Green in Part Monster
Patrick Stewart in Moby Dick
Denzel Washington in the Rookie.

Marlon Wayons - requiem for a dream (dislike to hate) In genreal i don't think any of the wayons brothers are that funny, and Marlon just seemd to be the worst in the bucnh, then he goes and plays a part striaght. I thought he was one of the best supporting actors that year. Pisses me off that he's done nothing but shit sience.

DD -- I totally agree with you about Seth Green in Party Monster. He really played that roll perfectly, after doing some research and finding out exactly what James St. James was really like, it seems as if Green was really on point. I was actually pretty surprised to see that he can actually act instead of play the same role over and over and over again.

I have always loved and admired johnny depp--in ALL his old movies such as Edward Scissorhands,Whats eating GilbertGrape, and even Crybaby et al ----i never lost faith in his abilities even if he sorta disappeared for some time. So seeing him in Pirates and FINALLY winning an Oscar almost made me cry. (hah!) On the same note, seeing Traci Lords acting in Crybaby totally reaffirmed my opinion that a porn star is a porn star is a porn star and the audience will never forget it, so she should just quit while shes ahead (i think she did anyway, lol.)

Val Kilmer in old movies such as Top Secret, The Saint, etc was just another okay actor to me then...but after watching him in the Salton Sea and Wonderland , i am COMPLETELY smitten.

I never liked Leonardo DiCaprio, but I thought he did a fairly good job in Gangs of New York.

Marlon Wayans in Requiem For A Dream was one of the most surprising performances I've ever seen. I didn't expect him to have half the ability he displayed in his performance.
