Movie Reviews Part 2 - The good, the bad and the ... rentals

I watched Coach Carter on the weekend.
For a stereotypical Basketball movie, it was pretty damn good. :) Probaly the best Basketball related movie I've seen.
Definatley worth a rental.

Also, my g/f is a big fan of the Disney/Pixar type animated movies. She got Sinbad: The Seven Sea's (or something).
Me being the grump that I am, said I wasn't going to watch it.
I ended up loving it. Heh. Some of the action sequences in it are amazing and you kind of forget you're watching a cartoon. The characters are fun and interesting although a little cliche'd but what do you expect for a childrens movie?
How can they make animated chicks so hot?
 
I saw "prime" today
i dont want to give away much of the plot line (as if you dont know what happens it makes the movie a little more interesting)

Basicly theres a chick, i forget her name
and she starts going out with this guy
and she tells her therapist
then the therapist works out the chick is going out with HER son

humour ensues

i saw kiss, kiss, bang, bang tonight

you could tell it's fairly low budget...and some parts were almost cringe worthy, but conversely, the funny bits were laugh out loud funny...some of the dialogue and jokes just really worked.

Val Kilmer is probably the best as the deadpan gay detective.

i saw good night and good luck the other night and it was, um... good! ;) it's a black and white movie which has some pretty wonderful framing shots, but i have to warn people that unless you already know something about the McCarthy period in america you're going to have trouble keeping up with what's going on.

robert downey jr plays one of the lead roles in this, and after the film had finished and the credits were rolling an old man who was sitting behind my friend and i said upon reading the actors name on screen, 'oh robert downey jr was in this! '=D neither my friend nor i could help it and we both started laughing out loud. the guy was nearly in 3/4 of the movie for fucks sake and he didn't even notice him.
 
i saw the preview for good night and good luck last night and thought it looked awesome! :)

particularly appropriate considering my signature!
 
Goodfellas was on showtime the otha day, such a good movie
Ray liotta is such a good actor, doesnt get enough credit

Pleo: i'd say it's more of a sign of a good character actor and an audience member who is a bit slow, for there was a definite sense of the guy meaning 'oh i know robert downey jr, i like that guy.... robert downey jr was is this?!' when he said what he did.

mp: exactly. the film tackles some very interesting issues that can be seen as transcending generation boundaries, which is one of the reasons why it's a great watch.
 
I watched the following the other night:

3 Extremes A collection of 3 Korean/Japanese twisted tales from established and upcoming directors, the first 2 shorts, Dumplings and cut, were quite good, the third, The box by Takashii Miikem, really sucked arse. Like really really sucked arse, I don't know what's been up with him lately, but his latest movie, IZO, also sucked... 6.6/10 Would be higher if not for the third movie..

Spiral The true sequel to the ring, not so much of a horror as the first one, more of an explanatory movie so the audience gets the why. If also delves into human suffering and the lengths people would go to to end grief and guilt. 5/10: Just not scary, at all.

Land of the Dead Zombies, I love zombies. This movie was great, and as with all his works, was using zombies as an image to portray something else, in this case, zombies were terrorists. Nice movie, although kind of lacked the suspenseful ooomph of previous works.

was decent, perhaps a little slow for some but very interesting none the less, i particularly liked the use of actual footage. my friend remarked that perhaps it would have better as a documentary, but then we wouldnt have seen the amazing performance of david strathairn (spelling?). would you believe he was not a smoker before they started? george clooney could be up for some occupational health and safety issues if he happens to develop lung cancer!

as an aside, on the way out of the theatre surrounded by 40 something intellectuals (i am 25) i said in a deadpan voice: could have done with a car chase, my mate replied equally deadpan: yeah, or maybe a shooting. cant say the humour hit the mark with the rest audience, still funny though

i loved the war on terror symbolism idea but i think it could have been done much better, the most i got out of it was the whole invading the zones "owned" by the zombies to steal the much needed resources ala america invading nations to steal their oil. i was really looking forward to this because i love the cast but their talents were not utilised that much and the film seemed over before it began. it's a shame because i expected it to be great, which i don't think it was, which is ironic because i expected the remake of dawn of the dead to suck yet it was fantastic.

perhaps i was a little letdown because i had watched Sin City the previous night and that blew me away, i even have the comic which i grabbed over ten years ago as a kid and the film is so faithful to it, apart from nancy's strip routine and one other scene which was used to bookend the film.

stupid Jessica Alba who plays nancy, didn't wish to get naked for the scene "cause my dad can't see me naked". it pissed me off, not because i've got a thing for her (which i don't) but because it was important and crucial to the story for her to do so, where as the only other bits of nudity in the film are unnecessary. it surprised me that Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez agreed she could stay clothed (must be really nice guys or short on cash) even though she'd already signed on knowing she'd be playing a stripper, and they wanted it to be as faithful to the comic as possible. shortly before the film came out she did a fhm style photo shoot in which her breasts are partially exposed, damn hypocrite.

Mickey Rourke is fucking awesome, i can see another career being resurrected ala John Travolta. let's hope he doesn't blow it like Travolta did.
 
Tim Butons - The Corpse Bride

I should make it absolutely clear from the start that I have 'romantic' issues with large chunks of goth culture.

I really liked this movie.
There is singing, dead people walking, twisted romance, and great art/animation all aimed at god knows what audience ... possibly just me :\
Maybe creativity didnt get mugged, dragged into a dirty alleyway and stabbed to death by predictable formula afterall ?

Halfway through watching a film called Crash which is thus far really good. Unfortunately the DVD it is on was not worth the 5c worth of plastic it probably took to construct it and insists on locking up just when the movie is winding up to its crescendo.

Anyways it's a great movie about multiple forms and examples of racism in L.A. I'm guessing towards the end of the film all of the characters will have learnt some valuable lessons. It was aiming that way.
 
I watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang recently too and loved it. It has just the right amount of dark comedy and enough of a plot to make you pay attention to the movie. I love Robert Downey Jnr too - a total crack up. Good for getting out on DVD.

The most recent movie I saw though was King Kong. I thought it would be absolute shit after seeing the preview with DINOSOURS of all things in it. But then my bf insisted we see it cos we were bored and I was pleasantly surprised. Its stupendously long but it has some awesome action scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. And the cinematography is different and impressive (IMHO)......It does take quite a long time to get the ball rolling and I swear its an hour before they even get ON the island.
As for characters and all the like - I think the plot is stretched a bit to fit all these wizz bang special effects in and I don't feel an awful lot for the big hairy ape.....Though I find it very hard to connect with most characters in any movie so that's probably something lacking on my part, not the movies.
I wouldn't hire this out again when it comes out on DVD cos once you've seen it there really isn't anything else you need to "get" from it. So for that reason and the fact it is OVER THREE HOURS LONG 8o I'll give it:

Unleashed
It was good to see Jet Lis character evolve throughout this movie.
I loved some of the camera work. Good camera work makes a good fight scene, and what's a Jet Li movie without some crazy goong foo.
I loved how it wasn't set in America as well. Gave it a lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels feel.
8/10.
 
^^^Same here but 5/10, stale characters and acting, predictable storyline.

Kung-Fu Hustle Ah, wonderful movie. Think kung-fu on crack. Turns Cliche on its head into a rather amusing movie which provided many a chuckle. Some very pretty fight scenes, although the ending was a bit of those "We're going to beat you over the head with emotional meaning and just in case you don't get it, we'll throw in some visual prompts."

Footloose!
Much more fun than I remember; I couldn't stop bouncing in my seat, even though Kevin Bacon is seriously cringe-worthy in his dance scenes, and the end of the movie is typical 80's American prom crap. It still has it's moments. And it was fun laughing at what passed for "masculine" back then - when you get angry and frustrated and want to punch someone, what's a boy to do? Rip off his jacket to reveal a sleeveless white t-shirt and high-waited acid wash jeans and dance, of course!

And what's the perfect gift to tentatively give your new boyfriend to show him that you're thawing towards him and he might actually get some puntang? A music box! Why didn't I think of that 13 years ago?? :D

Flashdance
Unfortunately, this little 'gem' has held up rather shabbily over the years. Even Jennifer Beal with her puppy-dog eyes and unbelievably toned butt can't distract from what this movie really is - an 80's workout video masquerading as a film. I tried to feel all camp and kitch while watching this but unlike Footloose it just didn't do it for me.

Next up... "Pretty in Pink". Stay tuned..........
