movies that change your opinion of certain actors

Leo di Cap - Even though it was before he did Romeo & Juliet, The Beach etc. After seeing The Basketball Diaries, I now think he's a decent actor.

though i'd always *liked* him beforehand, twelve monkeys really opened my eyes up in regards to bruce willis - it seems he can act; i don't particularly love tom cruise, but i definitely appreciated him more after seeing magnolia

Dude, totally!!

I like Bruce Willis just because he's got that charisma cocky thing going that makes him a bit of a spunk, but he was GREAT in 12 Monkeys....I also think he does a great job in the cheesier movies he does, or the ones with more 2-D characters, like 5th Element or Hudson Hawk...he plays cheesy because he's a good actor, not because he can't act; I think there's a difference.

And with Tom Cruise...he's not one of my favourite actors in the world, but I do give him his props...in a way, I think the blockbuster star types are disadvantaged because they very rarely get to show their range and are often restricted to being the archetypal hero. Look at Brad Pitt...he's a fantastic actor, but what was the last movie he was in where he really played a role?

^^^ very fair call - though i think pitt's fight club role has a lot of depth, you're spot on about the hollywood blockbuster actors. which, i guess, is why a lot of big-name actors like to take smaller independant roles every so often to broaden their range. it's a pity when an otherwise good actor isn't really able to show his wares...

im gonna have to agree with Shucklak .... Robin Williams absolutely blew my mind. after seein him in comedy after comedy he finally came out of his shell and showed he could do some drama and suspense. Insomnia and One Hour Photo were intense movies and i have a better appreciation for him.

Insomnia was a terrible movie; Hollywood ruined that film. I definitely fell asleep. The original French version is much better.

On topic, Adam Sandler surprised me with Punch Drunk Love--I really enjoyed his troubled character. :)

^ i didnt say it was a good movie ... i was talkin bout robin williams ability to do great both in drama and comedy.

Yeah Finder, good call on Punch Drunk Love. It was good seeing Sandler do something different.

It's gonna sound wierd, but I hated Sean Astin in the first two LOTR's with a burning passion akin to the fire in the belly of Mount Doom. However in Return of the King I found his acting to be rather superb IMHO and I no longer hate him. . .at all. :)

Oh yeah and I very much disliked Will Smith until I saw Bagger Vance, don't ask me why. 8)

Tom Berenger - Platoon (dire to good)
Michael Douglas - Wall Street (dire to good)
Tom Cruise - Born of 4th July (dire to good)... to dire / good / dire / good....etc.
John Travolta - Pulp Fiction (dire to good)
Robin Williams - One Hour Photo (dire to good)

The Talented Mr Ripley sucked ass - but the actors in it have since redeemed themselves in my eyes at least. Jude Law, in particular.

I totally agree about Ben Affleck - Daredevil totally ruined him for me, altho Chasing Amy didn't help matters :D

Jude Law was always pretty good. Even Gattica isn't as bad as The Talented Mr.Ripley. And he was in Existenz, which is a severly underated scifi movie.

OH! Another actor from Daredevil: Collin Ferrel. I liked him, then he did Phone Booth, now I hate him.

And it took Fight Club for me to like Brad Pitt. His performance in say, Seven? Ugh. "Whats in the box...AHHHHHHHHHH...Whats in the fucking box!?...AHHHHHHHHHHHH....whats in the box!?!?!?"

Jude Law was also the best thing in Road to Perdition IMHO. Yes even better than Paul Newman.

I don't rate Colin Farrell but hopefully Oliver Stone's upcoming epic (slurp!! drool!!!) will change that.
